Margaret,

Thanks for the reply. I'm glad I was able to reach you after seven years.

It sure does sound like your Franklin is part of the Rosencrantz/Rosecrans/Rosengrantz (too many spellings to list) family with the Little Falls and Ogdensburgh connections. I don't have any information linking Franklin to that family, but I'm posting an article about Catherine Herkimer Rosencrantz Pope that might give you some information you don't have. Let me know if you have any comments. I'd like to help you on your search.

Portrait and biographical record of Christian County, Illinois : containing biographical sketches of prominent and representative citizens, together with biographies of all the Governors of the state, and of the Presidents of the United States. Chicago, Ill. : Lake City Pub. Co., 1893. Transcribed and annotated by Judy Rosella Edwards, 2007.
MRS. CATHERINE H. POPE, who resides on a fine farm on section 6, Pana Township, was born near Utica, in Herkimer County, N. Y., May 7, 1814. Her father, Henry Rosencrantz, was born and reared in the same county, and was a son of Rev. Abram Rosencrantz, a native of Paltz [ed., perhaps Pfalz], Germany.

When a young man he crossed the briny deep to New York, where he met and married Miss Anna Maria, daughter of Gen. Herkimer. He then took up his residence in the township of Little Falls, and was the first preacher of Herkimer County, the old German church being built expressly for him.

He was a prominent and influential citizen and a most highly-respected man. His death occurred at the age of seventy years. His eldest son became a United States Congressman. The second son, Henry, was a prominent farmer of Herkimer County. Nicholas, the next younger, was a soldier in the War of 1812. Abram followed farming in the same county. Joseph, who was a soldier of the War of 1812, was also a leading agriculturist. The daughters of the family were Margaret, Katie and Polly.

Henry Rosencrantz, the father of Mrs. Pope, was a farmer by occupation, and in his native county married Patience Easterbrook. She was born in Rhode Island, and was a daughter of Abel Easterbrook, also a native of Rhode Island. His people were sea-faring men, but he followed farming and blacksmithing.

Mr. and Mrs. Rosencrantz began their domestic life in Herkimer County, N. Y., and there remained until 1826, when they removed to St. Lawrence County, locating on a farm, where the father died at the age of fifty-eight. The mother died in this county in 1857, while visiting her daughter, Mrs. Pope. She was then in her seventy-ninth year.

Their family numbered seven sons and four daughters, of whom seven grow to mature years: Anna Maria, who married Luther Davis, both of whom died in Sangamon County; Mrs. Elizabeth Talman; Mrs. Henrietta Sturtevant, deceased; Mrs. Catherine H. Pope; George, deceased; Margaret and Patience, also deceased; and Abram Rosencrantz, who died at the age of fifteen. The other children died in infancy.

Mrs. Pope spent her early girlhood days in her native county, and then went with her parents to St. Lawrence County. The common schools afforded her educational privileges.

On the 14th of January, 1833, was celebrated her marriage with Abel Smith Pope, who was born in St. Lawrence County January 7, 1810, and was the fourth son of Timothy and Hannah (Stickney) Pope. His father was a prominent citizen and large landowner, and was a cloth-dresser, miller and tanner.

Mr. and Mrs. Pope began housekeeping in St. Lawrence County, N. Y., and he engaged in cloth making, tanning, etc., in company with his father. After the death of his father he removed to Spencerville, Canada, six miles west of Prescott, where he engaged in hotel-keeping for two years. He then went to Prescott, where he ran a bus line for two years, after which he returned to St. Lawrence County, N. Y., and followed the same business in Ogdensburg, coming thence to Christian County, Ill., in 1853.

They were numbered among the early settlers, and went through all the experiences of life on the frontier. In 1868 they removed to the farm on which Mrs. Pope now resides, and he carried on its cultivation until his death, which occurred in 1882.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pana, and was a Republican in politics. He possessed many excellencies of character, was upright and honorable in all things, and had the confidence of the entire community. Many friends mourned his loss.

Unto Mr. and Mrs. Pope were born the following children: Henry H., who was born in New York, enlisted in Company D, Thirty-third Illinois Infantry, served throughout the war, and for meritorious conduct was promoted to the rank of Colonel; Henrietta M., the next younger; Melissa M. and George, who are both deceased; James, a traveling salesman for a Kalamazoo firm; Albert, who carries on the home farm; and Sarah E., who died in infancy.

The family have a very pleasant home, situated in the midst of a fine farm, comprising three hundred and twenty acres of valuable land, which yields to them a good income. The household is the abode of hospitality, and its members are widely and favorably known in the neighborhood. Mrs. Pope is a member of the Baptist Church, and is a most estimable lady.

Barbara McDonald

Hi Barbara,

My husband's Mother was Alice Rosecrans from Oberlin, Ohio. Her Father was William Rosecrans, born in Ogdensburg, NY, and whose Father was Franklin Rosecrans married to Frances Hines in Ogdensburg, NY. Franklin stated that he was born in Little Falls, Herkimer County, NY on January 16, 1816. Since both Henry and Joseph Rosecrans were sons of Abraham and were born in Little Falls, Herkimer County, I am 99% convinced that Franklin is related to that branch of the family. I had thought originally that Franklin might be the sons of Henry, but that has been disproved. Henry and Joseph both had sons the same age, but I have never been able to locate any more information about Joseph's son, only his daughter Anna Maria.

However I have searched for more than 20 years and not found the answer to the puzzle. If you can shed any light on this mystery, I would be most gratefu. Franklin was very careful to not mention the names of his family prior to his marriage. Elizabeth Rosecrans, daughter of Abraham, was the attendant at the weddidng of Franklin and Frances, which also strengthens my belief that he was related to that family.

I would really appreciate hearing from you. Thanks again for the contact.

Margaret Bonifield

Lillie G Rosecrans did die young. "On Monday, Oct 2nd, 1899, at the residence of Mr. Joel Wilder, No. 122 Forset Street of consumption, Miss Lillie G Rosecrans, aged 17 years and 5 months. Miss Rosecrans was the daughter of Charles Rosecrans of this villiage, and was much beloved by her friends who mourn her untimely death. The funeral services were held this afternoon at 2 o'clock p m., conducted by Prof. E. I. Bosworth and was attended by a large number of friends. The interment were in the cemetery at Kipton." It was really Forest Street, it was a typo. The cemetery is a small one called, Camden Cemetery. She is buried with her mom, 'Maretta Rosecrans 1863-1990'. My Grandmother was a Rosecrans from Oberlin. Computer crashed and lost my computer files, working from my papers until I reenter them into the computer. My grandma was born 1922 and her dad in 1882. They were cousins. I was born and raised in Oberlin until a few years back.

If it is true I would LOVE any information you would have on John and his family. Thank you. kittycub@hotmail.com

Do you have information on Hezekiah Rosekrans's children? My wife's g-g-g-granfather was William Rosecrans who was born May 12, 1819 in Rahdolph County, Virginia, now West Virginia. I have no information on his parents. I know that WIlliam married Matilda Olden on October 16, 1851 in Muskingum County, Ohio. William eventually settled in Stark County, Illinois when he died on March 20, 1900. According to census information, William's father was born in Holland.
William's son, Thompson Rosecrans, was my wife's g-g-grandfather. Thompson was born February 1, 1856 in Ohio and died December 4, 1932 in Odell, Nebraska. Any help is appreciated.

The only information I have which is what we have from my GG Grandfather is that she "came from England" but I am not sure as I cannot find any records. I just became aware of a web site at www.finchroots.com that stated Eunice lived with her daughter until her death and she is buried in a private cemetery on the lakeshore property of her daughter and son-in-law.
Hi,

I have 2 books about the Rosenkrans family,
"The Rosenkrans Family in Europe and America" by Allen Rosenkrans published in 1900, and
"Glimpses Through Portals of the Past, Descendants of Herman Hendrickzen Rosenkrans and his Wife" by Warren Rosecrans Helden, published in 1921. (I haven't really looked at this book thoroughly but I think it's just the family line from Herman to Warren.)

Both of the books are available through through Higginson Books, their website is www.higginsonbooks.com. Click on the geneology menu button and it'll bring you to the alpha section to find the books you want. They print to order so you can choose from paperback and hardcover.

The books haven't really helped me yet, but I use the book by Allen alot to see if I can help other researchers with their questions, there is tons of information and some cool stories and pics, they're in b&w so some are a little grainy but cool none the less. Each person listed in the book is numbered with 1 being Herman, then his wife, kids and so on.

Thanks for the heads up about the Wis Rosencrantz links, I'll have to check that out!

Good Luck!
KellyO

Can you tell me what the name of the book is and where I may buy a copy?

I just got started with Geneology a few months ago. I have heard that I was related to the Rosencrans family of Denmark.

It appears that my family includes people from Wisconsin so I may find a link someday to yours. I was recently in the Wisconsin area north of Milwaukee, Fond Du Lac. I was told by the desk clerk at the hotel that the Rosencrantz family owns a large apple orchard near by. Unfortunately, I didn't have any time to visit. You may be able to find something by contacting them.

I saw your message on the Rosecrans board and would like to know what information you may have if any on a Eunice (Unis) Rosecrans who married Isaac Finch in Goshen, NJ. Eunice is suppose to have been born in 1760. They had children who migrated to Delware County Ohio with the Deckers, Van Sickles and others from the same part of NJ.

Thanks

Jeanette

Hezekiah Rosekrans and Nancy Simpson

Hezekiah Rosekrans (various spellings) appeared in Randolph county, (then) VA before 1795, apparently with his first wife, Margaret Westfael. The name Westfall is common in early Randolph records and elsewhere in WV and may suggest the reason for this relocation of Hezekiah. They are said to have had three children. Apparently Margaret died soon after their arrival and Hezekiah married a Nancy Simpson in Randolph (or nearby) in about 1795. Hezekiah and Nancy appear to have had nine children, at least several of which remained and established families in Randolph county.

There was an early John Simpson that is reported as having lived with the Pringles for a time in the marshes (or glades) along the border between (now) Preston county, WV and Maryland. These men are said to have migrated southward but had a disagreement and John Simpson apparently left the Pringle brothers and traveled westward, probably in the Pleasant Creek Valley to discover Simpson Creek which bears John's name. The Simpson family appears never to have been large and I've yet found little about them. My great great grandmother was a Simpson reported to have been born in Tucker county, but perhaps in adjacent Preston county. The Pringles went farther south and apparently followed the Buckhannon River to live for a time in a large hollow Sycamore tree near present Buckhannon, WV, becoming perhaps the first permanent settlers in Upshur county, WV.

I am seeking to find the parents and relatives of Nancy (Simpson) Rosecrans as all of her descendants are likely among my collateral cousins.

The ancestry of Hezekiah I have found only in the LDS records and would appreciate any other information linking him to the New York Rosekrans family.

The surname Rosekrans is said to have been Norse. Can anyone give me a derivation of this surname? The name itself appears strongly Germanic, but that may have occurred after the family had moved southward from Norway.

Rosecrans Rice

Looking for any information/descendents of William Rice & Catherine Rosecrans. Both probably born ca. 1750/60. Catherine was supposed to have been born in New Jersey "on the Delaware River". They both turn up in what was then Ontario County, NY, now Livingston County, NY. near Avon, NY in the 1790 census & land transactions. William d. 1809. They supposedly had 8 kids to include William, Jr., Charles, Oliver Phelps, & 2 unnamed daughters & others.

Specifically, what I want to know is information about either of the William Rices, more the younger. And who is Catherine Rosecrans & her ancestors? I have a book I found that outlines well Charles & Polly Rice's & Oliver Phelps Rice's family, but has nothing at all on his brother William's. Can anyone help me? Thanks!
