I am looking for the family of Jean Rosie (circa 1762) who married Oman Duncan. I know she had two brothers Malcolm and John, as Malcolm aged 68 and John's widow were both living with Oman and Jean in the 1821 census. Any info much appreciated. Regards Linda

I have a Thomas Rosie marrying Margaret Bruce I think at South Ronaldsay, Orkney. Their daughter was Thomasaenia or Thomasenia or Thomasena Rosie born 23rd September 1872 Orkney. Would you have any further information about these people?

I am not sure if you meant me to receive this information and whether it was meant to be rude but it seemed quite offhand. My ggg aunt married an Italian prisoner of war - he was not Orcadian - nor did he become an orcadian if that answers your question if it was one.

Also I can't see how a Scottish/Orcadian could possibly become suddenly an Italian prisoner of war.

I have a George Dunnet b 1771, son of Andrew Dunnet and Anne Andrews who married Esther Rosie b 1776, daughter of John Rosie and Elspet Sandison. George and Esther had four children, Elizabeth b 1800 d 24Feb1888, Anne b 1804, Donald b 1808 and John b 1811. All were christened in Thurso. Elizabeth married James Ryrie. They had four children James, Donald, George and John. That's the end of my data.

My maternal grandfather is from Dunnet, near Thurso and we have marriage ties to the Dunnet family.

I know it was a couple of years since you posted your message so I still hope you are on the boards.

Anyway I was interested in information on rosie/dunnett if you are able to help me. This is the information I have.

Esther Rosie dob 22 march 1776 halkirk, caithness, scotland. married George Dunnet I have no dob for him. These are my 5 x great grandparents.

The children they had were.

Elizabeth Dunnet - my 4 x great grandmother
Ann Dunnet
Donald Dunnet
John Dunnet.

Had a look at the map of Caithness; Canisbay is in the right location for the family story - close to Mey.

Not a lot definite; I have deduced out a few things - she must have been born before 1806 as she married in 1822 (would make her 16 when married) and the children were born between 1824 and 1832 so she was likely to be born after 1788 (that would make her 44 when the last child was born) so birth between 1788 and 1808 which is a fairly big range of years. Family story has her being a bit younger than Alexander (he was born 1777); also has her being a servant at one of the houses in Thurso area. Not too sure where Canisbay is but your marriage date is in the right sort of area...

May be interested; my ancestor is MARY ROSIE and she was married to ALEXANDER SINCLAIR around 1822. They were from Caithness but moved to Orkney around this time. Any connection?

Hi - I'm also looking for a Rosie who moved from Caithness to Orkney around 1820 - small world isn't it! My Rosie is MARY, who was married around 1822 to ALEXANDER SINCLAIR from around Thurso. Does any of this match up? Pretty sure that they moved to Evie parish which isn't too far removed from Burray...

family tree - no clan - earliest knowledge John Rosie/Rosy born circa 1744 married Janet WILLIAMSON CIRCA 1769 (can't find marriage record) but they lived in Canisbay, Caithness and had 8 children (records found) My line moved to Wick,
Papigo Bridge and were involved in the herring industry.
Then my g.g.grandfather emigrated to South Australia. I wish
to find out more about the original John Rosie and Janet
Williamson please. Did the name Rosie come from the Isle of Rousay in the Orkneys? Any information most gratefully received. I live in Melbourne Australia.

My Rosie family are Walter Rosie and his wife Margaret Warse. They married in Canisbay in 1788. I don't know who Walter's parents were, and as far as I know they did not have a child called Mary, but you never know.

Do you know anything else about your Mary Rosie?

I have Helen ROSIE from S.Ronaldsay, who lived and died in the Selligar area. She died in 1843 aged 77 and was married to James MOWAT. They had 5 children I am aware of, all boys:
John chr. 11 May 1800 (m. Barbara MUNRO 1825)
James chr. 11 June 1803 (m. Margaret DUNCAN circa 1830)
George chr. 2 Oct 1805
William chr. 31 Jan 1808
Gilbert chr. 19 Nov 1810
Looking for names of her parents, siblings and dob or any further info about her sons, especially John.

Since this post I have discovered this ROSIE is not actually in my tree...I have looked to see what info I retained but can't find it at the moment.

BUT I think you might have some luck on this site www.southronaldsay.net which has the 1821 Census for the area and features DUNNET, ROSIE and SCOTT surnames.

Marriage on IGI is Jun 21 1822 in Thurso
a couple of Mary's born in Canisbay that may be candidates

one in 1781 daughter of Hugh Rosie and Catherine Unknown

one in 1784 daughter of David Rosie and Elspet Kennedy

there is also a Marriage for a Mary and Robert Mowat 2 years later in Canisbay

I will ask my Aunt who may have these details as I don't all I know is that her grandmother (the one from Orkney was called Janet White Park Scott and she married William Kellock and lived in the highlands and eventually in Kilsyth. I have just started a search but I know that my great grandmother was born in St. Margaret's Hope in South Ronaldsay. Her name was Helen Scott and she came from the Dunnett family who had a farm there. One of the Dunnett sisters married an Italian prisoner of war and his name was Rosie and that is all I know at this stage. My cousin is named after her great grandmother Helen. could there be a connection. If you have any info at all I would be most grateful.

Hi I am currently starting an investigation into my family and I know very little except that my great grandmother was born in St. Margaret's Hope in south Ronaldsay. There were sisters all Dunnetts and they had a farm there. One of the daughters married an Italian prisoner of war by the name of Rosie. It is in the book of records and that is all I know. My gr.gr. grandmother was Marjory Rosie who married Alexander Steven. Her Father was John Rosie born 1781.(Not the son of John Rosie and Janet Williamson). There were 2 John Rosie s born that year. I did make the mistake of thinking they were the parents a couple of years ago when I could only find one on the IGI. Ian Aitchison set me straight. My John is not listed in IGI.

JOHN RITCHIE born Scotland 1752 (place unknown) married JEMIME QUICK ca: 1776 (New Jersey,USA?). Migrated to Kentucky, USA- Nelson County. Died 1822 in Nelson County, KY.
Their daughter BELL RITCHIE married WILLIAM ICE. William & Bell's daughter MAUD ELIZABETH MARTIN (ICE) married JOHN CLEVELAND MARTIN in Paragould, AR, USA in 1906. They are my great-grandparents.

tho there is a Marjory born in Bower in 1810 to John Rosie and Catherine Bruce

The only John Rosie born in 1781 on the IGI was born in Canisbay to John Rosie and Janet Williamson.

Try to contact Ian Aitchison who has done numerous Rosie family trees.
They are all in the library of the Caithness Family History Society.

Annie Lizzie Dunnet the daughter of John Dunnet and Annie Rosie is my 1st cousin twice removed.

The connection is through her mother Annie Rosie born 1869 in Wick to John Rosie and Barbara Gunn.
