Are you saying your files connect the Roskamp family with the Leemhuis family in Weener in the Weener area? That is where most of my relatives are from. Do you show any Penning surnames in your files? Thanks- MarieLynn

MarieLynn, I am sorry I did not see your post until just now. I have looked through my records and don't see anything matching the people you inquired about. There is one tie between the Roskamps and Leemhuis families but that was in the Weener area. I know there were lots of Roskamps in the Netherlands. Most are not connected to mine, however. You might check and see if the LDS church has films for Holtgaste and trace them that way. Also there is a great site for the Netherlands at Genlias.nl that has many civil records. Good Luck with your search. Carrie

Thank you for writing. Yes I am very interested in the article you mentioned. I know little about Hilberdina Gersema Roskamp after she came to the US. Can you send it as an attachment or a transcription to carrotarms@verizon.net? Sincerely, Carrie

Hi Carrie,

I am an Eekhoff researcher, and, as you may know, that line includes some of the Roskamp family. I just now ran across an old newspaper article I had filed years ago under "Who is This??" and wonder if you'd be interested. It is in reference to your Dina Gersema Roskamp of Freeport area.

Jan Olsen

I am researching my Ostfriesland ancestors and found you have Roskamp information. I wonder if I could bother you to ask if you know of Elbertje Everdina Roskamp born August 18, 1841 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. She married Inko Jodokus Leemhuis on February 13, 1867. Other names in my lineage are Bruno Wiard Penning, Evertja Jaajens Leemhuis (born March 03, 1812 in Holtegast, Germany) These are my GGGrandparents. Thank-You for any help you can give.
Hi Carrie,

We were in contact with Hauko by phone today. He did not know about the Ruskauff name in the Osnabrueck area (where my ancestors came from). But he found lots of variations of spellings of his Roskamp names, as we are finding different spellings for Ruskauff. We'll probably never know if they are all connected. Hauko's article about the Roskamp Family in Ostfriesland is not finished yet, and we hope to see it when it's finished.

Debbie

Dear Debbie,

Thanks for writing. After looking at your website I don't believe that we are related. I have done extensive research on my Roskamp line and there doesn't appear to be any familiarities on names or locations with your family. Too bad, as I love to hear from distant cousins! If you would like to take a look at my website on Rootsweb, here is the link:

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=carriet

If you would like to get in touch with Hauko it might be better to respond to his post directly.
I'm also interested in the Roskamp family and would like to see the article written by Hauko Roskamp.

We just came back from a trip to Osnabrueck area and to Weener to find records of ancestors and look for names in the cemeteries.

My ancestors spelled their last name as "Ruskauff" but I've seen variations in many records. My website has some of this info: http://earlydues.usanethosting.com/ruskauff/index.htm

We may give Hauko a call tomorrow.
I am researching the Roskamp family also. I read in an earlier letter that some Roskamps's came in the late 1800's. A John Roskamp settled in South Dakota and Iowa. He had two sons that came over with him named Henry and John. Henry was living in South Dakota but haven't found John. I am writing to let you know that my Great, Great Grandfather was named John Roskamp. He lived in Illinois. He had two sons and a daughter. One son was name John and the other Henry. The daughters name was Clara. The original John was born in Germany but I have no clue where and desparately would like to know. I am wondering if he could have come from Weenermoor Germany as Carrie Tyalor stated in earlier posting. Carrie could you e-mail me at cfhiller@bigfoot.com

Roskamp's in Illinois

Carrie:

Thanks for contacting me again while investigating the Roskamp,s again. I haven't been successful since I last communicated with you. Maybe you will find a lead for me--wouldn't that be great!!

My Roskamps came to America sometime in the late 1850's or early 1860's. I really don't know if they came directly to Central Illinois or if they were in another state before coming to Illinois. I do have a copy of John Roskamp's Citizenship Papers. Based on census records I have found for the 1870's, it appears that John Roskamp was born in 1836. He became a citizen of the United States on November 4, 1862 in Peoria, Illinois. The citizenship papers states that he is from Germany and the area of Prussia. I know that Prussia changed its geographical boundaries from time to time so I really don't know for sure the specific area. I do not have a city from which he is from which makes this very difficult. Me married Mary Sophia Stange in Peoria, Illinois on February 24,1861 and she was from Germany--Prussia too. They had 5 children (2 died in infancy). The living children were: John Jr., Henry, and Clara. According to an obituary record on Mary Sophia, she came to America in 1860 (which I'm assuming to Peoria, Illinois in 1860) and later moved to Banner, Illinois April 5, 1863.
Hi Kathie, I have emailed Fiona in U K and given her some info and our address in West Sussex U K and awaiting more details of my half brother Andrew and wife Margaret's daughter - in- law Aunty Joyce who was married to Kenneth. We thought he was in the Royal Navy as we have a photo of him in his whites but have been told he was an engineer. He had something to do with HMS Kelly at one stage. We have found out that it was torpedoed by a German E boat and was towed back to England from Norway and was repaired and back in service but was later sunk in the the Med off Crete with a loss of half her crew. She was under the command Of Lord Louis Mountbatten
Thank you for putting Fiona in touch with us it came as a lovely surprise
Very best wishes
Anne and Ray
Anne

I have come across your Roskamp descendents in the US and also found the famous Roskamp in sports that you mentioned! Unfortunately, I didn't find any connections yet. I did search my database and didn't find any relations. Do you have the names of this John Roskamp's children? Perhaps we can get a clue from their names and birth order? I know there were a lot of Roskamps in Holland also. I corresponded with another lady who was a Roskamp a few years ago. She was from England. Can't remember her name now. Carrie

Hi Carrie, unfortunatley I have little info regarding my great great grandfather John Roscamp1764/1840.By word of mouth passed down I have been informed that he held high office in the German army.He travelled through the Netherlands and crossed over to England arriving via the river Tyne at Gateshead. My father had said estates had been left behind in Germany but they had been taken over by the state. As in my previous email one of my anscestors left for the U.S. and became a minister in the church in Lawrence County, sorry I have no more info other than my line in England. We have several clergy in the family and a famous footballer who played in the F. A. cup in1928 scoring the winning goal. ANNE

Dear Anne,

Do you know where this John Roskamp originated that came to England in the 1700's? I have done a lot of research in Germany and would love to know how he fits in-if he does. Was he married before he came to England? My Roskamp family was mostly from the Ostfriesen area of Germany. Thanks, Carrie

John,
I just recently found the birth record of Koert Roskamp Eissen (sometimes spelled Aissen or Aeissen) in Weenermoor, Germany. He was born August 11, 1858 to Harm Berends Aissen and Hilberdina Roskamp, hence the middle name of Roskamp. Harm died around 1860 and Hilberdina remarried to a Jan Dirks Roskamp. Those two reasons could be why Koert had the last name of Roskamp by the time he came to the US. This Hilberdina is the sister of the John Roscamp that I have been searching for. Hilberdina was born in St. Georgiwold, Germany-not too far from Weenermoor. I am hoping to search the church records for that area soon.

Dear Karen,
GEDCOM is a format used to allow one genealogy program to read information from another. The format allows families to stay linked properly not just appear as individuals. It is a standard format so just about any genealogical computer program will accept them. If you don't have a genealogy program there are several places to get free downloads on the internet. Familysearch.org has a good one. If you have windows 98 you can receive lots of different files.

I am so excited. I finally made a connection and found my gggrandfather in Weenermoor(Weener) Germany. His name is Johannes Hermanus Roskamp, born December 8, 1839 in Tergaster Hammrich, Germany. Parents are Egge Janssen Roskamp and Hilberdina Gurzema. He married Wubbina Eissen(or Aissen), born Klugkist, on 28 Feb 1867 in Weenermoor. I have many notes on the other Roskamps I found so far in that area. Send me an email with the Roskamps you are looking for and I will check the notes I have so far. There really are not that many there compared with other families so they shouldn't be hard to find. Thanks for listening, Carrie Taylor

To add my two cents and another question to the matter, my grandfather, John Roskamp was born either in South Dakota or Illinois. His father was John Kourt Roskamp, married to a Petertke Eekhoff. They moved to Iowa when my grandfather was a young boy. P. Eekhoff was born in Hanover, John Kourt, somewhere in Friesland in 1848. We understand that John Kourt's father died shortly after his birth. His father's last name was either Eissen or Eisen, and his mother remarried a Roskamp and gave John Kourt the surname. I would like to know more about John Kourt's blood ancestory. If anybody has anything.
