Hi Betty,

Great to hear that we have a connection!!

Katy is possibly (likely) a daughter of Joseph and Margaret born in Wisconsin about 1863. I have her in the 1870 (Hamilton Co.) and 1880 (Harrison Co.) censuses with her family. I don't have any other information about her.

My information on Joseph's (and brother Michael's) lines are quite sketchy from the time they moved from Wisconsin. I'd love to fill it in and fill you in on the lines still associated with Wisconsin.

A descendent of youngest brother Anton has been arranging a get-together for his line for the past few years, so I'm sure he'd be interested in the Iowa/Minnesota lines as well.

I'll package up some info and send it off to you off-line.

Regards,
Bob Miller

My gg-grandfather was Michael Rosskopf from Washington County WI. According to my information he was married to Margareta Appel (Oppel). His daughter Rosa married John Schmitt who was my g-grandfather. I haven't been able to trace either of them to Germany as of yet. Your info may provide some clues. Thanks. Have you picked up any more info about Michael?

This is indeed familiar, although I have none of the information outside of Washington Co WI except for a reference to Mohren/Wolferstadt. John Schmitt (Rosa) purchased his farm from Michael (after 1859). I have info on their branch of the family.

I'd appreciate info about the "conglomeration" that you mention. That area of Germany seems to have little info in the LDS library. I get no hits for these villages and other larger places in the area.

Joe's sister Rosa was my g-grandmother (married to John SCHMITT).
I am researching the Batzler name. Do you have any more information about Margaret? I am searching for more information on Jacob Batzler from Bavaria(?) who came to Milwaukee area (Granville) b. May 5, 1835. Father's name was George. I think that George's wife was either Elizabeth or Katherine. Does any of this sound familiar?

Also, I know that there are several Roskopf's in this area. I personally have not researched that name but maybe you would find info if you searched this area (Wisconsin, Milwaukee and Waukesha counties)

In my family tree there is a John Batzler b. 1870 that married Anna Roskopf b. December 1872. They had two sons. Anthony and Alvin.

Hope this helps you.

I may have posted one of the messages you refer to having read. I haven't been doing any family research for the past couple of years since we moved but did recently read your posting. My wife was a ROSSKOPF and would be tied in with the line you are researching through Franz Xavier ROSSKOPF born 1777. My wife is descended through his first wife Maria MERKLE. I'm assuming your line goes through his second wife Maria KNOLLIN who had a child Franz Xavier ROSSKOPF who married Magdelena then later married Veranica SINGER. I may be a little confused with all the Xaviers and Marias floating around. Let me know if I can help you out. Maybe you could help me sort out some of that family's details also.

I haven't been involved much in family research since we moved a couple of years ago. I recently read your message and might be the Joe you referred to in the message. My wife was a Rosskopf and her Gr-Gr Grandfather was Anton with wife Elizabeth Heuschmit. My wife's Gr Grandfather was Joseph F. Rosskopf who would have been Clara's brother. I have Clara married to a Chris Mau. My wife's grandfather (Irvin Rosskopf) did a good job on family research in the 1960s/70s which you may have seen posted on the Web. I'd be glad to let you know anything that I have.

He is burried in Hartington, Nebraska.

I have photographs of great grandfather Joseph and wife Margaret, of whom you write.

Would be interested in swapping information off-line sometime.

Contact john_roskopf@aon.com

One source of Rosskopf history is already listed on the Internet at the Neuenchwander Homepage.(I hope I spelled that right). This is the same line that I have been talking about with minor changes. Another person I have been corresponding with is Bill Rosskopf who has been working on the Rosskopf line also. He can be reached at BRossk26@aol.com . I started with the same source of information that Bill Rosskopf had, that being a history compiled by Irvin Rosskopf who was my wife's grandfather. It had the Rosskopf history traced back to Germany into the late 1600s. This info should be on the Homepage I mentioned. It was only the Michael Rosskopf connection that was confusing. Michael Rosskopf came over with Walburga Rosskopf and her family in 1852. They all came to Washington Co, WI near Xavier Rosskopf's farm. It sounds like Michael stayed when the other Rosskopf's moved to MN. Walburga stayed in WI and died there in 1882. If you have any trouble finding this info let me know.
-Joe-
To the best of my information ( which is a conglomeration of other researchers work) Michael Rosskopf was born 1808 in Bavaria, Germany and died after 1880. His daughter Rosa was born in August 1839 and died March 1877. If these are the same family members you are looking for then Michael is the son of Michael Rosskopf born August 3, 1777. Michael (born 1777) is the twin brother of Franz-Xavier Rosskopf who is in my wife's linneage. They were both born to Josef Anton Rosskopf who was born in March 1753. Let me know if any of this sounds familiar. The Rosskopfs who came to the US in 1852 moved near Xavier Rosskopf's farm in Washington County, WI for a while. Some of the Rosskopfs then moved on to Martin County, MN.

Roskopf Surname

Ref. the Roskopf/Roskup surnames. My Grandparent were Roskopf from Minsk USSR he was Joseph Roskopf 28 yrs. of age and she was Paulina Josephovna Winter Roskopf 22yrs of age when their passport was declaired in January 1913 and Febrary 27,1914 crossing the border from USSR to Germany. They paid each a fee of 10 rubles for travelling across the border and for the use of the red cross - 5 rubles.
I have not yet been able to find exactly which ship they each came on, but I am sure they did not come into Ellis Island, but came by way of Canada into the United States. Sometime, unknown exactly when they had their names changed to ROSKUP,Possibly was changed in Canada my uncle Joe the oldest child was born later married to an unknown woman from Canada and served in the Canadian Army for awhile My Uncle Andrew, the youngest of the ROSKUP brothers was born in Frost Minn. died in France during that war.So if anyone can help fill in some of the peices of this puzzle let me know. I have copies of my Grandparent ROSKOPF Passports from The Kamyshiisky district when they migrated from USSR to Germany those two years...
Thank You

As I mentioned in my other message it was Irvin W. Rosskopf who compiled much of this family's history. It was his information I have been using to search and I haven't found any big errors yet. I just found an undocumented birthplace for Anton Rosskopf born 13 June 1834 in Weilheim, Bavaria. You can find these Rosskopfs in the Germans to America, Vol 3, page 379-380. They arrived on New York on the ship Augustus on their way to Milwaukee. There was a relative there named Xavier(Xaver) Rosskopf who owned a farm. According to the book's information they Rosskopfs boarded the ship at Bremen and came from Obermoellrich. There were two seperate families. One headed by Walburga and one by Michael Rosskopf from the same place going to the same place in the U.S. Irvin Rosskopf's family history does not talk about a Michael Rosskopf (at this point in time)however. I'm assuming you have contacted the Neuenchwander Home Page. They have the complete Rosskopf linneage on the Internet for this family as compiled by Irvin Rosskopf.

Irvin Rosskopf (my wife's grandfather) put together an extensive family history. I do not have his original documentation although I do have copies of some of his correspondence. I found a census sheet giving Anton's birthplace as Bavaria. This was the MN 1885 Martin County census page 3. In the 1880 MN Martin County, Fraser Township census, page 195 it lists Anton and his parents as having been born in Bavaria. Irvin Rosskopf had access to papers of Anton Rosskopf according to Irvin's correspondence. Anton wrote family marriages and births etc. after he retired in Fairmont, MN in 1897. I wish I had these original papers. In those original papers Anton has Bavaria as the location the family lived in Germany. That's all I have to-date. My documentation on my wife's family is somewhat limited since I have not gone in depth to write it up yet.

I think they came from Germany and had a daughter, Sarah Matilda b. 1857 in Hamilton Co., OH and a son, Charles Jacob b. 1875 in North Vernon, IN. I'm sure there were many other children inbetween. I have some information on descendants of Sarah and Charles.

Roskopf ancestors in Germany?

My great-grandfather was Joseph Roskopf, born 7/15/1836 in Germany. He emigrated (date unknown) to Milwaukee, WI, where he worked as a butcher. He married Margaret Batzler, born 6/28/1844 in New York. Joseph and Margaret had several children, among them my grandmother, Mary Catherine Roskopf. An older brother was Jake, an older sister was Ann, married to a Collins. The Roskopf's farmed near Creston Iowa. Joseph died in 1906 and Margaret died in 1913. Both are buried in Dunlap, Iowa.
Does this family sound familiar? I am very interested in knowing more about the Roskopfs, whether in Germany or the U.S.
Carol Edmisten, grand-daughter of Mary Catherine Roskopf Harris.
