Hi! My name is Sue Rotan Sherrill. My uncle was Henry Stafford Rotan, born to English and Thetus Price Rotan in the late 1890's. He was my father's oldest living sibling. I have always been so interested in finding out more about the origin of the Rotans, what country they came to America from, etc. My email address is suesherrill@yahoo.com. Please respond to me, if possible. I know that a number of my father's cousins, uncles, aunts, were from South Carolina. My father was Robert English Rotan.

I have to apologize that it has taken "years" for me to answer but having babies will do that! The only story I have concerning The D.A. Rotan of Phila. is when I was pregnant and was going through the monthly check ups, the old Dr. in the practice asked me if I was related to the Rotan family that had the D.A. in Philadelphia. He told me that they had alot of money and that they were very affluent in Phila.

Geroge Rotan Sr. was married to Viola Wunder in 1906 (+/-). They had George Jr. in 1907, Fred in 1909 and Clinton in 1914 (+/-). Fred married Katherine Richardson and they had 3 children: Fred G. born 1928, Ronald E. born 1933 and Joyce born in 1934. They moved to Cherry Hill, NJ where they raised all three kids. Fred, who was called Fritz has three children: Ron, Shirley and Jackie. Ron has 5 children: Ron Jr., Laura-anne, Kurt, Teresa and Tracey. Joyce never had any children is married to Martin Ellis. Ronald is my father. Uncle Fritz died in March 1994 and my father passed in Novemer of 2006. On the 1910 Census George Sr. and Viola are listed as living on Delaware Avenue along with George Sr's mother (Julia Dougherty) and on the 1920 Census they are listed as living on Memphis Street. It's nice to find someone who has connections to the "Philadelphia" Rotan's. Do you have any information on Viola and her parents or siblings? I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Teresa Costantino

Hi Joanne,
My Aunt Louisa ROTAN was b. 2/22/1897 Balto, MD, the dau/of Geo. Albert ROTAN b. 4/27/1869 Balto., MD.

I have a Geo. O. ROTAN but do not know the spouse or the children with these notes:
1879-Balto census: "Rotan Geo. O, finisher, 196 w Lanvale"
1895-Balto Directory: "Rotan Geo O, huchster, 137 Millington av"
1896-Balto Directory: "Rotan Geo O, huckster, 137 Millington av"
1898-Balto Directory: "Rotan Geo O, prod, 117 Dolphin"
1900-Balto Directory: "Rotan Geo O, grocer, 117 Dolphin"

1900 Baltimore, MD census, Vo. 16, E.D. 163, Sheet 6, Line 51. a George Rotan is listed a born in MD Jan, 1855, living at 117 Dolphin, Baltimore, MD. This enumeration was done by John G. Ray, whose relationship to George Rotan was boarder.
(This may be the son of William Rotan the shoemaker & the father of David Rotan.)
With such an unusual name one would think that this family would be easy to trace. There are also ROTES & RHOTENS in Balto., MD at the same time.
Joan

Shirley,

In your message, you mentioned John Rotan and Zemila ASKEW. Do you know Zemila's parents? I found a record of their marriage and am trying to place Zemila to see if she belongs in the line I am researching.....Henry Askew, b ca 1780-1788 md Mary (Polly) Noble, 1808, in Ga, moved to MS and to Tx when it was a republic. I found John and Zemila in 1850, Tyler Co, TX where she reported her age as 22 and b in MS. This would be in line with Henry, who is found in 1830 in Yazoo Co, MS.
My husband's ancestor was Polly Noble Askew's sister, Elizabeth who married James Bullock. Henry was administrator of James's will and is living next door to Elizabeth in 1830. The Bullocks also went to Tx by 1844.

Any information on Zemila Askew Rotan's ancestry would be greatly appreciated and if there is a connection, if I can of any help with the Noble line, please let me know.

Thanks,
Loretta

Over a year ago, the bible was been returned to us, due to Mary's investigative skills, and kind heart. Thank you more than we can say. It belonged to John Morris ROTAN, (1900-1968Tx) ( son of William Thomas ROTAN and Anne Lou MORRIS). He was the grandson of John Willis ROTAN and Zemila ASKEW. His daughter took the bible to church as a child and lost it. It was missing for over 50 years. She is happy to know that it is back in our possession. The entries have answered alot of questions, and given us new ones. We never would have been able to know about part of my grandfather's life with out it. We are indebted to Mary for this. Thank you Mary for caring about this, and working so hard to return it to us. Shirley

I am descended from Margaret (Rotan) and Dan Griffith of White Co., TN. Margaret was a daughter of William Rotan and probably a sister to your Mary Ann. The family moved from the Spartanburg, SC area sometime in the 1790s to Kentucky...and then on to White Co., TN. Dan and Margaret were married in Christian Co. about 1816 and the following year moved to the Lost Creek area in White Co., living next door to Margaret's father William.

I don't have a lot on the family, but willing to share. Communicate via email at Robert.D.Griffith@worldnet.att.net
Re: surname Rotan - Bible

Mary,
Our Rotan line traces from VA to SC to KY to TN and spreads from there. Please see if any of these names fit your bible records:

John Rottan, b 1735 VA and served in the Rev. War in SC.
sons William Rotan, b. abt 1760 SC and John Rotan
John & William are found in Barron Co, KY in 1800. William spends some time also in Christian Co., KY where his daughter Margaret marries Dan Griffith. The families move to White Co., TN between 1810 and 1817.

John moved to Ohio for a few years and then to Greene Co., IL. His children include Thomas, Littleton and Hiram. Thomas moved to Colin Co., TX about 1842.

William Rotan was in White Co., TN by 1811 with his son Richard M. Rotan. Other family members include Jane and Harry. Jane married Dr. Wm. E. Throckmorton. Another possible son of William is Tarlton Rotton of Christian Co., KY.

James Edward Rotan, born in Sparta, TN in 1844 was a grandson of William Rotan. James was a successful businessman in Texas after serving in the Civil War for the Confederacy.

My ancestor, Dan Griffith, served as executor of William Rotan's will. Would appreciate any additional information you might have if it pertains to this family. Please respond to robert.d.griffith@worldnet.att.net
My great-grandfather had a brother, Henry Hough (pronounced Huff), who married a Becky Rotan and they lived in Phila. From census information, Becky would have been born abt. 1862-1863 and married Henry about 1882-1883. They had 4 children: Anna, b. July 1884; Amanda W., b. Nov. 1887; Henry G., b. Mar. 1894; and Jane (poss. called Jenny), b. Mar. 1896. Anna died before 1910, and I believe from what my grandfather said she was murdered. He also said some Rotans were buried at the Palmer St. Cemetery in Kensington. Henry G. and Amanda were buried at Oakland Cem. I do not know where Becky Rotan Hough and her husband Henry were buried. Have you found her in your family?

Glad to meet you cuz, It is an ongoing thing. I have more films coming, esp. Indian records. I'm working on the prospect that Jonathan was the son of an Edmond Bridges who had 3 sons and 1 dau, 1790 SC. Jonathan's kids are all known except one early son, who I think was named Edmond, by census, born about 1803. I believe he died before 1820 and Jonathan named another son Edmond in 1829. I'm also trying to prove his wife Nancy at least half NA. Any effort you can provide will be appreciated. I have a genetic twendge that Edmond 1st was born in Maine in 1739. Please talk me direct at jerrrco@aol.com. This site isn't what it was. Jerry Cox

Doesn't seem an obvious match, does it? That George (born about 1838 in Maryland) also had a son George born about 1859. But in our family tree we have 2 girls, both born in Maryland who married Fieldings on Vancouver Island. Sarah Elizabeth was born about 1854 and Louise Mary Ann was born march 27, 1870 in Baltimore (died Oct. 28, 1918in Chase River, near Nanaimo, BC Canada). The surname is sometimes Wroten, Wrotten or Wroughton. The father was George and the mother was Elizabeth Allen. It seems that these 2 girls must be sisters, and the information for Sarah seems to match Sarah Rotan in that 1881 census. I was hoping someone might be tracing this family and could fill in the blanks. It may be that 2 sisters married 2 brothers.
Joanne

Rotans from Kershaw County, South Carolina

I am looking for any decendants of Henry Rotan, born approximately 1846. in South Carolina. I currently live in Maryland and am the great granddaughter of Mattie Rotan. My grandfather's siblings didn't talk about their father much, but they did say that his name was Henry. I located in the 1880 Census a Henry Rotan, who had a son named Henry about the same age as my great grandmother, Mattie. If anyone is a decendant of Henry Rotan, please contact me. Thanks.
