My Ratchfords came from Mayo to Liverpool in 1841. Then to New York City around 1905. I'm learning that our name comes from a French soldier trapped in Mayo in the Irish rebellion of 1798. He (they?) was hidden by the locals and changed his name to Ratchford (the Anglicised version) to hide from the British. Eighter he or his son went to Liverpool around 1840. My Ratchfords stayed in Liverpool for another two generations before coming to New York City around 1905.
