It's been some time since I researched my Rounds lineage. I do have Philo Leroy Rounds b. 1853 m. Gertrude Hatch b. 1855( d. of Samantha Church 1827 and Orson Hatch).

I am interested in any information or connection you have to these.
Re: Parker French information

Hello Dan:

Thanks for the reply. I have Miles, McGowan, and Baldridge. My Baldridge is annotated by Johnson (Los Angeles: 1958). Is that the same material as "A Little Bit More?" Thanks for the tip on Cardinell, but I still want to take a look at his 1922 California Historical Quarterly article.

I am looking forward to reading your book, and may still be working on this project when it is published as I don't know how far my research will take me.

I am very intrigued, of course, by the information you have. I got started on this because I inherited a letter mentioning French that establishes the date of his departure from Mexico, which contradicts previous accounts.

Am I safe in assuming that French took the bullet to his arm in the raid at Corralitos where David Cooper was shot in the hip?

I understand your reluctance to share Cooper's text, of course, but I certainly would like to know more about his encounter with French at Mazatlan. I gather that this was in late 1850. Johnson says that French was able to ingratiate himself with the "majority" and arranged for the passage of "all but a few" for San Francisco. Anything you feel you can share would be most welcome.

Should our correspondence continue, and I would welcome that, perhaps email would be a better means?

Michael Blakeslee
mgblakes@hotmail.com

Re: Parker French information

Hi,

I have located what probably amounts to all of the available material on French in researching my own book. You mentioned the Baldridge account. There are a few others that you will want to access, and they can be gotten through interlibrary loan. They are all worth the time if you want to be thorough.

The first is the William Miles journal, titled: Journal of the Sufferings and Hardships of Capt. Parker H. French's Overland Expedition to California.

Next you should get The Strange, Eventful History of Parker H. French, by Edward McGowan.

Then there is a small article, A Little Bit More on Parker H. French, by Kenneth M. Johnson.

One additional publication that I would not recommend to you, would be the Charles Cardinell book, Adventures on the Plains. Cardinell was on the same wagon train, but his account offers very little that you cannot find elsewhere, at least on the subject of Parker French.

Of course, there is also my book, which is the life story of David Cooper. But it will not be published until some time in late 2010 at the earliest. If your research can wait that long, I would recommend doing so, as I will add some significant data on the wagon train that French foisted off on the unlucky travelers. But as for French, himself, I have no factual additions aside from David's personal eyewitness account of the cataclysmic gunfight at Corralitos, in Mexico, and an account of his relationship with French a bit later in Mazatlan. Both these aspects are significant in some respects, and I would recommend awaiting my book if that is at all possible for your research purposes. But if your time frame is a bit more hurried, I can answer some specific questions for you about the material. I can't give you the actual text, unfortunately, since it is a part of what makes my book so special.

My request for any additional written material that Spafford Rounds may have contributed, has not yet been answered by his descendant Lorena (see prior post), but there may be something there that could help you further, as well.

Dan

Rounds, Lillian Beckman,

Lillian Beckman Rounds
Lillian Beckman Rounds, age 88, of Millcreek Twp. peacefully passed into the presence of the Lord on December 24, 2008 at her home. She was born in Brookville, Pa. on July 22, 1920, the youngest daughter of the late Frank and Edna Ellenberger Beckman. She had resided in Erie most of her life, except for ten years when she and her husband, Jim, managed a general merchandise store and service station in Wellsville, N.Y. She and her sisters formed the Beckman Sisters Trio and sang together for years at churches and special events, including the dedication of the KDKA radio station in Pittsburgh. She was a longtime member of First Alliance Church where she sang in the choir for many years. Her love for music continued as she listened daily to her collection of Gaither music. She was the head cashier for twelve years at the J. B. Dahlkemper Co. on Peach Street until her retirement in 1982. After that, she was a busy volunteer at her church, where as a member of the hospitality team, she helped prepare countless meals for special events. She is survived by one daughter, Cheryl Flint (Chuck) of Millcreek Twp., two grandsons, Jamie (Becky) Flint and Chris (Janae) Flint all of Erie. She was blessed with a great-grandson, Corbin Flint. She is also survived by a precious family of nieces, nephews, and in-laws who have shown so much love and kindness over the years. She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-four years, James H. Rounds, and her sisters, Laveda Lingenfelter and Caroline Sadowski. A memorial service will be held at First Alliance Church on Sunday, January 4, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. Arrangements are being handled by the Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 4216 Sterrettania Rd.

This is my line; John, George, William I., William Elmer, Marvin Edwin Rounds. I can't find documentation on who John's parents were. I have info that John was born about 1799 in either New York or Rhode Island...don't know which one is correct. John settled in Iowa and died in Monona County, Iowa about 1877. Does anyone have information on John? I have hit a brick wall on this and cannot go any further back at this point.

Thank you! Can you tell me where you found the information linking John to Abiel and Mary? I'm just wondering what I missed and where I failed to look in my searches. I'm still learning as far as finding data prior to the 1850 Censuses.

Thanks again!
Lynn

Our Rounds Family was from Drumbo Ontario . Cicero Davenport Rounds was my Great Grandfather. They moved to Detroit MI in the late 1800's. My Grandfather was the Great Indian Territory Missionary J. B. Rounds in Oklahoma Territory. I am trying to find the family roots. Are you related to him by chance? Dana L. Rounds Post
ps. I see there is a Eliza Berry in our line born Nov 5, 1824 and died Aug 8, 1905 . Is that the one you are looking for?

Rounds from NY in Ohio

This may be a repeat of previous info, but rather
than check, I'll just repost.

from
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohwcl/PioneerHistoryofClarksfield/p...

Pioneer History of Clarksfield, Huron Co., Ohio
pages 111 - 120

In Cattaraugus county, N.Y., there lived a
family by the name of Rounds. One of them, Isaac, came
to Hartland township. One of his sons, Nelson,
died in Clarksfield in 1900. A daughter, Harriet,
married Aaron L. Pixley and died in Clarksfield
in 1843. Jacob Rounds, a brother of Isaac, came to
Clarksfield in 1838 and lived near Whitefox, but
returned to New York. A daughter of his married
her cousin, Nelson Rounds, and lives in New York,
since the death of Mr. Rounds. Another Rounds
family, cousins of Isaac and Jacob, also lived in
New York, of whom five sons and one daughter
came to Clarksfield about the same time, 1836-37.
Isaiah married a sister of Mrs. John Converse
and they lived on the Butler road north of
Whitefox until 1840. He died in Wisconsin. Darius
married a sister of Seymour Waldron and died in
Michigan. William W. married Esther Higgins, a
daughter of Jonathan Higgins, and they lived just
east of Hamlin’s corners, then moved to Wakeman
township, then to Wisconsin, where they died.
Their daughter married William Converse and is
living in the west. Cyril lived here until 1845.
He once lived in Dr. McMillan’s log house south
of Hamlin’s corners, then on the Butler road near
John McDonald’s. His children were Orton, Mary,
Margaret and Elizabeth. He died in Wisconsin.
Lane Rounds lived here until 1840, but died in New
York. Esther Rounds was the wife of Freeborn
Letson. Two younger brothers, Washington and Nelson,
lived in this vicinity, but probably not in this
township.

Freeborn Letson and his family came from New York
with the Rounds family. He once lived south of
Hamlin’s corners but later bought a small farm on
the Butler road across the way from John
McDonald’s, which is now a part of the Fish farm.
His children were William, Cornelia, Andrew,
Philander and Perry. Philander died about 1849.
The family moved away some time after 1851.
William Letson, a brother of Freeborn, married
the widow of Jonathan Higgins and died on the farm
next west of Ezra Gray’s.

Barb Schrauben, ggg granddaughter of Freeborn and Esther
Ann Arbor, MI

Round American prisoners of the Revolution

The following names appeared on the list of American Prisoners of the Revolution that was posted on RootsWeb this past week:

List Of 8000 Men Who Were Prisoners On Board The Old Jersey

List compiled by 'The Society Of Old Brooklynites' in 1888.*

"This list of names was copied from the papers of the British War Department. There is nothing to indicate what became of any of these prisoners, whether they died, escaped, or were exchanged. The list seems to have been carelessly kept, and is full of obvious mistakes in spelling the names. Yet it shall be given just as it is, except that the names are arranged differently, for easier reference. This list of prisoners is the only one that could be found in the British War Department. What became of the lists of prisoners on the many other prison ships, and prisons, used by the English in America, we do not know."

Hampton Round
John Round
Nathan Round
Samuel Round

I'm pretty sure the "Hampton Round" is John Hampton Round/Rownd from Snow Hill, Worcester County, Maryland. John Round and Samuel Round might be his brothers John Whittington Rownd and Samuel Hopkins Rownd. The latter definitely served in the Revolutionary War, but I thought it was in a land militia, not naval. There is pretty of documentation indicating that some of the Maryland Round/Rownd/Rounds family were seafarers, though.

I don't know if any of these men came from the New England line of Round/Rounds.

I will be cross-posting this message. I hope no one minds.

Burford, Brant, Ontario ROUNDS

GGGrandmother Eunice Eliza Rounds married Thomas Berry on 3/9/1849 in Burford, Brant, Ontario, where she was also born on 11/26/1827. There are ROUNDS pioneers of Burford who helped establish the town, but which family she is from is unknown. All of her eight children were born in Michigan in/around Saginaw County. Thomas and Eunice are both found in Summit, Clay County, Iowa on the 1880 Federal Census. Any information on her would be appreciated.

I do believe that Cicero and Eunice Eliza are related, but the connection at this time is unproven.
