ROUNTREE DNA UPDATE MATCHES US LINES

ROUNTREE-ROUNDTREE-ROWANTREE-ROWNTREE-ROUNTRY SURNAME

As of yesterday August 12, 2009 five participants whose ancestor came to America are a match. We now know that dispite the many Rountree stories and how these five ancestors arrived in America, we all share a common ancestor.

These lines are:
Assigned Lines:
Charles Roundtree b c1680 England or Ireland m Lydia McMann (67 marker test)
+ Thomas Roundtree b 1733 Co Armagh Ire Orange Co. NC, m. Eva Sturgis
+ Andrew Roundtree b 1772 Orange Co NC m Mary "Polly" Robinson
+ John Jackson Roundtree b 1815 Maury Co TN m Margaret J. McKee
+John Marion Roundtree b 1850-1851 m. Melvina Witherspoon
+Paul Hollis Rountree b. 1878 Maury County m. Sarah Adeline Spivey

John Rountree b c1798 Co Armagh Ireland m Mary Anne (67 marker test)
+ Charles Rountree b 1822 Co. Armagh Ire m Frances Jones
+ William John Rountree b c1858 Co. Armagh Ire m Mary Connolly
+Frederick Rountree b 1883 in Co. Armagh Ire m Margaret Mallon

NOTE: The two males above match 66 markers.

James Vandiver Jones b 1803 SC or VA (67 marker test)
William J. Jones b 1826 Greenville County SC
William J. "Johnny" Jones b 1854 Anderson County, SC

NOTE: James V Jones matches the line of Charles Rountree b c1680 65 of 67 markers.
James V Jones matches the line of John Rountree b 1798 64 of 67 markers.
James Vandiver Jones is a Roundtree by any spelling. If anyone has information
that would help his descendants please contact me and I will get you in touch
with each other. It is believed that this mismatch in markers occured about 1800
but can't be certain.

Turner Roundtree b c1790 Spartenburg SC m Clara "Clarey" Smith (37 markers)
+ John S Rowntree b c1830 Spartenburg SC m Emily Francis Lanford
+ James Turner Rowntree b 1856 SC m Mattie Rowena Bearden
+ Carl Bearden Rowntree b1884 TN m Harriett Vivian Fowler

NOTE: This ancestor matches the lines of Charles Rountree b. 1680 and John Rountree b. 1798 on all 37 markers.

We have another line who has tested with 37/37 markers matching. I do not have access to the ancestral line at this time but hope to have it soon. It is said that this is a line of Richardson Roundtree.

************************************************************************
FACTS IMPORTANT TO KNOW:
There is a sixth participant whose line is of Yorkshire England who is not a match...not even a close one. He matches 30 markers of 37 markers. If tested on 67 markers he would undoubtbly still be unmatched with the rest.

Of course this was very disappointing to a number of Rountree's who have believed that they they were from this line.

Perhaps with further testing on new members we can find other matches for John Rowntree b. 1680 in Yorkshire England.

That line is as follows:
Unassigned Group:
John Rowntree b c1680 Yorkshire, England d 1741 Yorkshire, England m Ann Marton -
+ Robert Rowntree b 1722 Yorkshire, England d c1789 m Mary Halliday
+ Robert Rowntree b 1754 Yorkshire, England m Ann Wood
+ William Rowntree b 1792 Yorkshire, England m Elizabeth Bowman
+ John Rowntree b 1824 Yorkshire, England m Sarah Horn
+ William G. Rowntree b 1850 London, England m Anne J. Kirkby

We beg you to participate in this surname DNA study. A participant should be male, have a proven line to their earliest known ancestor.

To order your kit go to: http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/rountree/order

You may also contact me at ginrounATcomcast.net

Happy researching!

Ginny Rountree

I have just begun searching for my husband's family. We have found notes and little pieces at a time. Today we found a handwritten note in an old book-Roundtree in Texas was relatives. Margaret Murphy was J Tault Murphy's sister. If she had been married before to an Ingram as on the 1880 census from lauderdale, Alabama, then we just may have a link. We do not have much on our family. Let me know, willing to share
Mary Murphy in TX but of OK-Tenn-Ala

First of all, this is Becky...not Amy. I'm using a friend's computer.

Secondly, please accept my apology for taking so long to reply. I didn't see the notice until this morning.

To answer your question, I have little/no information about about Martin Roundtree. My UDC (United Daughters of the Confederacy) chapter placed a military marker at his gravesite last fall. I was trying to find any descendants that I could...just to let them know about our ceremony. I have pictures from the ceremony, if your MIL is interested. Also some paperwork (his pension application, I believe...testing my memory here!) I can scan in for her.

My email is historyluvr@hotmail.com

Becky

Rowntree/Rountree DNA

There is a Rountree/Rowntree etc. project site on Family Tree DNA. So far, there are 4 participants.

I am one of the participants and my father and his ancestors lived in Co. Armagh, Ireland. Prior to that is pure guesswork, but it is rumoured that the family came from Yorkshire, England.

Another participant is descended from Thomas Rountree and Evy Sturgis, who immigrated, in 1760, to, eventually, Orange County, North Carolina. Thomas, who was born in 1733, came from the same place in Co. Armagh as my family, so I am certain that we are related, but, I know for certain, at least, 8 generations apart.

A third participant is descended from Turner Roundtree, of South Carolina. Turner was born about 1796, and it is possible that he is a grandson of Richardson Rountree, but there is no evidence other than his name Turner.

I think that it usually assumed, in the States, that Richardson Rountree was a descendent of immigrants who came directly from England. But did they?

Why the query? Well, all the three participants above have identical y-DNA across 37 markers. According to FTDNA, there is a 99% chance that all three of us have a common ancestor around 10 generations ago. Now, the Rountree family was in Co. Armagh in 1660, which would be about 11 or 12 generations ago. Does this indicate that Richardson Rountree's ancestors came from Co. Armagh?

What was wanted was a Rountree/Rowntree who is directly descended from a Yorkshire family. Well, we now have one whose forefather was
John Rowntree, born around 1680.

This Rowntree's DNA results for the first 25 markers were promising, there being two mismatches. This could lead to the possibility of 90% that we had a common ancestor around 800 years ago. This is around the time that surnames were starting to be widely used in England. However, on the next 12 markers there were a further 6 mismatches, which really precludes any relationship in the last 2000 years, if the line from father to father is 'legitimate'.

What is needed is more Rountree men to be tested, especially those descended from the Richardson Rountree line, and from the Georgia family, whose ancestry, I believe, is unknown, in spite of their 'trees'. But at least 37 markers need to be tested, and preferably 67. As can be seen from above only 25 markers are almost certainly a waste of time.
Genuine family tree?

I know that this might come over as boring to some members of the Rountree/Roundtree/Rowntree family, especially regular readers of the message boards, but can I, once again, make a New Year plea, please? I know there is no very much hope, as I have not received an answer over the past few years, but I don't want to give up and I am always hopeful that a new reader of the message boards might come up with the truth.

I, and I would think lots of other members of our family, would very much like to find the original source(s) of the family tree of the Rowntree/Rountree/Roundtree family from Moses Rowntree (b.1550) through William, Joseph and John, to Frances (sic) Rountree (apparently born 1649), if such source(s) exist.

The earliest date that I have been able to find of when this tree first 'surfaced' was in 1963, in a book 'The family of Ebenezer Durden Rountree' by W.E.Rountree, without any references, and similar information was sent to the Church of Latter Day Saints, for their records, by Frances La Merle Cochrane in the 1970s.

La Merle Cochrane’s notes said that the information was gathered by I.W.Rountree (d. 1979), of Swainsboro, Georgia, during a visit to the British Isles. A nephew of I.W. told me that I.W. never visited the British Isles, and the nephew did not know of any references for the tree. W.E.Rountree, who was I.W.Rountree’s son and also lives in Swainsboro, never acknowledged my letters.

If any one of the Rountree/Roundtree/Rowntree family, or any one else, does know where the data originated, e.g. in a family bible or church records, will they please let me, and other members of the family, know. I know that a number of American family members have this as part of the tree in their genealogy and I am sure that they would like to believe that it was based on solid records, rather than some possible guess work by person(s) unknown, or even the false work of a rogue genealogist. Surely, at least one person who has included it in their tree must have records to show the origin. I must say that I find it inconceivable that they continue to keep it as part of their family history without any proof at all. The first five generations from Moses to Frances (sic) are said to be in England, where no evidence exists and no one in England appears to use it. The sixth generation, Charles, who did exist, appears in Armagh, Ireland, and is my family. Again, there is no evidence or tradition of Moses to Frances in Ireland. I will never include it in my tree unless the sources can be shown to be valid.

Thank you.

Fred Rowntree
My husband has been involved in the Rountree (any spelling) DNA study. His first 25 markers are returned with 13 remaining markers to be tested. He is with the Family Tree DNA project. There are only two to three members in the project.

The project also has ties to the Huxford study (Wiregrass GA area)and Clan Fraser in Scotland.

Information is available at this link:
http://worldfamilies.net/surnames/r/rountree/index.html

He is a perfect match to John S Rowntree b. 1830 of Spartanburg SC and his descendant. My husband is of proven line of Thomas Roundtree and Eva Sturgis Orange County NC.

This line now has solid proof to a SC connection. Any information on John S Rowntree would be greatly appreciated. If you know of or are connected to him please contact us at ginrounatcomcastdotnet.
I am just beginning the process of reasearching my family tree. My families surname is Roundtree and they are from Anderson, SC. My grandfather's name was Robert but everyone called him Polly. My grandmother, his wife, was named Lois. They moved from Anderson or Iva, SC to Bridgeport, Ct. in the 1930's. They are the African American Roundtrees. I would like to hear from anyone who may have known them or know of their familiy connections in SC. I had the pleasure of knowing my grandparents and was very close to them. I would like to hear from anyone who knows of this Roundtree connection. Thank you!

David,

Thank you for replying. Yes, I am aware that the Rowntree/Rountree family came from Yorkshire; that was the 'tradition' in Armagh, Ireland, according to my father, who was born in Armagh. It was understood that my family came over from Yorkshire, to Armagh, around 1650.

Like you, and several other researchers, I have tried for a number of years to find the source of the tree from Moses to Frances. This is why I believe that a rogue genealogist tricked someone in the family, who had asked him to trace the family origins. It is well known that such people existed; as long as a tree was produced which satisfied the client and the genealogist got paid, that genealogist knew there was no way his work could be verified.

I will keep seeking information, but I feel it will effort wasted.

Fred

Dale,

Yes, I have read Joseph Gus's book, around five years ago. The LDS site has it on film and I ordered a permanent copy to be held in their London centre. I think it is a valuable contribution to our family history, but I do have some serious reservation about some of it.

The first five or so pages are virtual copies of a book by Charles Brightwen Rowntree, of Norfolk, England, the book being 'The Rowntrees of Risborough' first published in 1940.

As for the rest of the book, it is basically a collection of 'stories' from America, which Joseph then embellished somewhat. What is, however, missing, is the tree from Moses to Frances (sic). Now Joseph contacted many of the Rowntree/Rountree family in America, including those in Georgia, which is where, I believe, the so called tree originated. There is not one mention of it by Joseph and remember his book was published in 1959. The 1521 date in the title comes from the first date mentioned in Charles Brightwen's book, this being the earliest date that Charles had found a mention of the name. However, we now know that the earliest mention, that I, and others, have found, is in 1301, of a Robto Rountre, in Yorkshire, England. I have photographed the original document in the National Archives, in England.

Joseph does speculate about the member of the family that went to Ireland and suggests that it could be Francis Rowntree, who had land in Yorkshire in the 17th. century. I think that this was the starting point of the 'rogue' tree, as Frances (sic) appears in that as the grandfather of the NC Thomas Rountree.

Frances, of course, is a girl's name, and the above Francis had, among his children, Francis (a boy) and Frances (a girl). Unfortunately, the boy died around the age of 3. I think whoever dreamed up the tree didn't realise Frances was a girl and used the name. However the Quaker registers clearly show her as a girl.

As I said, Joseph's book was published in 1959. As far as I can ascertain the Moses to Frances tree first surfaced in the early 1960s. A coincidence?

Fred

Family Tree plea

Can I, once again, make a New Year plea, please? I know there is no very much hope, as I have not received an answer over the past couple of years, but I don't want to give up.

I, and I would think lots of other members of our family, would very much like to find the original source(s) of the family tree of the Rowntree/Rountree/Roundtree family from Moses Rowntree (b.1550) through William, Joseph and John, to Frances (sic) Rountree (b. 1649).

The earliest that I have been able to find when this tree first appears was in 1963, in a book (The family of Ebenezer Durden Rountree) by W.E.Rountree, without any references, and similar information was sent to the Mormon Church, for their records, by Frances La Merle Cochrane in the 1970s.

W.E.Rountree, who was I.W.Rountree’s son, never acknowledged my letters.

If any one of the Rountree/Rowntree/Roundtree family, or any one else, does know where the data originated, e.g. in a family bible or church records, will they please let me know. I am sure that there are many family members who have this tree in their genealogy and they would like to believe that it was based on solid records, rather than some possible guess work by person(s) unknown, or even the false work of a rogue genealogist. I will not include it in mine unless the sources can be shown to be valid.

Thank you.

Fred Rowntree

Emily Roundtree Clark

I have learned that the niece of my ancestor had the middle name Roundtree and I don’t know why.

Emily Roundtree Clark was born October 31, 1833 in Pulaski County, Kentucky and died January 22, 1901 in Christian County, Missouri. On August 27, 1851 in Montgomery County, Illinois she married Ezra Thomas Bostick.

Emily’s parents were Allison or Allenson Clark and Margaret Reid of Pulaski County, Kentucky. Allenson is probably the son of John C. and Rachel Clark and they probably lived in Warren County, Tennessee for several years.

Trying to solve the puzzle of “Who is John C. Clark.” He was born between 1780 and 1790 and died December 29, 1837 in Montgomery County, Illinois.

Karen
Illinois
