Classification: Query
Surnames: Routledge, Rutledge
Hello,
My Rutledge line started out as Routledge in England. I'm not descended from the Rutledges that came to America via Ireland. The spelling changed when William's grandson John, moved south and no doubt was surrounded by "Rutledges", so succombed to the "correct" spelling of the territory. :-]
According to many Family Trees on Ancestry, our William (son of Thomas) came over from Kirkenlin, Cumbria, England sometime before 1680, as his son John was born in Pennsylvania at that time. Interestingly, Kirkenlin doesn't seem to exist anywhere but on Ancestry... I hope we are not all pooling our ignorance--just because one Tree says it, that means it is true for mine as well...
Alas, just wondering if anyone has any light to shed about this William, this town, etc.
Thanks, Dori Lloyd :-]
