Wm. Routledge b. 1654 came to America

Hello,

My Rutledge line started out as Routledge in England. I'm not descended from the Rutledges that came to America via Ireland. The spelling changed when William's grandson John, moved south and no doubt was surrounded by "Rutledges", so succombed to the "correct" spelling of the territory. :-]

According to many Family Trees on Ancestry, our William (son of Thomas) came over from Kirkenlin, Cumbria, England sometime before 1680, as his son John was born in Pennsylvania at that time. Interestingly, Kirkenlin doesn't seem to exist anywhere but on Ancestry... I hope we are not all pooling our ignorance--just because one Tree says it, that means it is true for mine as well...

Alas, just wondering if anyone has any light to shed about this William, this town, etc.

Thanks, Dori Lloyd :-]

My grandfather, William Lynn Routledge, was also born in Carlisle, Cumbria, but in 1888, son of Mary Alice Lynn and John Routledge. He came to America (Ohio) when he was 21, telling his mother if he liked it he was going to stay. He stayed and married a Mary Jane Cottrell (nee Johns) who was born in Wales but met him in Ohio. I haven't found out much about the rest of his family members, siblings etc. but the family had a bakery on the corner of Brooke Street (I can't read the cross street on the photograph) not too far from St Mary's Church, I think. Wherever they lived you can see the Castle in the background on a picture of their street. My father took the pictures when he was there during WWII and a friend of mine visited the bakery, taking a picture of it, about 11 years ago. I think Mary Alice died and John remarried (? ) a Nellie/Nettie Barstow/Barlow or something close to that. The bakery obviously continued and they had possibly 3 sons, one being named Gordon. I have been told of another Routledge bakery at another location but not sure how, or if, this even fits into my family. I would be overjoyed if anyone recognized any of this information. If I can be of help to anyone researching Routledges I will be happy to.

John Routledge was born in 1839 in Penrith, Cumberland, England to James Routledge and Mary Slee. John was baptized at Saint Andrew Church. The family lived in Plumpton Head. I am seeking information on James and Mary (such as when and where they were born and who their parents were).

I found a James Routledge and Mary Slee married 15 Aug 1822 in Long Marton, Westmoreland, England but I can not prove that this is my James and Mary.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Katherine

My GGGGrandmother was Susannah Routledge. She married a Robert Watson and they had a daughter Anna. They may be other children, I do not know. I don't know where Webee England is, but that is always where I thought Anna was born. IGI indicates another location Quebec Esh, Lanchester, Durham, England. Anna was born in 1876. I was just wondering if any of your kin was her relation. Do you have any ties to that area or to those names?

Susan

Thank you. This may indicate they left that area when Anna was rather young, perhaps before any schooling (if there was any formal education available). I would estimate that my Susannah Routledge was born somewhere between 1852 and 1857. I believe her and Robert Watson had a son in 1873.

Dorothy
Somehow I think we have lost touch and I hope you are well. I am recovering from surgery so am behind in emails and research. I'm curious to know your maiden name, the names of your parents and how you and I fit into the same family. In a previous email you mentioned summer vacations and the Sheridans whom I am familiar with; also the Cottrells and I'm wondering what line you are descended from, including the Routledges or the Masons. I am eager to hear anything you know about my mother "Tiny" (Marie Laura Routledge Wiencek) as she passed away Nov 1995. I wish I had had the opportunity to discuss our family's ancestors, including Mary Mason Routledge (my grandmother),my great aunt Katherine Mason, and my great uncle Walter Mason. I've been trying to figure out how you are a neice to each of them, thus the question about your parents names. Also do you have siblings? Any questions you may have about any of the names I've mentioned I will be happy to answer as well.

Karen Trout

Dorothy,
Now I understand the relationships. You and I are both gr grandaughters of Mary Jane Johns: you through her marriage to Edward L Cottrell (1876) and I through her marriage to Henry T Mason (1885). Much of my research has been on the Cottrells (my grandmother apparently kept touch with her half brothers Ralph Eugene Sr and Harry C Sr, I don't know anything about a son named Edward), hoping to find links to my line. I even met a teacher (of my youngest daughter) Debra A Cottrell d/o Charles R Cotrell b.1924, s/o Harry C Cottrell Sr b.1878 who was your mother's brother. I was going to give her a photo of her father but we lost touch. I
I have photos of small children (I think a Betty, Tom, and ?Jane) pulling each other in a wagon. There was a goat also.

My grandmother had many photos of Cottrells and I think I know of more Cottrell people than my own line.
As I said I did not know that Edward and Mary Jane had a 3rd son, Edward...do you have any info or vital statistics, or descendents for him? I know nothing about Edythe Rowan either except ? marriage to Alvin. For your mother's siblings I have Harry C.Jr, Anita, Bessie, Genevieve, Tom, Betty, Charles R.

I visited Crown Hill Cemetery (my husband's father is there) and found gravesites of "My loving mother Anita Patterson 29 Aug 1906-30 Aug 1938" (I believe she was former Anita Lutz and your mother's sister); "Anne Cottrell" and "Harry Cottrell" (your grandparents?); "Theodore Hayes" and "Betty Hayes" (must be your mother's sister Betty). I have many photos, some identified and some with unidentified people...too bad we don't live close.
One more thing. I think your gr gr grandparents were Lorenzo Dow Cotrell d.15 Jun 1889 and Eliza H (last name unk)
d.3 Dec 1888 who had children Martha/Mattie, Edward L, and possibly Mary C. Snow.

I hope I haven't given you too much to read. So interesting to know what line you descended from and enjoyable to hear from you.
Karen

William ROUTLEDGE came from nr. Whitehaven, Cumberland, England, where his father(unknown) owned Muncaster Mill. The family were corn millers. Their eldest son, Thomas ROUTLEDGE was born there in 1792.

Thomas married Agnes McWHINNIE of the same area and moved to the "Old Mill", Mochram, nr Port William, Wigtownshire early 19th cent. The family owned farmland in the area as well as another mill in Port William. They had 10 children, George Ford ROUTLEDGE, 3rd eldest, was born in 1836.

George Ford ROUTLEDGE, age 24yrs, came to Australia on the ship "Suldanna", from Liverpool on the 6th July 1859, and arr. Melbourne, Australia, 3rd October 1859.

On the ship was Mary BLAIN, d/o John BLAIN of "Two Mark" Port William. George Ford ROUTLEDGE and Mary BLAIN married in Kyneton, Victoria, Australia, in 1861.

Info. wanted on parentage of William ROUTLEDGE (marr.

Having a difficult time finding information on Helen Routledge. She married Charles Nicol (occ: Oversees at harbour works, and lived in Aberdeen. I have only one child from this marriage that I was able to find; Whinton Routledge Nicol. He was born about 1806. There is a good chance that Whinton had other siblings, I've just not had luck in finding any information.
If anyone can help with more on any of these family members, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,
Lexi
