I have recently discovered some info re: a James ROUTZAHN, b. Nov 22 1822, d. Aug 24, 1859, He married Elizabeth HEBERLY (b.Aug 28, 1826) on Jan 20, 1846. They had 4 children, three of whom died in infancy. The fouth, Philip Heberly ROUTZAHN, was b. April 27, 1856.
It appears some of this activity was in Kansas. I am interested in any connection to the FOSTER family or to the KRIEBEL family.
The data was found hand written in a remains of a family Bible discovered as we were clearing out miscellany from two very long lives.
Thanks

I am a Rauenzahn located in PA, and am trying to trace back a family tree. I have no clue where to start. All I know is that I had a grandfather that passed away in 1955 named Paul and lived in West Chester. He was married to Yelda Valentino. Does anyone have a clue of where I can start to search?

Re: Elizabeth Routzahn

Well, this is an old post, but I have your Elizabeth Routsohn. She was my great great grandmother. She raised my grandfather.

Elizabeth was b 25 Nov 1834 in Berwick Twp, Adams County PA twp John and Susanna Routsohn.

She married Benjamin S. Whitmore in Maryland on June 6 1854. I recall that they had four daughters, but I can only find a record of the one, named Portia, who was b. 23 Apr 1864 and was Christened Moravian at Graceham, wherever that is. I don't believe she lived very long, but I could be mistaken.

Benjamin s. Whitmore died in a military hospital in New Orleans during the civil war. I can't remember if he died from yellow fever or was shot in the back as I can't find the pension records I used to have.

So Elizabeth had no husband to support her and her daughters. At the same time James Henry Thompson my great great grandfather, b. 1827 in Littlestown, Adams, PA, had deserted his unit temporarily because his wife, Mary Jane Arendt, had died. He came home to find someone to take care of his children,

Elizabeth was there and she became his children's caretaker and woman of the house while James went back to the war.

Now I don't remember anything about Elizabeth's children being in the household, so it could be that she farmed them out to relatives, maybe maybe not.

When Thompson came home they fell in love, and James took the entire family off to Gallitin Davis County KS. There Elizabeth got pregnant, and, not being married, James said that the baby wasn't his. She then up and left him and came to stay with her sister MArgaret in Pittsburgh.

James came back and got her and they eventually moved to Champaign County, OH, settling in Spring Hills.

The baby, Gertrude Anastasia, was b in 1870 in MD, so I haven't figured that one out yet. Could be she went back to MD to see her other children?

Anyhow, on his deathbed James brought the family all together and told them that Gertrude really was his daughter. Nice of him, huh?

Want more? email me at amyhutton @ aol.com

The name Rauenzahner has changed through the times and is spelt numerous ways. It has ended with variants as Routzohn to Routson. Hope this helps you out. I have loads of info on the Rauenzahns and Routsons and Routzohns.

AEW

Re: Appaline Routzon (?), Columbiana Co., OH

Hi, Nathaniel. I may be able to help you a little. I have a book called Rauenzahner to Routson, a Family on the Move. I believe my first female ancestor born in America was Mary Magdalena Rauenzahn. My daughter bought the book for me for Christmas. It has only opened a can of worms for me, bringing up more questions and showing lots of errors. I did find Appaline in it. Use the information for what it's worth - it may or may not be correct. On page 100 it lists Apaline Lozier Routson as marrying Joseph James Sheets in 1849. He was bptd 11/28/1829 and was a blacksmith but possessed a farm worth $4,500 in 1860. Children listed are Emma b Ohio 1850, Benjamin, b Oh 1852, d before 1870, Samuel b Oh 1854, Elmira b Oh 1856, Ada b Oh 1859, Elmer b Oh 1861, Charles b Oh 1867, Jesse G b Oh 1869. Page 101 lists William Routson of Adams Co, PA, dying 2/29/1848 aged 37. In 1843 he married Apaline Lozier, b Oh 1823/26, d after 1870 having m in 1849 husband's nephew Joseph James Sheets. .......On May 7, 1849 Isaac Easton and others did convey the 50 acres to widow Apaline Routson, and Children John, Mary A. and William Jr. ..... Hope this helps. Ginny

I have been trying to complete my faternal grandmother's ancestry. I did find her parents, brothers and sisters who were buried in Myersville and Middletown, MD. I have also found additional Routzahns that I am not able at this point to connect into the family although suspect they must be connected somehow -- they were buried in close proximity which would indicate that they had some ties. I would be glad to share my finds if interested.

My maternal grandfather was David H. Routzahn. He lived in Gardners, PA, which is not too far from Gettysburg. He married Annie Margaret Cashman and they had 4 daughters, one of which was my mother Alta May. They also had one son, Lawrence, who died as a very young child. Both David and Annie are buried in Bendersville I believe a Lutheran Church cemetery beside his parents, George W. Routzahn and Anna M. George died Nov. 2, 1928 and his wife, Anna, died October 20, 1912. David was born in 1869 and died in 1935. Annie Margaret was born August 2, 1872 and died in 1959.
Mary Magdalena Rauenzahn

I have just this minute discovered Mary Magdalena Rauenzahn (married to George Adam Bauersachs) is most likely my gggggrandmother. She apparently was the mother of Geoge A Bauersachs (married to Sarah Mohler). I am very excited as I have had the Bauersachs name and have been able to trace the men fairly well, but I have been unable to trace any of the women, ie, Sarah Mohler (Mary's daugher-in-law married to George), Mary Bell (Sarah's daughter-in-law married to Charles Bauersachs), or Elizabeth Rebecca Stevens (Mary Bell's daughter-in-law married to Francis J. Bowersox). According to Ancestry World Tree, Mary Magdalena Rauenzahn was the daughter of Johann & Elizabeth Barbara Lang Rauenzahn. Johann was the son Johannes and Anna Kumpt Rauenzahner. Elizabeth Lang was the daughter of John Georg and Eva Steck Lang. According a previous message on the board, Johannes and Ann Kumpt Rauenzahner came from Germany in 1750 and settled in the Berks County area. Is anyone researching the above people? Am I on the right track? Thanks for any help. Ginny

You will have to give me some names, preferably several generations back. The book "Rauenzahner to Routson--A Family on the Move" by Jphn P. Dern and M. Marjorie Waldner has some 1200 names with the spelling Routzahn in it. It is indexed only by surname and not be location. The following variations on the Rauenzahner surname account for 98% of the spellings in the book: Routzahn, Routson, Rauenzahn, Routsong, Roputzong, Routzon, Routzohn, Routzoin, Rautzahn, Routzong, Rauenzahner, Routsaw.

Morgantown, WV, or Maryland for Routzahn?

We are still searching for our Rouzahn / Routzhan connection... We have the book, and we still can't find our Charles Routzahn from Morganton, West Virginia in there.
1920 census, Burlington City VT (taken 7th of Jan. 1920)
George Routzahn (Head) R (age 29). born Maryland... Father born West Virginia; Mother born West Virginia.
Bessie (age 20). Wife, b. Vt. Father born VT. Mother born VT...
George Jr. (son) (age 2 and 5/12) Father born Maryland, Mother born Vt.
Edward (son) (age 4 months)... Father born Maryland, Mother born Vt.

So if our George was born in Maryland ca. 1891.... His father (Charles) born in West Virginia (between. 1850-1872) in order to be a father... according to this census record. Charles' wife was Elizabeth Lownie (according to vital records of marriage between George F. & Bessie Olive Bettis in Vt.).

Can anyone help with this family? I would love to see some cemetery records of Morgantown West Virginia to find out about the folks buried in the cemeteries there for Routzahn / Routzon / Routsong...
Thanks so much.
Linda.Welch@Dartmouth.edu
I live in an old home on Main Street in Middletown. I am trying to research it and so far have only come up with this:
"the father of J. Herman Routzahn, who owned all of the farm land east of Middletown...built his home on what was approximately the western edge of his farm. The property is a large brick house, known as No. 109 East Main Street". J. Herman Routzahn is the founder of the Grangers Mutual Insurance Company in Middletown.
I have been able to find many J. Routzahns in Middletown, but have not been able to pin point who these men are..or when the house was built. Hopefully someone may have some helpful info or a direction to point me.
I am searching for information on George F. Routzhan, son of Charles Routzhan. He was supposedly born in Morgantown, WV, ca. 1885-90, and was sent to Fort Ethan Allen in Vermont to train for World War I He was a WWI soldier. He met and fell in love with a 16 year old girl while he was in Vermont, and married her. Her name was Bessie Olive Bettis... Anyway, he went away to the front, and no one seems to know what happened to him. He was gassed, we belive. He left behind two sons, George F. Routzhan Jr., and Edward F. Routzhan. This is where the Vt. connection is... I don't think there is another Routzhan family in Vermont but from this one man. Anyone who has information, we would certainly like to know more

Almost anyone in the US that has a surname, Routson, Routzong, Routzon, Routzahn or any other variation is a descendant of Johann Rauenzahner who emigrated with his family to America around 1750-1755. They entered at Philadelphia, spread west through Berks County, PA to the Gettysburg, PA-Frederick, MD area then westward to Ohio, IN, ILL, & points further westward. A very large amount of the family is represented in an exhaustive volume entitled "Rauenzahner to Routson--A Family on the move". I know of the location of two copies in the libraries at Ft Wayne, IN and Frederick, MD although there are many more out there.

Appaline Routzon (?), Columbiana Co., OH

Hi all,

In tracing my 3G grandparents James and Appaline Sheets, I ran across a listing in the 1850 census that shows them living in Columbiana Co., OH. James and Appaline were just starting out (he as a blacksmith) and they were too young to have children of their own. Living with them, however, were John G. Routzon (age 6), Mary A. Routzon (age 4), and William A. Routzon (age 2). I don't yet know Appaline's maiden name, but this makes me wonder if it is Routzon and she had taken in some siblings or cousins. Do any of you Routzon/Routzahn/etc. researchers have an Appaline Routzon, b. abt. 1826, prob. in Ohio or PA?

Thanks in advance for your help!
