I have just begun my search for descendents of the Rowell family but so far I have found that Joshua Franklin Rowell was a brother to My ancestor William. William was born in 1788 and died in 1856, brother Joshua was born in 1809 by records got from this site. Their father was Jesse bron in 1748 in Surry Virginiaand died in 1850 in Paulding Co, which became Haralson Co. Jesse father was Edward born in 1716 or 1718?- 1759 married to Elizabeth Cooper. Edward was the son of Jeremiah H Rowell 1694-1765. Records state he came to Penn in 1701 and settled in SC, Marion Co.

Is it possible that he went by the name Oliver? I have an Oliver Rowell with no dates, son of James W. and Frances Gainey. The reason your message caught my eye is because James was born 1839 and was the son of David J. Rowell. My Oliver has 4 or 5 children but I don't have the names.

We do come back here twice a year, spring and fall for about 2 months each time.

I am working on the Rowell's at that time period, it is hard to believe that my line doesn't connect in somewhere. I will keep working on it. My line of enquiry right now is Weley William Rowell born 1830 in Livingston County, New York, who married Margaret M. Dedrick in 1848 in Naples, Ontario Co. Beautiful country!
Did you also want to know where in New York my Rowell relatives came from? My great grandfather Henry Benton was born in Lynn, MA in 1887. His father John Lindsey was born in Malone, NY in 1861. John's older brother Benton was also born in Malone, then moved to Chicago and stayed there with his family the rest of his life.

Yes, it's too bad we don't seem to have a family connection. My father's mother's family (Sloniker)comes from Wisconsin, coincidentally, but they were originally Pennsylvania Dutch. However, you can always come visit us in Switzerland! It would be fun to meet you and your family. My Swiss husband once met some distant American cousins online and they visited us here. In their case they were actually related, and it was interesting to see the family resemblance.
Have fun with your family research, and please feel free to visit us!
-Catherine Opper

Just looking at the family tree info I have so far. Sorry, it doesn't look like there's a connection. Would have been funny if there were! Henry Benton Rowell's (my great grandfather's) father was John Lindsey Rowell from Malone, NY. John's father was Hiram Rowell also born in NY. One census listed Hiram as being born in Ireland, but I think that was incorrectly written. His wife's parents were born in Ireland.

I was just rereading your posts. Maybe there is no Native American link with the Rowell family, but it's very likely they're all good at telling tall tales! I asked my mother and her siblings about this possibility, and some said it could be that Grandpa Rowell made it up. But why such an unlikely tribe?

Re: Henry Benton Rowell a Native American?

Henry Benton Rowell may have been part Native American, but definitely not on his father's side. His father was John Lindsey Rowell, born December 1861 in Malone, NY. John married Martha Ellen Seaver (born Dec. 6 1858) on February 18, 1882 in Worcester, MA. John's parents were Hiram Rowell (born 1824 in NY), and Ellen Lynn (born 1829 in NY). Ellen's parents were both born in Ireland. To help clear up our family mystery, my uncle offered to do a DNA test last fall. The results showed his male ancestors came from England or Northern Ireland. So the only possibility for our family to have Native American ancestry is through Martha Ellen Seaver, Henry Benton Rowell's mother. Since others on Ancestry.com have done extensive research on the Seaver family (see rjseaver@cox.net)and have not come up with any hint of illegitimacy, adoption, or other reasons to doubt the actual lineage of Martha's Seaver ancestors, that leaves me with Martha's mother, Lucinda C. Merriam as the only possibility. Lucinda was born September 1831 in Stafford, CT. and died April 11, 1903 in Boylston, MA. Records for her parents are a little unclear. The 1850 census lists her father as Joel Merriam (born 1794 in MA)and her mother as Lucinda Chase (born 1809). The same census lists a Lucinda C. Merriam, age 41, as living with Joel Merriam, age 56 in Holden, MA with their five sons. No mention of daughter Lucinda, although she wasn't married to John Walker Seaver until 1851. I have tried to trace these particular Chase and Merriam families with no luck so far. Anyone have any ideas? I would like to find out once and for all if there is any truth to the Native American story in my family!

Once again, thanks for all the info! You've helped so much, and my family is thrilled to have the information. I'm assuming that when you say, "No sign of Hiram," in the 1870 Census, you mean that Ellen Lynn Rowell was NOT listed as a widow, so her husband should have been there. Hmmmm...
I can see it now -- Hiram took off for the West, falling in love with an Arapaho woman, who later died in childbirth. He brings the baby home to be raised by Ellen, who promptly kicks Hiram out but keeps the baby. Their two boys have dark hair and brown eyes (like my great-grandfather) and which one is really the Arapaho is lost to history... :)
Just kiddin', of course. Thanks again for all your help!
-Catherine Opper

This is so cool. We are Rowell's that currently live in Wisconsin, but not of any family line from there. We come from Kansas where my husband's family has been for three generations, with Francis Rowell helping to open the Indian Territory. We only moved to Wisconsin in 1966.

I misspoke, or mistyped as the case may be. My husband's father was Byron, his grandfather was Ernest and his ggrandfather was Francis and his gggrandfather was Wesley William. Does this connect with your tree? I love your translation of your "Indian" ancestry. I may borrow it!

LOL, I am the wife of Roger Rowell and have been doing research on his line of rowells, his father was Byron and his Grandfather was Francis. I am laughing because Byron always said that he was part American Indian. No tribe named. I have not been able to document the possibility of such an alliance. But how, funny to have the same story in our line and I don't even know if we are really related!

EARNEST EBENEZER ROWELL

I am trying to find information on Earnest Ebenezer Rowell. The only information that I have found on him is in the SS Death Index. He was born on 4/1/1892 in Alabama. His father may be Henry and his mother is unknown. Since he was born in 1892 I thought I would find him listed on the 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 census reports. I have not been able to find him listed anywhere except for the SS Death Index. It appears that he never lived but he died. At least it was much easier to find the information on his death. I know that he lived in AR from the 1930's until the 1970's with his wife Pauline. They had about 15 children. They moved to Missouri shortly before he died. If anyone can give me some clues as to how I may find information on him I would very much appreciate it. He had a half brother about 15 years older than he named Hardy Claybrook. Hardy is listed as being born in AL but in all the census reports he and his wife Emma are living in AR. Anyone who can give assistance please contact me at goldieda1@cox.net
Thanks, Goldie

Marriage of Ed R. Bumpass to Miss Lillie Rowell

Appears in the Terrell Times-Star, Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas, 3 November 1893 ...

Mr. Ed R. Bumpass and Miss Lillie Rowell were married at the Methodist Church last Tuesday evening in the presence of a very large concourse of friends and relatives of the contracting parties. Rev. H. O. Moore pronounced the ceremony. The bride and groom were attended by Mr. R. L. Warren and Miss Ethel Cowles. Ushers: C. M. Crumbaugh, A. E. Alexander, H. Galbraith and T. E. Cowles. At the conclusion of the ceremony the marriage party repaired to the depot, from whence they took their departure on the cannon ball train for Forth Worth, from which point they will go to Austin, Velasco and other cities on an extended wedding tour.

In this happy union Cupid has made another deep inroad into the social circle of young people in this city. Mr. Bumpass, and although a young man, has already acquired an enviable reputation as a lawyer, with most brilliant prospects of greater advancement. there is not a more popular young man in the city than Ed Bumpass. His bride is the beautiful and winsome daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Rowell and is a great favorite with Terrell young people.

The Times-Star wishes them a life of ultra happiness.

John Edward and Minnie Rowell Parker

I am looking for information on the family of John Edward and Minnie Rowell Parker. Minnie was the daughter of Allen James Rowell and Mary Bagley. They had the following children according to the 1910 Ware Co, GA Census:
Ethel Parker
William James Parker
Mary Parker
Thomas Parker.

John and Minnie both died in 1915, I did find William James and Thomas Parker in the 1920 Ware Co, GA Census, living with the uncle Clifton Rowell and grandmother, Mary Rowell.

Appreciate any help..thank you.

Stephanie Grohol (Please email me at joeandsteph@frontiernet.net)
