RALEIGH - Nina Dawson Rowland, 97, formerly of Rocky Mount, died Sunday, August 20, 2006 at Sunnybrook Rehablilitation and Nursing Facility in Raleigh. She was born on December 7, 1908 in Pender County, near Burgaw. One of ten children born to Frank Dawson and Edna Deal Dawson, she lived her adult life in Rocky Mount where she worked 46 years for Carolina Telephone and Telegraph Service, now Embarq, beginning when she was 16 years old. Her husband, Jasper Clay Rowland, preceded her in death. She enjoyed and refurbishing antiques. She gave her family momentos of her handicrafts over the years. At Christmas, it was a special treat to receive one of her "Friendship Cakes." She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Hocutt and her husband, William R. Hocutt of Raleigh; her grandchildren, Reuben Hocutt and his wife, Debra of Zebulon, Amy Hocutt Traylor and Laura Fox and her husband, Craig Fox of Chapel Hill; also four great-grandchildren, Amanda Hocutt, Thomas Hocutt, Adam Fox and Derek Fox. Of her ten siblings, five survive her, Violet Poole of Raleigh, Elma Pecheles, Jessie Nye, Charlotte Lane and Dayton Dawon of the area. There is a large extended family of nephews and nieces. Graveside services will be held at Pineview Cemetery, on Wednesday, August 23, 2006 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Bruce Peacock of Christ Fellowship Church officiating.
