Reuben Rowland
Born: 1810 about, possibly KY
Died: 1839, Pope, IL (per probate December 5, 1839)
Reuben Rowland was born about 1810. He married Hannah Elizabeth or Elizabeth Lucretia Hannah Dyer, born about 1808 in Pope, Illinois, the daughter of Charles Dyer and Mary “Polly†Campbell before 1829. Their children included: Warren Green, Henry Franklin, Thomas Logan, Mary Lucretia Ann, and Reuben.
Reuben died in November or December of 1839, probably around the age of 30. His wife “relinquished her right of administration of the [Reuben’s] estate to Thomas Spann and John Crotchet.â€
The Widow’s Allowance in Reuben’s probate states: This is to certify that I Hanna Rowland have received of John Crotchet & Thomas Spann adms of the estate of Reuben Rowland deceased, my exclusive dowry and one year’s provision to my satisfaction. Given under my hand, December 5th 1839. She signed with an X (her “markâ€). In addition with the above, the said J. Crotchet & T. Spann have bestowed a lot of plank and joists for the purpose of finishing the house & not to be disposed of in any other way, also about five or six hundred bricks to repair the chimneys when needed.
His son, Reuben—one of the earliest settlers of the Wea, Iowa area: He was born in Pope County, Ill., October 8, 1838. He was brought up a farmer and was married, November 24, 1859, to Miss Amanda, daughter of Thomas Tanner. They moved to Township 16, Range 25, Wea, where he had a fine farm of eighty acres, now the property of his home and widow and children. He followed the occupation of a farmer until his death, which occurred March 24, 1879. Mr. Rowland was a man much respected as a good citizen and neighbor, devoted to his family and home. He left a widow and seven children to mourn the loss of husband and father, cut off in his prime. The family consists of four sons and three daughters, named respectively-Thomas L., Mason A., Ada V., Lewis N., William H., Rillaett and Alma R. (Miami County Biographical Sketches). An Internet thread says that this Reuben Rowland was the son of Reuben Rowland and Hannah Elizabeth Dyer, and that his father was from Caldwell County, Kentucky. A complete list of Reuben’s children include: Indiana, Thomas Logan, Andrew Mason, Lucy Jane, Ada Victoria, Louis Napoleon, William Henry, Rillietta and Alma Reuben. (Mary Lucretia Ann is in the LDS Pedigree resource file as being the daughter of this Reuben, but it’s pretty clear that the Reuben who married Amanda Tanner was born a couple of years after Mary).
