I just read your request about information about the Rowletts of Bastrop County, Texas. On the death certificate we have for my husband's grandmother - Ollie Newbury Couch - it lists her mother as Nancy Rowlett. We can't find out anything about Nancy Rowlett and everyone who might know has passed on. Have you by any chance noticed any names like Noel M. Bain, Nancy Rowlett, Thomas Benton Newbury in your search. Noel M. Bain and Thomas B. Newbury are buried in Ridgeway Cemetery in Bastrop. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Sally, I do appreciate it very much. I have had one thing after another to go wrong concerning my Rowlett book so haven't finished it yet. The latest is that the genealogy program I was using would not print in "understandable" sentences. Here is an example: He was court Grand Jury Presentments 1690-1692. And: He was Peter Rowlet, Sr. was a witness to will etc. Almost ever sentence on 585 pages I printed out was like that. I called the company that produced the program and they said I needed to upgrade my program and it would help. The computer I was using for my genealogy program was very old. I could not copy the files off of it so I could put them in a newer computer. I took it to a geek squad and even they couldn't do it. So, I am now in the process of retyping everything. I will let you know when I finish. Following is my address.

Tom Rowlett
222 S. Center Dr.
West Memphis, Ar. 72301

Thanks again

Tom

Hello Janice,

I can help you some with your Grandfather's family, but unfortunately my information on them is limited. Alfred's father was William Owen Rowlett, as you had in your first post, and William Owen's father was Benjamin Rufus Rowlett. Benjamin's father was William Rowlett.

Alfred's first wife was Martha J. Carney. They married Jan. 13, 1884 in Stewart Co., Tn. I understand that Alfred and Martha had nine or ten children but I have only eight names as follows: Bertha L., b. 1885; Jarvis L., b. 1887; Walter B., b. 1890; Bessie Ann, b. 1892; Lena Belle, b. 1897; Carrie, b. 1899; Emma Blanche, b. 1901; and Mattie Grace, b. 1904.

Martha died in 1912 and Alfred married Nellie Robertson in 1913 Stewart Co. They had eleven or twelve children. I believe Alfred had a total of twenty one children but have only eleven for Alfred and Nellie as follows: Thomas William, b. 1914; Annie Vestie, b. 1916; John Henry, b. 1918; Howard, b. 1920; Owen, b. 1921; Conley, b. 1923; Duffey, b. 1923; Alford A., b. 1925; Ada A., b. 1927; Charles, b. 1929; James Eldin, b. 1929.

Some of these names may not be spelled correctly since it was diffucult to read some of the census records. I hope this will be of some help to you. Which of Alfred's children is your parent?

Tom Rowlett

I am interested in the TITLE name of Dallas Smith's book that includes Rowlett genealogy. I am guessing that there are no copies left since there were only 6 available in 1997 but hopefully one is in a library somewhere. Any help would be appreciated. In searching the Rowlett archives there is no mention of the title. Help! Alice Benson

George Lafayette Rowlett - AR/CA

I am researching George Lafayette Rowlett and have found very little information. The information I have so far is he was born in Arkansas (09/22/1907) and died in CA (03/06/1992). His last location is shown as Lake Isabella, Kern, CA. I found an interment in the Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, CA. He enlisted in the Army in 1943 with the enlistment state being CA.

His parents are listed on the 1910 (De Queen, Sevier, AR) & 1920 (Bear Creek, Sevier, AR) census records as Lafayette F & Maggie. He also has a sister listed Birdie Rowlett (born abt 1905). Birdie is listed on the 1930 census married to Leroy Smith. The 1920 census shows a possible brother Arch (born abt 1911).

If you have more family information on this person please email me at Sdodge18@cox.net.

Re: George Rowlett Sr. of Amelia Co Va

The siblings of George Rowlett are Frances, William, John, Mary Martha, Phebe, and Betty.

The second wife of George Rowlett was Patty Mosely, not Patty Branch, as normally thought. There are connections, though, between Patty Mosely and the Branch family. This is verified through wills and other records.

His first wife is not proven but in my forthcoming book I will state reasons for who I think she was.

According to dates, the only known child that George and Patty had was George, born ca. 1782. William, John, Thomas, and Elizabeth, were all by his first wife.

I have no information on the child, Ollie, that you list. Would you let me know where information on Ollie came from?

George's son, George, married Martha O. Mann in 1814. Their only child was Pattie Rowlett. It was this Pattie Rowlett who married John Clarke in Aug. 1828. Pattie, John, and five children are listed in the 1850 Amelia Co., Va. census which shows her age as 36.

The Patty Mosely who married George Rowlett was married to George in 1779 so therefore would probably have been born about 1759/1765 and would be much to old to have been the same Pattie that was married to John Clark.

Reunion

Hello all,

Several years ago there was a lot of talk about a Rowlett reunion. I know there has been some reunions over the years in several branches of the family. As far as I know, there never has been a nationwide Rowlett reunion. My great great grandmother was Mary Self. The Self family has a nationwide reunion every year. It is held in a different location each year with different ones being in charge. Their is a Self Family site on the internet and also there is a Self Family Newsletter that comes out quarterly. This has been very successful for many years and continues to grow. My question is, would any of you be interested in having a Rowlett reunion. I don't think this is something that could be put together quickly but I think it has possibilities. I have thought of a couple of possibilities for quite some time now and just put it on a back burner because it didn't seem to generate much interest before when it was talked about. Now, tonight, my interest has been rejuvenated after talking with a Rowlett cousin who really wishes there was a reunion. I would like to hear some thoughts on this and see where it goes.

Tom

Hi LaDonna,

I just read your post. Of course I remember you. It's nice to hear from you again. I retired a year ago last June and just recently got "drafted" into going back to work. I'm not sure how long I will do this but for now it's fine. I am traveling a lot in my job and spend a lot of time in motels in various states.

The only thing is, it really is hurting my genealogy time. I spent a lot of last year just getting records in order, mainly entering all documentation into my genealogy program, and now I'm slowed down again.

I am sorry to hear that you have been sick and I hope that you are completely well are on the road to complete recovery.

I am more than happy to be of help. I believe that Eugene was born in Ar. It is confusing because of the difference in census but I reached this conclusion for a reason that I don't recall right now. It's late and I just returned home from Ms. so am not positive right now why I reached that conclusion.

Eugene's mother was Catherine Tucker and his father was William Rowlett. William was born in 1822, in Va., the son of Richard Rowlett and Margaret Baines.

If I can be of more help just let me know.

Tom
Sally, this is becoming very interesting, to say the least. I searched "Marriages of Lunenburg County, Virginia 1746-1853" and also "Marriage Bonds of Henrico County, Virginia 1782-1853" and can't find a marriage of William Rowlett and Mary Dodson.Maybe you copy and paste the record for me.

Tom

My email is trowlett@comcast.net

Hi Sally,

I will list all the different points that I believe make it conclusive that William Rowlett married his first cousin Mary Rowlett before 1780. Thomas Rowlett, who was married to ___ Gibbs, appointed his son William and William's wife Mary as executors of his will in 1780. Thus, William and this Mary were married before 1780.

Thomas' brother, William, was married to first Elizabeth Thompson and second to Sarah Archer (Neal). William names a daughter Mary Rowlett in his will in 1785.

Thomas Rowlett, the son of William Rowlett and Elizabeth Thompson, names his mother Sarah Rowlett in his will. I believe Sarah is his stepmother because of other reasons and it would not be uncommon to call her his mother if she raised him. Also in Thomas' will he names a sister Mary Rowlett and gives the names of all her children: Sarah Coleman, Thompson Rowlett, William Rowlett, Peter Rowlett, Thomas Rowlett, John Rowlett, Mary Rowlett, Archer Rowlett, and Martha Rowlett. The first child, Sarah, was born April 22, 1781. This would indicate that Sarah's mother, Mary Rowlett, was married by ca June 1780. The other children's birthdays go through 1804. This all would also indicate that Thomas' sister, Mary, was married to a Rowlett for her children's names to be Rowlett.

William Rowlett, the son of William Rowlett and Elizabeth Thompson, wrote his will in 1811. In William's will he names his sister, Mary Rowlett, and gives her his land and plantation that he lives on called Clarksfield. He also provides for his nephew, Thomas Rowlett, to receive the land and plantation called Clarksfield after his mother's death. He goes on to name all the children of his sister, Mary Rowlett, just as his brother Thomas did. Thus, William's sister, Mary Rowlett, was married to a Rowlett.

At the present time I can't locate the will of William Rowlett who was married to Mary Rowlett. I do have all the others and thought I had this one too. In his will he names his children and they are the same as are in the wills of Mary's two brothers, William and Thomas.

William Rowlett and his second wife, Rebecca Short (Edwards) had one child, Sarah Jane, who married James Dodson. Also, William's and Mary's son Thompson married Mary Dodson.

Were the records that you saw on ancestry.com family trees or some court documents. I ask this because I have reviewed many records of marriages in Chesterfield Co. and have never seen the one you mention.

Tom

PS: My fourth great grandmother was Edith Jackson Rowlett. Her mother was Ann Dupuy.

Yes, William Rowlett, born 1755, did marry his first cousin, Mary Rowlett. This is proven by wills of Mary's two brothers, William and Thomas, and her father, William, and her husband's father, Thomas. Interesting also is the fact that William and Mary named two of their children Thompson and Archer, names of Mary's father's wives. And, Mary's sister, Martha, named a son Archer. I haven't seen anything pertaining to William having a previous wife named Mary Dodson. William Rowlett and Mary Rowlett married by 1780. This is proven by the fact that their first child was born in 1781. This child, along with other children of William and Mary, were all listed as nephews and neices in the will of Mary's brother, William. Please share with me what information you have pertaining to William marrying Mary Dodson.

Needless to say I haven't been working on it due to a serious and lengthy ilness. I recently have started working on it again. I have found a little more information than I had when we last talked. Eugene M Rowlett b 1858 in MS. on the 1880 Census it list him with his mother. Her name is Catherine but it states that she is a widow and I have been unable to determine his father's name. On one census it states that Eugene was born in MS and on another it says Arkansas. So I am confused. Any help you have for me is as always greatly appreciated.

LaDonna

I lost 1/3 of my left lung and the doctors tell me that I will not be able to work anymore. So, I am on disability. I have plenty of time to research now.
Hi Chelsea,

Are you a descendant of Nathaniel Acree by his first wife or by Mary Matilda Rowlett? If Mary, which child? I have very little information on Mary's family. I do know that they were in Howell Co., Mo. and then some or all of them went to Ok. Anything at all you would share with me on this family would be greatly appreciated.

Now, on to George Rowlett. I do have some on him so maybe I can help you. I will if I can. What are you looking for about him? I'm sure you also know that he was in Howell Co. and then some of his family went to Ok.

Let me know what you need and if I can I will surely help you. My address is TRow684932@peoplepc.com and my number is 870-732-0257.

Tom

My ancestor was William Rowlett born 1755 in Chesterfield County, Virginia. He first married Mary Dodson in 1779. He married Mrs. Rebecca Short in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. William died in 1839. What I need to know, did William also marry his first cousin Mary Rowlett between his two known wives? A lot of Family Trees state that William married his first cousin Mary Rowlett.

William Rowlett married Mary Dodson Nov.18,1779 in Chesterfield County, Virginia. I found the record in 22 different places at Ancestry.com. He married Mrs. Rebecca Short May 5,1825. In her application for his Revolutionary Pension she said that William wrote in a notebook " the 7th of May 1825 William Rowlet and Rebecca Short was married." What proof do you have that Mary Rowlett maried William. Who were the parents of William and of Mary? Different Family Trees list their parents as 2 different fathers and mothers. Were Mary's parents William Rowlett and Sarah Archer? And were William's parents Thomas Rowlett and Prudence Gibbs? 7 members of my family joined the DAR with William Rowlett as our Revolutionary ancestor and Mary Dodson as his wife. Sallie Rowlett married Thomas Coleman Jan. 10,1799. This is my line. Sally Dupuy

Tom, My proof that William married Mary Dodson 19 November 1779 was from "Marriages of Lunenburg County, Virginia 1746-1853" http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=FLHG-MarrLunen...=...
And"Marriage Bonds of Henrico County,Virginia 1782-1853"
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.sll?db=FLHG-MarrHenri......"
And "http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=FLHG-MarrDeath...;..."
Also I looked for Mary Dodson on Ancestry.com and found one that was born about 1760 and died about 1790. That would explain when Mary Rowlett married William. The children were born in 1781, 1783, 1785,and 1787. If Mary Dodson died in 1790 then these were her Children. If Mary Rowlett married in about 1790 then the children born in 1791, 1793, 1797, 1800, 1804 were her children.
From the Family Tree http://trees.ancestry.com/owt/person.aspx?pid=17487569
Mary Rowlett married William about 1790. Everything that I find has 1790 as the date that they married.
My husband was John Dupuy. His parents came from Louisiana.
I just discovered that my great grandmother was Elizabeth Ligon. Her line corrects to the line of Mary Ligon.
If you want to send me your e-mail address, then we can write. Sally
