NEWSPAPER STORY CAUSE OF TRAGEDY

MORRILL, KANS., MARSHAL KILLS EDITOR AND COMMITS SUICIDE

Sabetha, Kan., Oct 7 -

Angered because a news item was printed in the Morrill
News today, Perry Royer, mashal of Morrill, a town of
several hundred persons, eight miles east of Sabetha,
shot and killed J.B. Schmucker, editor of the News,
and the committed suicide.

The shooting occurred in the main sttreet at Morrill.
As Schmucker went home Marshal Royer accosted him. The
two men quarrelled as they walked toward Shmucker's
home. After they walked a block, Royer picked up a
stone and threw it at Schmucker.Schmucker struck Royer
with a bucket. Thereupon Royer shot and killed the
editor. Royer then walked to his home and shot himself
to death.
