Hello to Gail and others. Just wanted to correct your note which stated that the genealogy tree printed in the Thomas Ruffin papers was done by the Edmund Ruffin who was a son of Thomas Ruffin. Thomas Ruffin was being contacted by his COUSIN, Edmund Ruffin (III of Virginia ... the "firebrand" secessionist) and the chart and genealogical information are his compilation. This Edmund Ruffin (1794-1865) had a SON, Edmund Ruffin IV (1816-1876) who married Judge Thomas Ruffin's daughter, Jane M. Ruffin (1829-1893). Hon. Edmund Ruffin III of Virginia and Judge Thomas Ruffin of North Carolina were actually THIRD COUSINS ... their great grandfathers being brothers to one another. Hope you get this message. If you want more information on these Ruffin lines, please contact me at indygrandma@hotmail.com THANKS

I am currently indexing THE PAPERS OF THOMAS RUFFIN (4 VOLUMES) and have come across the written genealogy of Edmund Ruffin, son to Chief Justice Thomas Ruffin. There is mentioned of Lucy Ruffin all through both volumes, but only as passing mentioning. As of today, no mention of her spouse, but then I have 2 more volumes to do. I'm doing the papers of 1856 now. If you are interested, contact me at gailshutch@aol.com.

I have one hole in that generation that I've tried to close without success. I have info on John's second wife when she applied for her widow's pension. A Dorothy Wheelhouse was about her age but her death certif stated she never married.

Thank you for any info you may have.
Barbara Wheelhouse

Hello,

Supposedly, all Ruffins from North Carolina are related based on the research I did in the past. I gave up because I ran into a dead end. I decided to start the search again. My father's name was Isaiah Ike Ruffin. He was born in Wilson, NC. He had 5 children and was married twice. He was in the Marines, stationed at Camp Lejeune and then relocated to DC for a short them and then moved to Los Angeles, which was the last place he resided before he passed. Where does your family originate from in NC?

I would wonder if the "timeline" supports this theory and if any records exist that documents this marriage. I expect there are none.

However, as I have said for years, this whole business could be put away or highlighted by comparing American Ruffin DNA with Scottish Ruthven DNA. The Y-line DNA would quickly establish whether there is any basis for the Ruffin Ruthven stories.
I doubt it.

Take a look at Randy Regan's "Descendants on William Ruthven, 1st Earl of Gowrie" arguments. It states that the son, William Ruthven, fled to France to become an alchemist(chemist), later went to Sussex, England, and married an Englishwoman. They had a son, our William Ruffin ("Roffin").
William Ruthven died before he can teach his son to read and write.

That is entirely possible as there are so many Ruffin lines in both AL and GA.

If you have the birth-death dates on both your Mom and Dad we can also post those and perhaps you can get a connection that way.

We have attempted to post some Census records on this Ruffin page, but these depend on what people submit from their own research.

It is fun to find out about your ancestors, and if you tell a bit more about your family, maybe we can help. Does your Mother remember her parents or grandparents?

I don't know how else I can help other than what I told you . My sons father died in Ft Myers Florida in 1972 at age 20 . He had two children from 2 different women that he went with while he lived in Tampa and went to Tampa University in a special program . He had art work hanging up at the University . He attended Tampa U for about a year . possibly in 1967,68 or a few years before ,I don't know who their mothers are . I only know one (possibly both were of a Hispanic origin ). Possibly ones name was Joan ,and I think both children were girls . Those girls or children would be in their mid or later 30,s .This is all I have .Bennie (that died was light skin ,with African , Indian, and white heritage. Some of his relatives use the s at the end and some don't .
It ends with an s but other ruffin's that are related end with the letter n . I'm thinking someone slipped up . The ruffin's I know are having a family reunion coming up this year or in 2009 / they originated from Georgia , Alabama and are all over the south including Florida . Battles was a name that is related to ruffins also .

Hello. I'm helping my in-laws track down the Ruffin family. I've been able to track back to the gg-grandparents, but I can't find information on the g-grandparents. I'd appreciate any information you can give.

grandmother is Dorothy Marie Ruffin (1908) (married Roy Lee Townsend aka Townsell), her parents (unknown), her grandparents are Adam and Betty Ruffin of Chuckatuck, Nansemond, VA (1879 and 1881). She had a brother Walter, sisters Clarabell and Loretta.

North Carolina Ruffins

I was just informed that my great(4x's)grandfather was a plantation owner in North Carolina with the last name Ruffin. He had a child named Lucinda "Lucy" Ruffin with one of the slave women. Lucinda "Lucy" was born in 1820. I know that Lucinda married a man named Mr. Lewis and they had twelve children. Allen, Elix or Alex, William, Bridgette, Eliza and Daniel are the names that I know. My great(2x's)grandmother was Eliza. The five male children (names unknown) that were fair skinned kept the last name Ruffin and stayed on the east coast. The other seven children that were darker skinned moved to the west coast (Oakland/Fresno). They took the last name Lewis after their father. I am trying to find anyone that knows any information about my Ruffin family members...Thanks
