Samantha, I have just found the Rugens in my family tree - Henry Edward Rugen b 1852 Liverpool married Mary Jane Plunkett, my great grandaunt, in 1875. They had children Mary Jane, Florence Amelia, Herman Henry, Henry and Augustus Claud before she died at age 30. Henry remarried. His 2nd wife was Mary born in Dundalk Ireland. They had children Frederick, Evelyn, Louisa, Albert, George and Frank. I have recorded that Francis J Rugen married Kathleen E McHale 1923 and Henry E Rugen married Frances A McHale. I hope this fits with some of your family and is of use. If so and you are interested in pursuing the Plunkett side, just let me know.
Pam

Thankyou so much for the info about Wm. H. Rugen. I'm not far from the Glenview area. Is there a way to contact you via regular email? I have a few old pictures that I am unable to identify and I think they are either members of the Bulow family or connected to the Buelow family. I thought if someone else has old pictures of some of the relatives that maybe I could find someone whose faces in the pictures match.

William H. RUGEN was born Feb 1875 to Herman and Anna (SCHWINGE) RUGEN. Herman (16 Sep 1816 to 14 Sep 1896) was born in Hempstead, Hanover, Germany and died in Northfield Township, Cook Co, IL. Anna (23 Feb 1834 to 29 Jun 1912) was also born in Hanover, Germany and died in Northfield. They are both buried at St Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery in Northbrook, IL. Herman had 3 wives (all sisters) and 14 children, of which William H. was the 14th. My great-grandfather Henry was the 4th (his mother was Anna's sister Catherine who died in IL in 1859). Herman and Catherine immigrated in 1852/3, but I haven't found the ship yet. Anna arrived in NY 3 Jul 1857 from Paddewich, Germany via Bremen, aboard the H.VonGagern, with her brother Herman H. SCHWINGE.
Herman's father was Harm RUGEN (8 Apr 1783 to 20 Sep 1866) who was born in Hanover, Germany and died in Northfield Twp, IL. He is buried at St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery in Northbrook, IL. Herman's mother was Jesche Otten who apparently died in Germany.
Northfield Twp became Glenview, IL. The family home (gone now) was at one time the officers' club for the Glenview Naval Air Station (also gone now). I have a family reunion photo taken in front of it in 1925 showing 9 of the 14 siblings and their families (including my mother).

Dear Katherine
Spotted your reply to Mike Rugen (my cousin) on this website. Your right it is weird! My dad's name was Fred and he was the tailor from Tuebrook. My brother was also called Fred. I still live in Liverpool.

When I was child (about 6 or 7) my Great Aunt Lily would visit us quite often. I loved her, she was good fun. Was Albert your grandfather's father married to Lily? I'm sure she had son's called Carl and Cyril.

As Mike said his father George came from a large family he had many brothers Fred (my dad), Harry, Bill, Jack, Alf and one sister Florrie. I have not seen any of them for year's, except my Uncle Alf and Auntie Lily (his wife). I am sure my Uncle Alf would be fascinated with any info Cyril may have about the origins of the family.

Even weirder! I was looking at a photo of you last week Katherine! I'm Cheryl's youngest sister - Carl's daughter - your dad's cousin!
Here's a little more info based on what Uncle Cyril has told me.
Tietje Rugen was the Hannover chappie. The copy of the family tree I have says something about him being a sugar boiler / merchant and friendly with Mr Tate (of Tate & Lyle)
The split in the Liverpool family was due to the death of my great grandfather's first wife. He then married the housekeeper, who was my great grandmother, and they went on to have more children, including your dad's (and my) grandad, Albert.
My husband now teaches in Liverpool, although we live in Preston, and he has come across descendants of both branches of the family tree.
Say hello to your Mum and Dad! Hope the snow has melted there now!
Regards, Tracy
