Good Afternoon,
I would like to clear up some confusion about the Ruperts of Osnabruck Ontario. While researching some of the Upper Canada Land claims that the Rupert’s made I came across a claim from Peter Rupert that was rejected by the Crown on the grounds that he had already received his land.
It turns out there were two Peter Ruperts in Osnabruck and they were both brothers. The older brother was called Pador/Pater. This is the brother who married Catherine Littlefawn. In some UEL records he is referred to as Peter the Elder.
The younger brother is sometimes called Peter Jr. He married Elizabeth Helmer. They were both the sons of Adam Rupert. This was confirmed in correspondence from John Crysler who knew both of the brothers in Osnabruck and knew the family from the Mohawk Valley.
It wasn't uncommon for German families to give the same first name to a younger sibling.
