There are quite a few Ellens in our family tree, Williams, Margaret and both Ellen and Margaret a hundred years later arrived here from Ireland...Margaret was a Pollock who married Wm and is listed from Belfast...I wonder??? Her cousin or brother, not sure, was Edward Pollock, the reknown poet who died in California at an early age but still quite a bit on the internet about him. Our Rushton family settled in Philadelphia and I have quite a bit of info but also some gapping holes in it!!! William Sr in the 1800's was apparently called the Old Master and was a professional artist and politician. I have a large Lord's Prayer he did in ink, on the wall. I have Edward's works done in hand by his brother when Edw passed. We are directly connected to the Austins (Cornelia) and if anyone sees a connnection here I would love to hear from you...at zoezoe143@aol.com.

I am a descendant of Ann Bailey & Christopher Rushton (b abt 1781) via their son John (b 1820). The 1841 census states that Christopher was born in Yorkshire but I have yet to find his parents. He is definitely not the Christopher Rushton of similar age (but born in Aldborough/Kirby on the Moorside about 1775 who was married to Ellen). Sorting out the families is confusing because in each generation there are so many cousins & descendants with the same family first names. I am certain of my line back to Christopher because I have family bible and marriage records. I understood that the Joseph Rushton you mention was born in Calverley, Yorkshire, christened 8 Jun 1823 and married to Selina.
I'd be delighted to hear from you and have your input into our ancestors.

Re: George Rushton of Hamilton Co., Indiana

My wife's ggg grandfather was George Rushton, and we have been doing a little research on this branch of her family. According to my wife's great grandmother Zora Harbough, who we had been in contact with before she died some years ago, George's wife was Kathryn Needham. George's son William served in the Civil War and gave Zora his sword from the war. From what I have learned, George must have first moved to Hendricks County, Indiana, and then purchased property in Hamilton County. Have you learned anything since posting this?

I have recently been helping a friend, Graham Rushton, with his family tree. Jonathon Rushton is his GGG Grandfather also, so you will be 4th cousins..You may want to contact him at garushton68@aol.com. Also be aware, there exists a tree on ancestry.com which has a Jonathon Rushton (father Mark)going all the way back to 1083! The question is: is it the same Jonathon?

Do you know anything of Jonathon's ancestry?

All,

I have logged on to this site for the first time out of interest.

I am a Rushton, from Lancashire UK. My family thread is soundly based in either Lancashire or Cheshire (depending upon the generation).

The name William J. (James or John) Rushton has been a common name through out the family for many generations. As has the maritime occupation (either at sea or in the "Docks" - Birkenhead or Liverpool).

However if the local phone books along the Mersey (Manchester to Liverpool) are consulted, then it should be seen that there are lots of Rushtons currently living in this area.

I hope this helps in some way.

Richard (J.)

Re: James Rushton from Colne Lancashire to Bruce County, Ontario

Dear Andy:
I see your James and Sarah on the census of 1841,1851 and 1861. It looks like they were married 8 Nov 1840 in St Bartholomews, Colne. James Rushton son of William Rushton married Sarah Foulds daughter of Aaron Shaw. My first thought was that Sarah was a widow of someone Foulds. There is a 3 year old John Foulds living with her parents Aaron and Mary Shaw on the 1841 census. On the census of 1851 there is a James Shaw age 30 brother in law and John Shaw age 13 step son. So John Shaw and John Foulds may be the same person. To complicate this further the marriage for Aaron Shaw and Mary Foulds was 24 Dec 1818. So was Sarah born before her parents were married and that's why she used the name Fould's when she married. If you ordered in the film it would probably indicate whether or not she was a widow.

It looks like your James Rushton was born 5 March 1811 baptized 7 April 1811 son of William Rushton and Betty.( Film # 1471023)

Here is a possible theory of a link between my James 1819 and yours 1811. Could their fathers have been brothers? There was a family of William Rushton who married Peggy Hartley 11 Nov 1773. Their sons were James 1774 ( might be mine) Robert 1777, William 1779 ( might be yours) Hartley 1786 and Hiram 1788. All these entries were from Colne.

I'm also wondering if there is a link between your Rushtons and the George Rushton born 1816 and his brother William (birth? does someone know and who did he marry?) since they also settled in Brantford, Ontario.

Anne Goeden
Dear Jeff:
Check the message above from K Palmer. It looks like your Rushtons may be related to hers.

Since my original message, I have more info about my Rushtons. James Rushton ( born 1819 Colne died 1895, Elsinore, Bruce County, Ontario) was the son of James Rushton who died 20th March 1850 in Greenfield, Colne at the age of 73. The informant was his son Robert ( baptized 19 June 1814 in Colne, married 13 Oct 1844 to Mary Walton and died 1 March 1879, Primet Bridge, Colne) His wife was Margaret who died 16th October 1842 age 67. Informant Hartley Feather who I believe was husband of her niece. I believe that she was Peggy Shoesmith daughter of Jude and Mary Shoesmith and baptized 27 Oct 1776 in Colne. She married first husband Richard Nutter on 9 Nov 1797. He died 30 May 1804. She married James Rushton 25 Dec 1810 in St Bartholomew's Colne. They also had a daughter Margaret born 2 July 1811. On the marriage entry it says that Peggy Nutter was a widow but it doesn't say whether James was or not. They were both about 34 at time of their marriage so it is possible that James was a widower and had children from a previous marriage.

Re: RUSHTON, Thomas, Brewer of Liverpool

Thomas Rushton is mention several times in The Sydney Gazzette. He was apparently the Brewer for the New South wales Government Brewery in Parramatta which existed from 1804 to 1806 after which it went broke. Thomas Rushton then Bought it. The next report I have is that he was Granted a licence to brew beer in 1811 in Sydney 15 miles from Parramatta. I have no further info at the present time. I am interested in historical brewing in Austalia.
I am trying to find more historical evidence of his plight. I will try and inform you when and if found

Re: Rushton Liverpool Family Tree

At the moment there is a death plaque for sale on ebay for a Wilfred Rushton, son of John and Jessie Rushton, of 28 Linacre Lane, Bootle, Liverpool. He died in WWI. Wilfred Rushton was a driver in the Royal Field Artillery, Unit "D" Bty, 151st Bde. He was 18 and died 24/05/1916. His service number was 10800 and he is one of the Commonwealth War Dead. His grave memorial reference is A.41 and he is buried in La Neuville Communcal Cemetery, Corbie.

The death plaque is on ebay until Sept 25, 2007. It is available in the UK and can be found by searching ebay "rushton", category: "Collectibles".

I'm not exactly sure what a death plaque even is, but whilst I was looking on ebay for any Rushton references connected to my own family, I came across this one and thought perhaps someone reading this thread might have a connection to Wilfred Rushton of Liverpool. Hope it might find its way home to a family member.
