My husband (Eugene C. (Rust) Dunaway) is the great-great grandson of George Washington Rust and Keziah Arnold (George W.-Daniel Carson-Robert E. Lee-Elmer Cecil-Eugene C.). My husband was adopted by his mother's second husband. I believe you are the person who submitted the photo of Keziah & 3 of her sons, including Daniel Carson Rust, to the Russell Co., VA website. I have some family info on the Daniel Carson line if you would be interested in also sharing what you have with me.....? I look forward to your reply. Sue

It is very interesting! I have been finding it very difficult at times to research the Rust lineage. As i know that our connection at least goes to Bedford, England...prior to that it is a question...Huganouts??? Lot of Rust in Scottland, Belgium etc... So, any possible leads are greatly appreciated!

Hope you are having a wonderful time with your research and photos...It is great to know that someone out there is doing this type of research. It could come in very handy for someone...What a gold mine that would be!

Thank you for all that you are doing! There are not enough hours in a day to keep up with it all. Keep me in mind and hope that we might meet some day! The world is becoming a much smaller place with our connectivity on line.

Larry Dean Rust of Oklahoma, I wanted to make sure you received this. I am Troy Layne Rust, originally of Hardin, Missouri, presently residing in Leawood, Kansas. I still own the fourth generation farm located four miles north of Hardin, Missour along with the home built by Jacob Jackson Rust, son of Dr. Bushrod Rust II and grandson of Dr. Bushrod Rust, Sr. of Upperville, Virginia. I believe, Sr. was a son to Captain George Rust.

For those of you who have so kindly replied to my inquiry over the years, I thank you. I guess I lost track of the website. Anyway, I have recently been involved in my family tree and have found the following. I descend from a Capt. George Rust who had nine kids, one being Dr. Bushrod Rust, Sr who died in Upperville, VA in 1944.

Then Dr. Bushrod Rust II had ten children, one being J.J. or Jacob Jackson Rust who died in 1965. JJ & Florrie Rust had three children by the names of Yates Loudon Rust, Susan Rust and Bruner Rust. My father was Edward Loudon Rust, the son of Yates Loudon Rust. And I am therefore, the end of the line, being Troy Rust, no children.

According to records Dr. Bushrod Rust II came to Ray County in 1873 after practicing medicine like his father in VA. Dr. Bushrod Rust practiced medicine in the Shenandoah Valley of Upperville, Virginia. His second wife was also a physician, Dr. Elisabeth Shoupe. She inherited 160 acres in Ray County Missouri from her brother who was killed in the Civil War. In 1873 they traveled by railroad to St. Louis and by riverboat to Lexington, MO to the farm about nine miles north of Hardin, MO. Dr. Rust gave up his practice and became a prosperous farmer. Over time they had 560 acres. The first home burned and after the fire they built another. The only surviving piece of furniture from that first house was a grandfather clock they brought from out east that a member of the family has currently.

My great grandfather, Jacob Jackson Rust was born in 1865 so he would have been around eight years old when they came to Missouri.
The home I was raised in was apparently built for my Great Grandfather, JJ Rust and shows on Ray County, MO record as being constructed in 1880, built on a location, 3 1/2 miles north of Hardin, MO, purchased from MM Spurlock. I also have the 1913 Registration of said farm as the JJ Rust “Lone Pine Farm”…… The Lone Pine, the huge tree in the front yard has been removed in the past few weeks? I found this webpage that is dedicated to Dr. Bushrod Rust II’s brother Jackson Rust. Thus I might assume or it could be a coincidence that my Great Grandfather has that middle name.

I rememeber as a child living in a house that belonged to Milton and Tilly Rust.(Orange Co. Florida) Kinfolk to my father.
There was also a Julian Rust that I believe was my fathers cousin.
My grandfather Vernon Mace died in 1962 and is buried in Titusville, FL. He worked for Union Carbide in WV until he retired around 1960.

My grandfather Errington Ross had a cousin Alice Sewart Ross b 1871 who married one Dr Montague Rustb 1873c son of Thomas Alfred Rust photograher in India and Julia Clarke. After Alice died Monty moved to London and was named in divorce proceedings. His son Stanley was a ship's doctor. We find Montague in Worthing still practicing medicine when he was 70.
His brother Julian moved to South Africa from India.Julian an artist/ photograher married an Irish beauty Elizabeth Ann Nelligan and they had 3 live children Helen Maud 1914, Violet who predeceased her as did their brother Cecil T Cecil Rust who died in 1960 aged 55 in Westminster hospital, London. He had moved to Ceylon as a tea planter in 1925 and became the chairman of the The Times of Ceylon.
None of the girls were to marry and spent their lives travelling the world and painting. I think their father Julian died in 1946 and his wife Elizabeth died in Ceylon with her daughters.
For more see http://sundaytimes.lk/97030/plusm.html.They named their mansion house in Katugastota " Huntingdon Hall" in memory said Helen of their ancestral home in England.

Interesting old photographs, RUST, India

Hi. I have no Rust connections but run a website for identifying old photographs. I like to purchase albums that contain named portraits and try to research their origins and make connections with family history.

I recently acquired (aka rescued!) a couple of albums that have many named people, several of them being Rusts. In fact I suspect that they were owned by a Rust, although I am unclear which one. I will get some scans online as soon as I have time, but here's some brief outline info:

The captions show that the owner, possibly 'A Rust', was a clergyman and married the daughter of Rev. Joseph Walker in India (Calcutta?). She had a sister Lydia Webster.

His mother appears to have been French, possibly from Dunkerque, possibly with the surname Fonse La Vallier(e?), although that may be a location.

Also annotated in the albums are these names (I include estimates of age of the sitter, and the location and date of each photo where possible):

Norah Rust (in her teens, Luton, c. 1890s, daughter of our man A Rust)
Charlie Rust (photo missing)
Mrs Isaac Rust (40s, Brighton, c. 1870s annotated "3rd sister of my mother")
A Rust (annotated "26", no location, c. 1890s)
Harry Rust (30s, Santa Ana, California, c. 1900; annotated "my 2nd son.... now in a good position in America")
Willie - I believe this is another son of our A Rust.

From evidence in other captions our man was Port Chaplain in Calcutta, ordained in Calcutta by Bishop Milman in 1873. He was married in Calcutta to Miss Webster by Archdeacon Michell. There is lots of other information and plenty of photographs regarding his friends in India, including names Bromhead, General Murray (who it appears had hoped his daughter would marry our man!), Captain Sergeant, Mr Dear & his "native wife", Doctor Kermut, Mr & Mrs Lepage, Mrs Garland, Revd Joseph Webster (his father in law), Mr Powell (who became his brother in law by marrying his wife's sister Mary(?) Webster), another of his wife's sisters Lydia Webster, Dr Mountain, Captain Snowden, Mr Bridge.

Hope this is of interest to Rust family researchers, and if you want further information then please post comments here or get in touch directly. Regards, James

I see this was originally posted about eight years ago, but I just came across it. My great grandfather, Franklin George Rust family lived in Glidden, Carroll, Iowa. He was born in Wisconsin in 1852 and lived and died in 1929 in Glidden. My grandfather was his child from his first marriage, but I know there was a second marriage and family. One of the second family was William. If this rings a bell with you, I have lots of ancestor information back to the late 16th C. Carolyn

Troy,

If you haven't found it yet, there is a reference book
entitled "The Rust of Virginia" which may be found on line
or at one of the southern college libraries. I believe
this book will bring you up to the mid 1900's of the
Rust family that came over from England in the 1600's
and settled in the "northern neck of Virginia."

They were given land for tobacco farming. I believe the
"northern neck" may be very close to the same area.

I am tied to that same tree of Rust people and was able
to trace my roots all the way here to Okla.

The first one to come to VA from England was William.

Good luck, and hope you find the answers.

Sincerely,

Larry Dean Rust of Oklahoma

Elizabeth Ann "Nelligan" was actually a Milligan. Her parents were Francis Thomas Milligan & Rose. She had two sisters Cecilia Teresa and Frances. Cecilia married Arthur Keith Chapman in India. The attached photo was taken by Julian of my Great Grandmother Cecilia in 1930 - his sister-in-law.

Oh and sorry, in my search for more information I came across this website which has bits on Antique Photo's & the photographers: http://www.19cphoto.com/bios.html

"Thomas & Julian Rust
The first record of Thomas Rust as a photographer is in 1869 when he worked as an assistant to F.W. Baker in Calcutta. A year later he was running the Calcutta Photographic Company with W. T. Burgess and did so until 1874, so we can assume that he was already an experienced professional photographer before joining Baker. In 1874 Rust opened five of his own studios in Allahabad, Mussoorie, Murree, Landour and Meerut. Thomas Rust's landscapes are considered very artistic and he may well have had some formal training in this area. His son Julian joined the firm in 1899 and continued until 1914."

Sorry. Unfortunately not. My late Great Aunt Cecilia sent some information to my late Grandfather - her brother (both Chapman's - Cecilia Milligan's children). I have re-typed her notes and this is the only bit she has about them:
"MILLIGANS: Eldest daughter ELIZABETH married JULIAN RUST – an Artist and Photographer, in Mussoorie: Three children – CECIL, VIOLET, HELENE. None ever married – Cecil Rust died in Ceylon many years ago – he owned a Rubber Plantation : The girls when last heard from were in Ceylon (Sri Lanka), but there has been no contact."
The photo I attached had the inscription I mentioned on the back.
