In my previous posting, I did not mean to suggest that I viewed every page to find Joseph Ratledge. I found him using the index. This is just a suggestion but you might start with page 89 and view pages previous and following it. If that doesn't get you anywhere, you'll have to spread out your search by viewing more pages. Good luck!

I don't have your answer but I did find a Joseph Ratledge at the bottom of pg. 89. I've found that sometimes you have to put in the time by viewing every census page yourself. Indexers make mistakes.

RUTLEDGE of Montgomery Co. IL

To RUTLEDGE descendants:

Historic McCord Cemetery Needs You

A cemetery exists because lives are worth remembering. It pays homage to the lives that have gone before us and honors our veterans. Sadly, the nearly 175-year-old McCord Cemetery in Irving Township of Montgomery County, Illinois has declined over the years (photos are available upon request). Weedy vegetation has climbed over toppled gravestones and brambles have intertwined with historic markers, including those of veterans from the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Black Hawk War, and the Civil War. Many of the first settlers of the nearby community are interred here but the exact number may be lost to the ages. The sexton records and other records of the old McCord Cemetery Association cannot be found.

Families buried in McCord include: BOSTICK, CHAMBERS, COCKLERES, HAGOOD, HALLER, HANKS, HAYGOOD, HOGSETT, HUGHES, KERR, KNIGHT, LINXWILER, LOHR, MCCORD, PADEN, RICHARDSON, RUTLEDGE, SHORT, SMITH, SLAYBACK, SWING, WILLIAMS

McCord Cemetery needs your help now before it's too late. Perhaps you can come out for a cleanup day, or help map the cemetery or photograph cemetery markers. Are your skills and talents better suited for behind-the-scenes research? Perhaps you have access to local newspaper archives and can search for obituaries and death notices that mention burial in the cemetery. Or perhaps you have access to funeral notices, death registers, bible records, etc. that can be used in compiling a list of interments for those missing cemetery markers or unmarked graves. Please contact Joyce Williams aurien1@aol.com to volunteer. For those of you who are local, there is an organizational meeting planned for November 7 in Irving if you're able to attend.

How else can you help? Share this announcement with your fellow researchers. Post it on appropriate blogs and forums. And if you have family members buried at McCord or have photos of cemetery markers, contact Jeanne Johnson at jj@tampabay.rr.com

The Cemetery committee "Restore McCord" welcomes monetary donations. Much of the work will be provided freely by volunteers, but equipment, supplies, and some specialized services (such as restoring markers and searching for buried stones and interments) may need to be purchased. We could use someone experienced in historic grant applications also. Our recently-formed group will coordinate the much needed preservation, restoration, and maintenance efforts to McCord under the auspices of the award-winning Irving Area Historical Museum http://www.irvingmuseum.org/ The Museum, established in 1999, is a volunteer not-for-profit organization dedicated to preserving local history. Its members' dedicated efforts have been formally recognized by the 2002 Governor's Home Town Award and two Studs Terkel Humanities Service Awards. The Museum has set up a separate checking account for donations. If you'd like to help with the finances of this endeavor, please contact the museum at irvingmuseum@consolidated.net

We hope that you'll join us in the effort to protect this cemetery from extinction. Interment and inscription information from this effort will be distributed freely and we want to ensure continued maintenance of the cemetery grounds after restoration. Your help towards these worthwhile goals would be greatly appreciated. J. Johnson

FAQ
Where exactly is the McCord Cemetery located?
The cemetery is located in Irving Township of Montgomery County between Hillsboro & Irving communities on McCord's Trail. Other nearby communities are Taylor Springs, Butler, and Schram City.
Coordinates of the McCord Cemetery are: Latitude 39.1892139 Longitude -89.444809

What size is the McCord Cemetery?
It is approximately two acres.

Who do I contact to volunteer or for more information?
Joyce Williams aurien1@aol.com
I have tried to reach someone that has been going to those reunions in Mammonth Springs, AR? Opal Montgomery was keeping in contact with everyone but I can't get her on her phone or email. If you are of this lineage, would you please let me know. If Opal is kin to you, would you ask her to call or email me please. My information is still the same as before. Hope we are kin! You are the first one to contact me if we are.

Kin?
Brenda

Wiley and Jane Rutledge and said to be Cherokee Indian.....but I've also been told we were possibly Blackfoot or Creek. They had 10 children: Julie, Lee, Noah, Dora, John, Eugene, Molly, Neal, Emmaline and Ollie. Julie was born in 1865 I believe.
Re: Worthington Rutledge b. 1871 Illinois

I suggest you contact the local library that has genealogical resources (microfilm of deeds, estate files, and others). Here is their website http://www.waterloolibrary.org/Main.shtml

I agree that the evidence points to Worthington being the correct name. I believe "Washington" was a fluke on the census taker's part on the 1870 Monroe Co. IL census. It appears to me that you may have to research most of the Monroe Co. Rutledge families in hopes of learning more. However, I believe this "Washington" is possibly your Worthington in the 1870 census. The head of household is Wm. G. Rutledge and there is no wife. Did he die and Washington/Worthington was raised by James? The bro. of Washington is Seth and I found his marriage in 1886 in Monroe Co. so he was still around but not old enough to raise his little bro. Washington at the time if their father died. This may have been an informal arrangement. However, I would think that if Wm. G. Rutledge died, there would have been some kind of estate file and it may name who was to be the legal guardian of Wm.'s children.

Here's a few of my observations: The James Rutledge who is Worthington's uncle in the 1880 census appears to be the same James Rutledge, age 22, listed next to the Eliza Rutledge household in the 1850 census. In 1860, he is married to Mary. In 1870, her name is Polly but it is the same individual (Polly is a nickname for Mary) even though her age is a little off - which is not unusual from one census to another. Perhaps you should try to learn if there is a probate file/will in her name and also this Wm. G. Rutledge in the 1870 census who heads up the household that 2-yr-old "Washington" is found.

I would assume that the marriage record with "Worthington" is not a nickname but you know what they say about assumptions..... however, I do feel it IS Worthington.

Did your g-grandfather's death certificate record his mother's name? It may be time to check his siblings' death certificates to see if they provide that info also.

Most counties had local history books published in the 1880's that contained biographies of local citizens. The library may have access to this book and can check for Rutledge. Monroe County was one of the smallest IL counties and their local history may be combined with another county. The local historical or genealogical society may be a resource and may also have other records available.

Sorry, I have no info on Elijah. My datebase covers two generations before James Mayes Rutledge (b. 1798 GA - d. 1880 Montgomery Co. IL) and descendants. His Rutledge family members migrated to IL from Henderson Co. KY and settled in the following counties: White, McLean, Morgan, Sangamon, Montgomery.

Wow, thanks for the quick reply. I have been to the Monroe County Illinois genealogical website, but haven't gotten into the wills sections. I will pursue that.

I too saw the Washington/Worthington issue, but when looking at the scanned document, someone mistyped the name in the database.

I found a marriage record in Illinois for a Worthington Rutledge to Flora Hendrix in Monroe County. Is it typical to use nicknames on these documents?

In later census records Worthington and Flora list a son as Worthington, Jr.

On my great-grandfathers death certificate his father is listed at "Worthen", I assume short for Worthington. From family members I know that an uncle was referred to as "Worth", my assumption is this is Worthington, Jr.

It does seem odd that Worthington just suddenly appears, so you may be correct that William G & Worthington are one in the same.

Since posting, I have determined that Elijah Rutledge is Worthington/William G.'s grandfather. However, I cannot find any ancestral information on Elijah. Do you have Elijah Rutledge in your database? He was married to Amelia.

Hi Gary - I'm wondering if you have checked all the possible resources in Monroe Co. IL? Such as wills, probate files, deed transactions, court cases, cemetery records, etc. (especially wills/probate/death records for Wm. G. Rutledge who is found in the 1870 Monroe census with Washington Rutledge, age 2.) This would be my suggestion before you leap back to Kentucky. I found Rutledges in Monroe Co. IL back to the 1850 census. I didn't check earlier censuses, but a family that is one area for over 30 years has got to leave a trail in local records. Some of the surnames associated with the Rutledges in Monroe Co. are Bostwick and Isles through marriages and these families seemed to live near each other and Rutledge/Isle family members appear in one another's census households.

My hunch is that the Washington Rutledge, age 2, born in IL, that is in the 1870 Monroe IL census household with Wm. G. Rutledge is your Worthington. His age matches up with the 1880 census and I cannot find a Washington. Have you looked for a Washington Rutledge in Monroe Co. cemetery/death records to rule out my hunch? This hunch gains a little credence when I view the 1910 census for your Worthington. There seems to be some confusion between Washington and Worthington names there.

By the way, I am a descendant of one of the Rutledges that moved to Il around the 1820's from Henderson Co. KY. I have a large database of Rutledge family members and could not find a Worthington listed.

J.Johnson

SC State Archives - Rutledge

Regarding the Joseph and Mary Paschal Rutledge of Greenville, SC family.

Just to quickly and shortly summarize my findings at the SC State Archives.

In the Court of Common Pleas, Judgment Roll, Greenville, Co., SC where Paschal, Spencer B. and Littleberry Rutledge brought forth several law suits against (and this is an incomplete set of names I listed in my notes). Some of those sued were Creamer, Crawford, Filbert, Lester, Robbins, Salter, Spencer, Thompson, and Wilcox. I have copies of the court papers for Paschal Rutledge, Admin for Estate of Mary Rutledge vs. James Creamer and Blake Carlton (Feb 1822); and Spencer B. Rutledge vs. Samuel and Thomas R. Crawford (Oct 1824). (Some of these people the Rutledge men sued were familiar with the family, such as Lester. Paschal married Mary Lester. Robert Rutledge married Nancy Smithson, her mother was a Lester and her brother married a Mary Lester, too. The name Filbert could be Philbert or vice versa, since the handwriting was very flowing and hard to read.)

State of SC Criminal Court, Greenville, Co., SC. I have copies of the court papers for the State vs. L. B. Rutledge on Retailing without a License (bootlegging). This was a lengthy trial with many witnesses. He was convicted along with James A. Patterson on those charges. A discharge upon payment of a $100 fine. And, two separate proceedings for Joseph Rutledge (seems to be the son of Littleberry because the Senior Joseph was dead and they refer to him as a young man). The first was in August 1835; Joseph was accused of robbery of $5.75 from Josiah T. Pollard. After many months and sworn depositions the Judge dropped the case. Then in July 1838 Joseph was accused of Direct Larceny of stealing a silver watch worth $30 from E. I. Whitfield, while visiting a girl at the Whitfield property. He was found guilty and fined $400.

Court of General Sessions 1800 – 1909 – spring of 1822, Rutledge, S. B., charge of harboring Negros, page 519.

Petition of Guardianship –July 12, 1831 by Spencer B. Rutledge for the children of Polly A. Rutledge Philbert ,with her written consent and the children’s father, John Philbert, was now deceased. The children were listed: “three minors of the age of choice” were Martha Philbert, Nancy Philbert and John Archer Philbert; then, “three minors under the age of choice” were Polly Philbert, Elizabeth Philbert and Paschal Philbert. (What would be that age range, the “of the age of choice” and the “under the age of choice”? Does anyone know? This is a good record of their names. I had never seen the child John’s middle name, Archer, listed before. The document states that mother Polly has given written consent. Her death is listed as 1836. Where is she? Why did she give up her children?)

Genealogical Abstracts from Greenville County, SC: The Earliest Minute Books of Ten Baptist Churches, 1794 – 1850. – Listed under Fork Shoals Baptist Church is: Rutledge (last name only); Rutledge, Bro.; Rutledge, Spencer; Rutledge, Spinees. (This Spinees Rutledge? I’ve never hear of such a name. Has anyone seen this name before? It’s listed after Spencer’s; could it be his wife?).

Hope this helps someone - Jane in Georgia

Hello, and thank you. This is the gravestone of my grandfather, W.P. "Pink" Rutledge and his 2nd wife. I don't see a photo, but I'm very grateful that you taken the time to post this here. I am the daughter of his only daughter, Loma Edna Rutledge Keeling, who died in San Francisco, on March 21, 1958. If anyone in the Rutledge line would like to contact me, please do. I just want to know a bit more about him. Thanks to any and all.
Susan Keeling Haynes, Paris, Texas

I am researching Minnie McGhee. She is my grandmother on my mothers side. Her father was Thomas Gilbert Rutledge and her mother was Margaret Octavia Sisk. My computer crashed and I have lost all my info and am starting over. With ancerstery.com and places like this is has been easier. However, I still am missing several links in the chain. I have not been able to attend the Rutledge, Sisk, McGhee family reunions that are held in Mammouth Srpings, Mo. If someone from that area can help, I would appriciate it very much. Also, if anyone knows how to get ahold of Opal Montgomery; I would be delighted as the site and telephone number that I had for her isn't working anymore. Thanks so much for your help!
Brendaa

I'm interested in learning more about the RUTLEDGES in Botetourt Co. VA and WVA. In the 1785 Botetourt Co. census, the following are listed:
Gratton & RUTLEDGE
RUTLEDGE, Geo.
RUTLEDGE, Jno.
RUTLEDGE, James
RUTLEDGE, Thos.

In the 1786 Botetourt Co. WV tax list we have the same individual RUTLEDGE individuals.

John RUTLEDGE enlisted from Botetourt Co. VA in the Rev. War & served under Lt. H. Waterson. He is supposedly the same individual buried in the McCord Cemetery in Montgomery Co. Illinois (no dates on this interment record)who has been linked to this RW service record. My RUTLEDGE family is buried in this small cemetery and I am trying to establish a connection. Help greatly appreciated.

Worthington Rutledge b. 1871 Illinois

New to researching, I am stumped at Worthington Rutledge, my great great grandfather.

Worthington first appears on the 1880 census living with his Uncle James, b. 1825 KY, in Renault, Monroe, IL.

Worthington marries Flora Josephine Hendrix on 10 Oct 1889 in Monroe County, IL.

In the 1910 census Worthington is in Cooter, Pemsicot, MO with Flora. The children are:
Cara J b. 1891 Missouri
William b. 1894 Missouri (my great grandfather)
Harry D b. 1898 Missouri
Worthington Jr, 1901 Arkansas
Earsel, 1904 Missouri
Johanna, 1907 Missouri
Mattie, 1913 Missouri
Woodrow, 1917 Missouri

From the 1880 census I know that Worthington's father was born in Kentucky and his mother was born in Illinois. His uncle James was born in Kentucky as well. James' father was born in Virginia as was his mother.

From this I believe that a Rutledge migrated from Virginia to Kentucky, had some children, then those children migrated to Illinois.

Am having difficultly locating birth records for Kentucky. Have been through some census records for Henderson County Kentucky and four Robert, Thomas, James, and William Rutledge in 1810/20.

Any help/hints would be greatly appreciated.
Edna Rutledge

While sorting through photos owned by the Ash family of Missouri I found the attached photo of Edna Rutledge. I have not found a Rutledge connection with the Ash or other related family. Perhaps someone here knows her parentage.

Possible family connections: Hays, Garvey, Bryan, Downing, Ash,Yowell all from the Missouri area.

My information can be viewed at

www.familytomb.net/blog

click on "all surnames" for the database.

Robyn

Re: Rutledge/Rankin

Hello! Yes it has been awhile since I have visited this site! What I have is Mathew Rankin married Margaret Rutledge in the Drumnakilly Church of Ireland on Jan. 1, 1856. There is a Rutledge family in the near vacinity, as I had talked to the postmaster's wife and she said that a Rankin had just visited them (Rutledge's) recently -- that was 3 years ago when my 2 brothers and I had made a trip to Ireland to try to find Faccarry (very near to the church). Please contact me -- I would love to hear from you!
Darcy

Death of John Rutledge

Appears in the Terrell Times-Star, Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas, 31 January 1891...

John Rutledge, who had been sick for nearly a month at his room in town died Wednesday morning from blood poison caused from a large rising on his neck bursting internally before it was lanced. The death of his mother Monday had a depressing effect on him and he became excited and weaker from the time he was told of her death. His mother had been to see him frequently during his illness and other members of his family were constantly with him and he had the kind of attention of friends. He was a young man, robust and stout, and no one thought a month ago that death would claim him so soon. He had many dear friends who will sincerely mourn his death. He was buried at Elmo Wednesday by Terrell Knights of Pythias.
