I am looking for confirmed parentage and sibblings of Albert Ernest Ryall, a master mariner who was born in Liverpool in 1869. I have possibilities such as Jane Blaine and Henry Ryall but then Henry disapears which adds to my confusion, along with different parentage on Henry's wedding certificate. Also if anyone could shed any light on his life whilst he was a master mariner this would also be helpful. His wife was Alma May Violet Cleverly.
Many thanks.

Hello Barry
I have only just run across these communications. I am the younger brother that Graham mentioned. I fact you are right, most all do live in the South now since William Edward and Daisy ended up north of London after travels; but originally of Leeds. Having said that however, one of Graham's sons Matthew lives in the Halifax area. I myself live in America and have been here over 9 years now.
Oddly enough, when I was a much younger man, I work3ed for Lucas Aerospace in Hemel Hempstead as a Contracts Engineering. For a period of years I had to make very regular visits to Pudsey. I am sure it is very du=ifferent now!! neilryall@gmail.com

Kind regards
Neil

The person may have done this for his protection( maybe illegal immigrant or may have been in trouble with the law).

Just a thought, have you tried "Frank"? My grandfather was named Francis and he was called Frank all his life. Also did you try Frances on the Ellis Island site, it is the female form of Francis and if they were trying to pass him off as a girl it may have been spelled that way.

Another thing. Mary states in 1900 census that she was also born in New jersey. Perhaps it is the next generation back, her parents, that came through Ellis Island.

You have probably thought of all this but I figured I should mention it.

Denise:)

Yes,
I received all the information you sent me. You sent me one of when the Ryall's came over on a boat.

You asked me about a birth date of Francis Dunphy... he was born December 6,1890. Was wondering if you could locate him on a boat coming over from Ireland or possibly England.

In 1900, he's living w/ his mom in NJ. Can't locate him before this.

Have you seen the 1880 census? Next door to Edward, Anna and family is a William Ryal age 23 and family. He was born in England. I would bet anything that this was Anna's brother.
I had a look at New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957 and on June 27 1870 on a ship named the Idaho I found (attached) Mary A. Ryhall 36 and daughters Ann age 10 and Jane an infant and on the next page of the passenger list (also attached) there was William Ryall age 13 and Margaret Ryall age 15. I think this may be your family.
I have found this family in Saratoga Springs in 1880 father is William a Farmer. Daughter Maggie (Margaret) is married to Frank McMann. Of course Anna/Ann/Annie and William are not with this family as by 1880 they were both married with families of their own.

Best Wishes,
Denise
Ryall/Kerwick from Tipperary

I'm trying to find information on the parents of Margaret Kerwick and James Ryall. They're from Cashel, Tipperary, Ireland. She migrated to the US in 1851. From censuses, she was born around 1810. She left for New York two years earlier than her family. Her husband and children left for the US in 1853. They set down in the Albany, New York area. She passed away in 1895. He, unfortunately, passed away a few years after he arrived in the US in 1857. James' parents' names are John and Mary. I do not have the maiden name for Mary.

James, from what I have found, had three other brothers- John, George, and Michael. George left for Australia, and the other two left for the US. I do not have a lot of info on John and Michael. Michael might have stayed in NY with one of James' son according to a census. I have come across a bit of info of George in Australia.

James and Margaret had seven children. The first five, John, James, Elizabeth, Mary Ann, and Thomas were all born in Ireland. Edward and Margaret, the last two, were born in NY. I came across an article stating Elizabeth and Mary Ann stayed behind in Ireland and lived with their grandmother (no name). I can only imagine they stayed behind because of a sickness. The two girls died young. Elizabeth was born in 1845 and died in 1854. Mary Ann was born and died in 1848 and 1859. Those dates are only estimates.

John and James fought in the US's Civil War. Both were injured. James, Jr., is my third great grandfather, and I believe he died from complications of the injury in later years. He lived and died from 1841-1881. John was a judge in New Scotland, NY for a number of years. Edward died as a teen, Thomas dropped off the map, and Margaret married and lived in NY.

Any information on James Ryall and Margaret Kerwick would be appreciated. Thanks-

Jordan brownjord@yahoo.com

Re: RYALLs of Ireland in 1800s

I, too, have Ryalls that came to NY from Ireland, county Tipperary. James and Margaret Ryall came to the US in 1853 and 1851, respectively (Margaret came first, leaving her family behind. The rest followed). They had seven children- John, James, Elizabeth, Mary Ann, Thomas, Edward, and Margaret. Elizabeth and Mary Ann stayed in Ireland for some reason and passed away as children.

I don't think we have the same Thomas. Most the family stayed in the Albany and Lloyd areas. Also, as far as I can tell, Thomas passed away before 1895. He was born in 1850.

If there is any connection, it might come from James, Sr. He had three brothers. George ended up in Australia. According to an article I came across, his two other brothers, Michael and John, came to the US. I'm not sure where they ended up. George, the one in Australia, had a son named Thomas. Maybe one of the other brothers that came to the US also had a son Thomas. Thomas and John are common names. If any of this sounds familiar, please let me know.

Back to the original James and Margaret: their two sons, James and John, fought in the Civil War. Both were wounded. John fought at Gettysburg, and James (my 3rd great grandfather) was mustered out a captain.

Good luck. Maybe our Ryalls intertwine somehow-

Jordan (brownjord@yahoo.com)

Barry,
Having recently picked up on the family hunt again, I came across your communications with Lindsay - which gave me some useful info.
I am Graham Ryall, son of Harold, Grandson of William Edward and G.G of Joseph Patrick. I have tow brothers, Colin and Neil and a sister Alison (Mountfort).
I have five sons Benjamin, Thomas, Matthew, Joshua and Zachary. So as you can see the family tree is spreading nicely. Not much action in the latest generation though!
Regards

Hello. I'm looking for information on a Ryall family from Albany, New York- New Scotland area.

Mother: Margaret (1811-)
Sons: John (1839-1929), James (1842-1881), Thomas(1850-), Edward (1852-1870)
Dau: Margaret (1855-)

I'm assuming this is the correct family I'm looking for. James Ryall married Mary Chesebrough. They are my g-g-g-grandparents. By probabilities I assumed James' immediate family is what I have stated. His brother John was a justice of the peace in Voorheesville, NY.

Any leads would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Jordan (brownjord@yahoo.com)

Dear distant cousin, thanks for the reply what a small world we live in!I live in Wetherby,West Yorks.and my mother, who is ninety years old now still lives in Leeds with my two brothers. Her maiden name was Doreen Ryall and her house is roughly 100yards from where her vaguely remembered "Uncle Alf" used to live in Bellbrooke Grove. When Joseph and Alfred both left the Police they became commisionaires,Joseph with the G.P.O.in Leeds City Square and Alfred at the Tower Picture House on Briggate. In fact we think we have an old photo of the latter in his uniform complete with waxed moustache!Oddly some time ago I was in contact with another newly found distant cousin, with relatives in Sheffield and Leeds, who had done a lot of work on the Ryalls and he lives in Surrey also,at Egham. As you can probably tell I have only been on the net for a few weeks now much to the amusement of my children and grandchildren and i am quickly developing a cauliflower forefinger!I sent Steven in Egham copies of photographs, both military and civilian, plus copies of certificates and letters with regard our past relatives and would wish to do the same to you as you suggest. In order to arrange this my MOB.NO.is 07919 873891.Look forward to hearing from you, regards Barry,

Hi Barry
I was really excited to get your reply. I have spent nearly 10 years trying to trace the Ryall family. My great-grandfather was Charles Ryall, one of William's sons. I know that he served in the same regiment as William and his brothers but I could find no details at Kew. He married in Leeds and had two daughters,Irene Lilian married my grandfather Ernest Wooff. She died of bowel cancer on her 40th birthday during the war.
I would be so grateful for a copy of the letter and any other documents you have. I had no idea that two of the boys were in school, but I did trace Margaret and her daughter on the census in Leeds. I also found the marriage of William's parents Denis and Mary Monahan on 18 August 1819; and William's baptism in 1824. He had two sisters and two brothers that are listed in the parish registers. I am happy to copy and records that you may not have if you are happy to do the same.
I live in Surrey, England where are you?
Many thanks
Lindsay

Hi Lindsay, that was quick!I believe Williams wife was called Margaret Moriarty prior to their marriage on 9th November 1844.The family have an original hand written letter from what looks like an officers hand detailing WILLIAMS date of death on 26th August 1862 as killed whilst in the performance of his duties at 2 o,clock parade by a private named Tynan of the company to which he was Colour Pay Sergeant. He left a wife, six sons and one daughter. There are four sons at present serving in the regiment one of whom is sergeant the other three are in the regimental band. There are two sons at the Duke of York School the mother and daughter maintained by her sons.We know from regimental records that Tynan was discharged during the following year 1863 so can only assume Williams death was some kind of tragic accident. All the best,Barry

Hi
Thanks for your reply. Since I posted this in 2002 I have contacted St John's church in Tralee and have traced the family back to William's parents and have a maiden name for William's wife Margaret. I am happy to forward this information to you if you don't already have it. Can you tell me how you discovered the cause of William's death, when I went to Kew the only info was a gunshot wound but not the circumstances.
Thanks Lindsay

Joseph Patrick Ryall, son of William Ryall and brother of Charles Alfred Ryall was my great grandfather and was too a policeman with Leeds City Police. The menfolk prior to this were all in the 17th Regiment of Foot serving in Ireland and Quebec where sadly William a Colour Sergeant it seems was accidentally killed by one of his own Privates on pay parade. The family originally came from the Tralee area of County Kerry and on discharge from the 17th all settled in the Leeds area of West Yorkshire.
