Hi there , are you Don's Judy?

If so Hi it is Maureen here (Jerome's) daughter.

If you are another Judith then hello as well.
I am so trying to find out where the ancestors came from.

My Dad's Grandfather William Ryan - Buried in the St. Joseph's Cemetry, Newfoundland Died in June 26 1925 at 60 years old. He would have been born around 1865.

My Dad's name is Jerome Ryan 1925 - 2009 and his Dad is Jerome as well died Oct 25, 1976 age 85 years.

I was so excited to see this post.
So maybe Dads ancestors came from Wexford then.
I do not know what year they came over I wish I did.

If you have any more info please advise.
I am just waiting to see from what part of Ireland they came from for sure as I want to go visit.
But I will wait till I find out.

Maureen

Hi Don,

Maureen here.
Just wanted to say hi and was glad to see the post on the message Board. Of course Barth was Poppy Ryan's (Jerome) brother. Am I right.
Please if you still have a copy of the family tree I would love to get another.
Mine got lost in my move. I am so mad at the movers.
I will call you.

Oh and Hello to all the Ryan Ancestors.

Cheers - Maureen

Carol, If you subscribe to ancestry.com you can go yo
the naturalization and immigration and find this source
of information. Did you ancestor Michael Ryan serve in
the Civil War? I notice a Catherine Ryan who received
a pension from the service of Michael Ryan in Illinois.
When did Michael Ryan die?

My Michael was not known to be in Rockford until at least 1864. Where did you find the naturalization info?

Thank you for your help!
Carol Ryan

Update

The individual I was looking for in the post above was actually Thomas Francis Ryan, born 7 Dec 1921 in Aughera, Teelin, Parish of Glencolumbkille, County Donegal, Ireland. His parents were Patrick Ryan of Aughera and Anne Cassidy of Croaghlin, Teelin. Thomas immigrated in 1926 with his mother and brother, Neil, to his father in Jersey City, NJ.

Thomas Francis Ryan was killed 30 Aug 1942 while serving as a fireman 3rd class aboard the USS Colhoun. The USS Colhoun was a fast destroyer and was sunk by Japanese bombers while supporting the Marine landings at Guadalcanal. Thomas was listed as missing in action. Six men were killed, 45 declared missing in action and 18 were wounded in the attack on the USS Colhoun.
John Ryan wed Mary Ryan

according to the marriage records in Castleconnell, Limerick Church on Jan. 11, 1878. Both were from O'Briens Bridge Limerick, Civil parishes of Stradbally' Killeenagarriff and Fedamore. The sponsors were John Aherne and Catherine BEHAN. I think this John Ryan might be the brother of Denis Ryan who married Mary Lacy on Jan. 31 1869 at the same Church. John was born to Denis and Mary Ahern on 1852/05/21 and and the Family was living in East Gortshane just outside of Newport, Tipp. It is possible they later live on the Old Bog Road.

I say this because Denis Ryan (see above) had a son John born on Feb. 2, 1874 and his sponsors were .John Ahern and Catherine BEHAN. It is also possible that John Ahern is related to Mary Ahern, Denis and Johns mother.

See Photos of Ryan and Ahern headstones in the Castleconnel
Cemetary on Pat Connors Limerick site.

Thank you
Bob Ryan
ryanblack@cox.net
Ireland.

I did notice two Michael Ryans who were naturalized in
Rockford, Il. One was on May 6, 1858 with witnesses
named Patrick Connover and William Ryan. The other was
dated Oct. 7, 1858 with witnesses Michael Baker and
Alexander Van Bracklin

Greetings Jim, Thank you for your kind offer. Would you see what you can find on:
Michael Ryan dob abt Apr 1833 in Tipperary to parents: Michael and Ellen Ryan. I do not know Ellen's maiden name nor any other info on them.

Michael and Ellen Ryan also had a daughter, Jane dob May 1828 in Tipperary.

The year of Michael's birth may not be accurate but is close. Both Michael and Jane came to the USA abt 1850-55. I do not know if their parents or any other sibs came.

Michael married Catherine O'Donnell in NJ in 1861, they moved to Rockford, IL abt 1864. Jane Ryan married Patrick Dignan in NJ in abt 1858, also moved to Rockford abt same time as her brother, Michael.

Any help is greatly appreciated!
Blessings,
C Ryan

Re: William John Ryan born c 1867 County Clare, Ireland

You still want to get as much information together as you can. If they followed the traditional Irish naming pattern with their children, 1st son , father's father; 2nd son mother's father; 1st daughter- mother's mother; 2nd daughter, father's mother you could then make an educated guess about William's mother's first name. In addition you haven't mentioned Church records - marriage, baptismal for their children - the sponsors in these records are often siblings or cousins of the parents which could give you alternative folks to work with. In terms of the 1901 census, could they have been living in Ireland at that time for some reason? And if worse comes to worse, if William was always consistent about being born in 1867, you could track the civil registration for every William Ryan born in Clare in 1867 - I doubt you would have more than 20 William Ryan in that particualr year. just some possibilities.

Hi Bob.
All the info I have is in my original post...
But this is what i have so far.. William John Ryan was born c1867 in County Clare (that info came from 1911 census and his marriage details)
He was stationed on Jersey as a gunner in the Royal artillery by 1891 he married my great grandmother Elizabeth Ellen Paul on Jersey in 1890. Although i have not seen the original certificate it says his fathers name was John and he was a labourer. They then had several children. I cannot find them on the 1901 census. I know they lived in Deal, kent for a while and by 1911 they had moved to Southampton, and he had left the army. William Ryan died in 1914 in Southampton.
I do not know where he was living when he joined the army, (Ireland or England) I understand that Army records may have parents names and the address the person was living at at the time they joined up? But I wouldnt know where to send a request for his records.
Any help is very much appreciated.
kind regards
sarah
My great grandfather, John Ryan, (1857-1923) from Newmarket-on-Fergus, Co. Clare, emigrated to Brooklyn abt 1885, married Annie McMahon, also from Newmarket in 1892 and resided Red hook/South Brooklyn area in the parishes of St. Stephen and St. Mary Star of the Sea. The Ryans had 3 children, Edward John b1893, Michael Joseph b. 1894, and Anna b 1903. A young relative from ireland did come and stay with them awhile and showed up at Edward's wake in 1941 but she was vaguely remembered as Mary Collins or Mary Ryan but that is not certain.

The church record I have from Ireland is from the Cathedral
of the Assumnption in Thurles and dated from 1795 to 1855.
There are no printed records covering the 20th century in
either microfilm or printed form. Baptisms from the town
of Tipperary for the date you are asking (1917) can only
gotten by writing to the church in Ireland.

Town of Tipperary records on microfilm at LDS from 1793 to 1848 only.

I know of one son John Joseph Ryan who emigrated to USA in 1906 and married Nora Berkery of Ballyvorheen, Cappamore, Co Limerick. Does any of this connect with what you have?
Thanks for your response. We were actually at the church last week, but the only books in the office were from 1939 on. The "old" ones were up at the archdeacon's home and the bishop was due any moment for lunch so we were unable to get a look at them. Unfortunately we were unable to wait an extra day. I'll try writing to them and see what happens. Thanks again. Peg

My great-grandfather, Patrick Ryan, was born about 1835 in Ireland. He married Mary Henry, who was born about 1839 to Patrick Henry and Bridget (maiden name unknown). Their first son, Patrick J. Ryan, was born in March 1870 in County Mayo. The place of Patrick J.'s birth was learned from his son's WWI Draft Registration card.

Sometime between 1870-1873 (the latter year being the year of birth of their son Thomas), this couple immigrated to Boston with son Patrick J. The elder Patrick worked as a laborer. Their known American-born children are as follows:
Thomas, born 10 May 1873 in Boston
Nellie, born March 1875 in Boston (my great-grandmother)
John, born 28 Nov 1877 in Boston

Mary Henry died in Boston of consumption and an enlarged heart on 22 Aug 1880. I have been unable thus far to find any death information for her husband Patrick.

Patrick J. Ryan went on to marry Annie Driscoll and have 6 children before dying on 28 Nov 1906 in Boston of pnumonia from ether & exposure, secondary to severe indigestion. His widow, Annie, married Fred Thorne in 1908.

Nellie Ryan married John Gibbons and relocated to Brockton, Mass, where they had 3 daughters; one of which was my grandmother, Isabelle Mary Gibbons. John Gibbons was from Mill Village in Nova Scotia. John's grandfather, Charles, was from Ireland as well, but I have no information other than that about him.

I would love to hear from anyone who may have a connection to this family, as this is all the information I have for this family.

Thank you,
Jolynn Noel Winland
