My great-grandparents were John Ryer and Betsy Spinney. John was born in Wilmot NS. The family emigrated to Massachusetts with my grandfather, James Robert Ryer. My father, Lewis, was born and died in Middleton, Mass. My grandfather, James, also died in Middleton, as did my grandmother, Sarah Milbury Ryer. Apparently there was a John Ryer and Betsey Spinney born in Wilmot who had a daughter, Mary Elizabeth. They moved to Middleton. There seemed to be no mention of them having a son named James, but the circumstances are too identical.
