Pioneer history of Muskegon County, MI

I have just bought a piece of land in Cedar Creek Twp, Muskegon County, MI. The next major road to the north is Ryerson and the main drag north south in the vicinity is Maple Island (the county line between Newaygo and Musk.) There isn't much of an old town but there is a very old general store just south of the Muskegon River on Maple Island. Muskegon County was lumbered off in the mid 1800s. One of the "lumbar barons" was Martin Ryerson. He also built a sawmill somewhere on Maple Island near the river and I wonder if the general store that is there presently is associated. The woods I now own had definitely been lumbered off but have remained untouched since the 1800s. I am looking for previous owners of land in section 23 of the TWP and any info on Cedar Creek TWP, the Ryersons and the Sweeters (another family for which Sweeter Road was named for - road just north of the river and general store heading west into Cedar Creek TWP.) Please email me direct as I do not know for sure when I'll be back to check in. Kelly

In my line of work, I come across a lot of historical information which may (or may not) be helpful to you. Here is some info on Ryerson of Ridgewood, NJ:

*In 1888, Edward F. Ryerson established his first coal yards, the Edward F. Ryerson Coal Company, on Rock Avenue in Ridgewood. One year later, Ryerson moved his establishment to the current location along the railroad tracks, just north of Franklin Avenue. In 1897, George W. Young and Richard Bortic became the successors to Ryerson’s establishment and changed the name to the Young & Bortic Coal Company, which later became the Young and Bortic Fuel Company. Young & Bortic sold anthracite coal, blacksmith coal, kindling wood, and Pratt’s food for poultry, horses, and cattle.*

Please email only if you need sources.

Ryerson - Warwick, Orange County, New York

Last night I discovered that my Grandfather (Donald Hyatt, b 1914) had half siblings from his mother's first marriage. Their names are Elizabeth Ryerson (b 1905), J Walter Ryerson (b 1908) and Loyd T Ryerson (b 1910). They appear in the 1920 Census (listed as Ryers) living with their maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Quackenbush and their maternal aunt, Annie Quackenbush and again with their aunt in the 1930 census. My grandfather may have not remembered these children (if he knew them at all) as their mother died about 1918. Does anyone know of these family members or their decendants?

Does anyone know the connection between Riker and Ryerson. As late as Nov. 2003 Bob Riker has been posting to the Ryerson and Riker boards. He mentioned in one of his posts that he had info on Harold K. Ryerson b. Feb. 13, 1886
this person is the step brother of my cousin Mary Isabel Taylor and I am trying to find information. I believe he married someone by the name of Edna and they resided in Williston Park, NY a suburb of Manhattan on Long Island. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Mary Louise Taylor Marcelic

Ryersons in N.J.

For all those looking for Ryersons -- hope this helps with the search. I accidently saw this group. I am the last true blood son of my father. Unless I have a son the name and bloodline ends with me in South Jersey. My parents were divorced early in my life. On the Ryerson side there were my grandparents William Ryerson and Dorothy (Weis) Ryerson. They had four children William Jr., Dolores, Randolph Wayne Ryerson, and Lisa. They all lived in the Pleasantville N.J. area. Don't know their whereabouts today. What I know: William Ryerson Jr. was a Viet Nam war hero and I once saw an article from the Atlantic City Press to prove it. Randolph Wayne Ryerson was a Chief Petty Officer on the USS Kitty Hawk during Viet Nam. Lisa definitely married and had several children and did not keep the Ryerson name. Dolores had at least one child named Karen, who I accidently met while attending high school. The others I don't know much about. My grandmother once told me of how the Ryersons of our line had attained great wealth in Cuba in the sugarcane business and were rewarded with a sword covered with jewels as an honor from the Queen of Spain. I'm thinking this was in the 1700s. According to the tale, the Ryersons were eventually driven out of Cuba by a new government and all prosperity was lost -- including the sword. Best Wishes to the group.

She married John Bostwick (son of Rev Gideon Bostwick, Great Barrington, MA) and had 7 children in and around Pt Stanley Ontario.

Family legend, and a handwritten genealogy from the 1960's say one of her daughters married a John Tenbroeck in the early - mid 19th c.

Does anyone have any information on this line of the family?

My ancestor was Tunis Ryerson (b:1830ish). He supposedly was one of three brothers to become wealthy through lumbering in Michigan. He married Rose Anderson (b: 1835 Quebec). Died 11 July 1871 in Elgin, Illinois. Rose purchased burial plots at Graceland Cemetery in Chicago on 12 July 1871 (on record from the cemetery). Martin Ryerson (the lumber baron has a monument there). I have nothing that connects Tunis to Martin & Richard Ryerson other than lumber-business wealth, Michigan, and Chicago. I have found that he is from Paterson, Passaic County, NJ. Other Ryersons (other Martins too) were into the Ironworks industry (& wealth) in Passaic Country (Greenwood/Ringwood) as well. Same family?

thanks for any help or links to appropriate people.
Pete Hanson (CT)

The articles in “From the Archives” are reprinted from previous editions of The New jersey Herald, which began publication in 1829; the Sussex Register, which began in 1814; and the Sussex Independent, which began in 1871. The stories appear in their original form, although some have been edited for length.
March 21, 1901: Vernon, NJ. The one hundredth anniversary of the settling upon a farm near Glenwood of Nicholas Ryerson, now occupied by one of his daughters, widow of the late Peter Brown, and her son, M.R. Brown, was celebrated in a most enjoyable manner with a social for the benefit of the Glenwood Baptist Church, on Wednesday evening last. Notwithstanding the rough roads and the cold weather, a goodly number were present. About twenty-one dollar were made, and everyone returned home feeling tht they had spent a pleasant evening."
I am trying to research information on my Grandfather's family. His name was Henry Ryerson and the lineage went as follows : Martin - Joris - Johannis - Hassels - Enoch(Nicholas)- John Nicholas - Daniel Bailey - Henry.

My Grandfather lived in the Orange Co., NY area and he had a brother named Leslie (there are other siblings...names unknown)and his Mother was Cora Melvina (Hewlett). There is a great deal of histoical info on the earlier generations, but the trail turns cold in the last few generations. If anyone has any info I would greatly appreciate it.

Richard Klingman - Morristown, NJ

Mrs. Martin Ryerson of Warwick, NY

I have a newspaper clipping with no date. This is about my great grandmother. I deduce the date of the news article to be June, 1939.

"Mrs. Martin Ryerson of 92 Main St., will celebrate her eighty-eighth birthday Friday, June 16th. It is a pleasure to call on Mrs. Ryerson. Seated in an easy chair, her fingers are busy with a bit of patchwork. Newspapers and magazines are near at hand and the radio is within reach because her mind is keen and active and she is interested in all that is happening especially in all the doings of the Roosevelt family. An only granddaughter of a cousin with whom Mrs. Ryerson spent her girlhood and whose relationship was as close as a sister's is the wife of Elliott Roosevelt.

"Mrs. Ryerson was born in Burlington, Iowa, June 16, 1851. She graduated from Burlington High School, June 17, 1870, and was married on June 17, 1885, so this June week is quite a memorable one to her. Mrs. Ryerson came to Warwick in 1899, a year after the Spanish war."

My Grandfather's name was Martin C. Ryerson. He lived at the end of his life in Newark, NJ.

A maiden aunt, Edna Ryerson, lived on Main St. in Warwick until 1958, then moved to another house in Warwick. She died about 1963 or 1964.

My father was Martin George Ryerson. He died in Manassas, VA in 1971. He had a brother Charles and a sister Mary, both living, I believe.

I have one brother, Marshall Gregory, born in Madrid, Spain, 1954.

I was born in Clovis, NM, in 1945.

I just happened on this site while surfing the web. I never got into genealogy much, but it would be interesting if anyone could connect to this information.

Thanks.

A Ryerson Family Bible

Genealogies of New Jersey Families, Volume II, A Ryerson Family Bible, p. 606:

There are two published Ryerson genealogies of acceptable quality in the writer's library [D. Stanton Hammond]. The first by Louis Johnes Ryerson, A.M., published and copywrited (N.Y., 1902), a book of 89 pages with an index "of sorts" and a difficult numeration system. The second by Albert Winslow Ryerson, a handsome, quarto volume of 433 pages, privately printed for Edward L. Ryerson of Chicago in 1916. The numeration system and indices are quite satisfactory. These facts are noted to show the sustained interest in their family history by the Ryerson descendants.

The 1902 volume starts out with Marten Reyerson and his wife Annetje Rapelje, married May 14, 1663 and their ten children:

1. Marritje, Baptized November 16, 1664
2. Joris (George), Baptized September 19, 1666
3. Ryer (Uriah), Baptized 1669
4. Cathalyntie (Catherine), Baptized January 3, 1671
5. Sara, Baptized May 30, 1673
6. Helena, Baptized ?
7. Jacobus, Baptized December 27, 1677
8. Cornelius, Baptized ?
9. Syntje, Baptized April 2, 1682
10. Frans, Baptized August 2, 1685

No further mention is made of Cornelius (#8) in the 1902 volume.

I've been told by a distant relative that I happened to meet that the Ryerson family here in America is decended from nobility that came here because of a death order placed on all the males by the Catholic Church. Is that true? If so, what is the royal family? Are there any surviving members still in Europe?

Cleophas Ryerson, IL (1890-1971)

I recently acquired a painting signed "Cleo Ryerson". The Art Institute of Chicago was able to locate a Cleophas Ryerson who has taken a class there in 1949. SS shows a Cleophas Ryerson as having died in Evanston, Cook, IL.

I am looking for any additional information on Cleo, and am also wondering if she might be related to Margery Ryerson, a student of the painter Robert Henry. Margery seems to have died in NY.

Thanks!
Angela

Middle Name "Relative"?

I'm researching the connection to "middle" names of my uncles ..
Ryerson, Grimes & Peavey.

I have little information on my grandmother ( Lillian Teresa Baynard) or her children, Steven Peavey Yaag, John Grimes Yaag, Henry Ryerson Anthony Yaag (my father) & Fred Yaag.

From what I was able to gather, Lillian T. Baynard was adopted by a Baynard family, somewhere on the East coast. I believe they also had other children. Her adopted parents deceased sometime during Lillian's age of late teens or early twenties.

Lillian had at least four son's (from various fathers, whose names are unknown - even her sons don't have any background on their true fathers). The boy's were placed in boy's homes/farms, because Lillian was unable to support them.

Any information would be appreciated.
