Hi,

I found a photo marked on the back as "Paul Ryerson" and taken in Paterson, NJ. Please contact me ay m@mnovakdesign.com if you would like a high-resolution scan.

M

I was checking Ancestry.com when I came across someone who had Hassel Ryerson as the father of Stephen & married to Theodosia Earl in 1771. Doesn't match up with Stephen who was supposed to be born in 1763. Anyone know anything about this?

What I do know is that my grandfather Joseph Leslie Ryerson was his brother. I also know of another brother, my uncle Charlie whom I believe had no children but I could be mistaken. My grandfather had three sons and a step-son. They all lived in Goshen NY. My father might be able to offer more info, if you want I will send him to this site.

My husband is a direct decendent of Stephen Ryerson/Rierson/Riason/Ryenson etc. & because of the roadblock in finding any siblings or parents of Stephen I had my husband do an paternal Y-dna test & it came back as (per the World Haplogroup predictor) R1b- S. Irish 40% & Frisian2-31%, Frisian3-8%, Frisian-4%, R1b-3%, R1b-S28-2%, R1b-UB-2% & R1b-Irish-Continental-1%.
If anyone who has or believes they have a Ryerson line and has had a paternal dna test done & would like to compare & see if we can break this brickwall please contact me.
I was surprised as anyone to find an Irish background along with a Holland/Germany coastal Frisian line. If anyone has or knows of a Frisian dna project please let me know.
Lets all try work together to continue the Ryerson line into the earlier generations.

I am Gordon L Ryerson III and although I do not know anything about a Stephen Ryerson, my understanding of our family lineage is from costal Holland about the time of the establishment of New Amsterdam in what is now NY.

It also appears that there have over the years, been a number of different spellings of the name, likely phonetic spellings of local languages and dialects.

Also looking at the history of peoples in Holland prior to the founding of colonies in America, there was a lot of movement from what is now Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Germany to Holland - primarily for job seekers since Holland at the time was a leading economic power and trading capital for the known world (also religiously tolerant).

Not sure about the Irish bit since that is new to me. Scandanavian, Dutch and German are all consistant with most Ryersons or names of similar spelling.

Others have mentioned that their families have heard that they had Rierson/Ryerson ancestors that were Irish. Since my husband's dna test we know he is part Irish & the rumors are probably true.

My great grandfather was Reinert Reierson, of McFarland Wisconsin (b: 20 JUN 1855 , d: 17 SEP 1929). He was married to Gertrude "Josie" (Olson) Reierson of Cottage Grove, Wi. From what I have found, Reinert was from Haugesund Norway near Stavanger (came to US in 1887 at age 32). Maybe there is some connection to you or the other people in this email chain. I am not very good at this ancestry stuff. Hope you don't mind me throwing this info into the mix to see if there are any connections. There is Ryerson (spelling change) family linkage to Vermont and now Missouri that I have learned since joining ancestry.com. My grandfather (formerly Robert Brogan before name change to Carson) was Irish so I figure it couldn't hurt to particpate...

Since I have been unable to locate any parents/siblings of Stephen Rierson/Ryerson born in 1763 I had my husband (who is a direct descendent of Stephen) do an Y-dna test. It came back as S. Irish & Frisian (coastal Holland & Germany). So it looks like 40 % Irish & approx. 60 % Frisian. Hope this helps. Is there anything in your family history regarding how Ryerson is spelled or anything else that might help us all in solving the Stephen Ryerson mystery?

I found that I have the Ryerson Genealogy book already after I rechecked my genealogy items. I cannot find a connection with my husbands Stephen Ryerson line in the book & thats why I had my husband do the dna test. I hope that we can find a connection with that information.

Oct. 12, 2008 update. I have had my husband, Walt Ryerson, from the Stephen Ryerson line, do a dna test. I am waiting for the results which should be coming in this week. Anyone in the male Ryerson line do a dna test yet? If so maybe we can compare the results & further look into dna databases for possible connections. This is an last resort on my part as it seems Stephen Ryerson has been a dead end regarding his parents & siblings for a long time. Maybe this will unblock the dead end that has happened.

My dad's mother was Ruth Carson (Reierson, Ryerson, Rierson) and she had brothers Robert and Ephraim and sisters Anna and Alma.

Is there any chance you might have connection to the Ryerson (Reierson, Rierson) of McFarland Wisconsin (Reinert and Gertrude Reierson would be my great grandparents). I believe that the "Uncle Bob" that I refer to lived in Vermont and had sons Robert and Oliver and 2 or 3 daughters.

I am fairly new to this and not very good at it, so please respond even if there is no conneection, so I know this email posting stuff works

Robert Ryerson from Valley City was the youngest of a large family. Ginny was his wife. I have them all posted on the Barnes County ND board. I'm not aware that this Ryerson family has links to Wisconsin or Vermont. The family came from Stavanger to Chicago (via Quebec) in 1871 then most went on to Barnes County ND sometime before 1880. Several stayed in Chicago. The Patriarch was Ryer Ryerson B Norway in either 1817 or 1827. His wife;sons Kornelius and Robert and three daughters came with him. (Robert B Norway 1852 was likely born Ryer and changed when he came to the USA. His son Robert was born when he was 66. If this raises any questions let me Know. I believe that Ryer may have had other relatives who came to the US but my only lead has not followed up.

Hi, Gizell -

I'm so sorry I never received your response (mjstockwell1 is my daughter; perhaps she failed to send me notice of your response). I just received an email from Monika, did a search for your name, and came across your response to my posting.

Clarence was a brother of my great grandmother Beatrice Irene (Ryerson) Tunnell - she married several times, and I've always known her as Grandma King. She had only one child, my grandmother, Laura Alice (Tunnell) Hankins - she married a second time and I have always known her as Grandma Stone.

I had the great fortune to have an old trunk of stuff from both Grandma King and Grandma Stone passed down to me, so have a lot of information on the family. They were very close to Clarence and there are some pictures and memorabilia concerning Clarence.

Also have quite a bit of info on Simeon Waldo's wife, Isabel Jane Stevens. Her father was born in England; her mother in Scotland.

I am happy to share. I work with Family TreeMaker so can send you a FTW or gedcom file, or would be glad to send printouts if you will send me your address.

Have you been in touch with Pat O'Neill, a grandson of Clarence through Frances? His wife has also worked on the family tree.

Please email me direct at m-sloan@att.net.

Melva M.
Pioneer history of Muskegon County, MI

I have just bought a piece of land in Cedar Creek Twp, Muskegon County, MI. The next major road to the north is Ryerson and the main drag north south in the vicinity is Maple Island (the county line between Newaygo and Musk.) There isn't much of an old town but there is a very old general store just south of the Muskegon River on Maple Island. Muskegon County was lumbered off in the mid 1800s. One of the "lumbar barons" was Martin Ryerson. He also built a sawmill somewhere on Maple Island near the river and I wonder if the general store that is there presently is associated. The woods I now own had definitely been lumbered off but have remained untouched since the 1800s. I am looking for previous owners of land in section 23 of the TWP and any info on Cedar Creek TWP, the Ryersons and the Sweeters (another family for which Sweeter Road was named for - road just north of the river and general store heading west into Cedar Creek TWP.) Please email me direct as I do not know for sure when I'll be back to check in. Kelly

I am sorry, but
the Christian name of the author excapes me, but it
was by a Ryerson.

Regards,

Anne

I don't believe my husband's lineage has a Stephen/Steven;
we haven't seen one -we have not done the dna; don't know if others have. We do know
that this Ryerson family came from Amsterdam and located
in Brooklyn, NY; then to ME and MA.

Regards,
Anne
