Surnames: Saavedra
Hi, I'm a Saavedra from Bolivia. Many years ago I was in Israel where I researched whether our last name might have Jewish or Moorish roots. I was making the assumption based on the double a, which I thought is often found in Arabic and Hebrew. At the museum of the diaspora genealogical archives the closest we could find was Sabador, which the museum people assisting me were sure had NO interrelationship with Saavedra.
I also assumed that "saab" and "adr" might be words or parts of words in Moorish or Arabic, thinking the name might have traveled north from Northern Africa. I also believe the Sefardi Jews were widespread in moorish Spain, and associated one or the other with the origin of Saavedra.
I have abandoned these beliefs ever since I found out Saavedra originated from a place in Spain never occupied by the Moors.
