Connecting Sages in Bloomfield, Ontario, Co, New York; Ontario, Canada; and Ionia Co., Michigan.

I have seen a number of creditable internet postings and ancestral files that connect the Allen Sage family to Ontario, Canada although I would hope others have discovered more primary sources. Building on this data I have a theory to account for the appearance of the Selah Sage family in Ionia Co., Michigan. I would appreciate comments from anyone who can support or disprove my theory.

A Selah Sage was in Bloomfield, Ontario County, New York in 1811 and may have been there as early as 1800.

I believe this Selah to be the child of Allen Sage (1729/30- and Abigail Willard). An Allen Sage is listed in the 1790 Census for Canandaigua, Ontario County, New York 235 and as noted above a grantor of property in the same county in 1801.

Charles H Sage gives four sons and one daughter of Selah (his #385) - Joseph, David Selah, Lyman, Mary. Charles H. Sage, Genealogical Record of the Descendants of David Sage, Charles H. Sage, Pub 1919 Batavia, NY.

Assuming this is the same Selah and using the Jury List data above, it may be assumed that he died ca 1813.

Now jump to the 1840 census records in Metamora, Lapeer, Michigan p 7
Selah Sage 10001 10001 ie one male and female less than 5, one male and female 20-30 years of age. And then to 1850 records in Otisco, Ionia, Michigan p 214 listing:
Selah Sage 36 farmer $100 New York
Mariah “ 35 New York
Benjamin “ 13 W. Canada
Eunice A “ 10 Michigan
Rhoda “ 7 Michigan
Charlotte “ 4 Michigan
James? Sage 1 Michigan
Eunice Domon? 64 Massachusetts
Juliza?? Gardenr?? 22 W Canada
Amelia “ 6/12 Michigan
[note: the on-line copy is quite hard to read.]

The family appears again in 1860 in Keene, Ionia Co., Michigan p 278 with one additional child and again in 1870 in Keene p 492. Selah is widowed and living in Keene in 1880 in the household of his son Benjamin.

It is my theory that this Selah b ca 1813 is the son of Selah (1792 - ca 1813). It seems reasonable that the infant Selah was taken at the death of his father to live with his father’s older brother Allen in Canada where he grew up. He married there, remaining through the birth of his first child, and then immigrated to Leaper Co., Michigan between 1837 and 1840 removing some time in the next decade to Ionia Co., Michigan where many of his cousins then lived and/or moved.

Note: Selah and Mariah’s first child was named Benjamin perhaps after his grandfather and/or uncle Benjamin Sage.

Others have listed the Sage family connection through Brant Co., Ontario to Ionia Co., Michigan. Numerous census records support this migration. However, as I suggest in the beginning, I would like to see definitive records that demonstration that the Allen Sage (1751- ) b Waterbury is the one who moved to Ontario and M1 Christina Brandt and m2 Elizabeth Westbrook.

Nevertheless, I do believe that Selah (ca 1813- aft 1880) is in this branch of the family and that his birth in New York and the birth of his son in W. Canada demonstrates his relationship with the family and supports the above mentioned Allen’s ties to the David Sage family of Middletown, Connecticut.

I welcome you comments in the forum or off line.
