Dear Rita: I hope you still have email. I've been trying to locate my great grandmother ( Madalena Salomone) she came to Monaca, PA (Western PA) about 32 miles from Pittsburgh with her daughter Francesca DiPasquale. Madalena was married to Francesco DiPasquale. I found the ship's manifest of these two women coming through Ellis Island, New York. My Grandfather, Concezio DiSalle met them in New York and by train (I assume got married at St Peter's Italian Catholic Church in downtown Pittsburgh. Both Madalena Salamone (her maiden name) and her daughter Francesca came together and settled in Monaca, PA. Madalena and Francesca came from Bugnara which is south from Sulmona where my Grandfather Concenzio DeSalle was from. I'm trying to locate other DiPasqualles who may be related from New Brighton and around the Beaver County area. Does this sound familiar. Please contact me at Jcafaro@msn.com Thank you

Paula, hadn't seen your post before BUT my Grandfather was Luigi Salomone from Barisciano, Italy. Barisciano is abot 90 miles northeast of Rome in the mountains. I just yesterday found proof of my G grandfather who was Federico and wife Lucia Di Paolo.Salomone is very close to the Jewish name of Solomon and from the computor I learned of a Jewish ghetto outside of Rome. It was dispursed around 1880s or so.As someone told me, The Jewish names were Italianized so Solomon could have become Salomone.????? Haven't figured that one out yet.Hope to heAR from you.

Hi,
Your post is possibly a connection to my extended family and perhaps you know enough background to spot how. The family originated from Borgetto and Toretta.
My great-grandmother's sister was Francesca (Gambino) Salamone. Her husband was Salvatore. They had sons Benedetto, Mario, Andrea, Salvatore, Jr. and a daughter Adelina -- possibly other daughters. Adelina married someone whose last name was Giambrone and had several children.
Mario married Nellie Campise; they had Edward and Salvatore. Benedetto was known as Barney. I don't know what became of Francesca's other sons Andrea and Salvatore.
In the early 1900's, the entire family lived on E. 63rd St. in Manhattan. My father's family group moved to Corona, Queens around 1920 but there is a possiblity they lived around Astoria at some point. My father was Francesca's grand-nephew. Whether or not she lived in Corona I don't know. After Corona, my father's family moved to E. Elmhurst, Queens. Francesca, her husband Salvatore, Mario and his family were there also.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Hello,

I'm looking to find any and all information available on Anthony W. Salamone, born around 1914.

I'm compiling a history of the men who were killed with my great-uncle when their B-17 bomber was shot down on 30 January 1944. Anthony was the flight engineer / top turret gunner on the B-17.

His next-of-kin was given as his mother, Mamie Salamone, 457 12th Street, Niagra Falls, NY.

So far I can find that he was born around 1914 and enlisted out of Buffalo, New York on 18 September 1942.

I'm very new to this family research so any assistance would be greatly appreciated !!

Thanks,

Gene
He may be correct. The conversos were either Iberian Jews or North African Moors. So perhaps the families are of Spanish Moor descent.

Patti,
My family (Salamone) was originally from Aragona, I know this because I visited Cianciana, Sicily in 2005. This is the town registared on the Ellis Island web site, but the family is originally from Aragona Sicily. Our family history, thru Ellis Island, under Vinchenzo Salamone, migrated to Rock Glen NY, his brother Salvatore, from Aragona sponsored him, he had another brother Luchino from Aragona who stayed in Sicily. I thought Salvatote returned to Sicily, but I do not know what happened to him. If so I have many relatives/contacts for you in upstate NY and Sicily.

Angelo Salamone

Dear Noel,

What a pleasant surprise to see your posting. We most likely are related! Sarah Rotolo was my grandfather's, Philip's, sister and she was indeed a Salamone from Aragona. I think a few of the eight siblings are still alive. Angelo is my cousin. I was just looking at the list the other day and would need to look for it. Frances Buscemi was the wife of my great-grandfather, Louis Philip Salamone. Feel free to contact me at mlboscardin@gmail.com.

Mary Lynn

Hello,
I have been researching family history, I stumbled across your post and I believe we are perhaps related. My name is Noel (Natale) Buscemi and both my parents come from Aragona, Sicily. I believe the Frances Buscemi you mentioned is either aunt or sister of my grandfather (Natale Buscemi). You also mentioned Frank Buscemi and he is first cousin to my father, we visited Chicago when I was younger, his and my father's father were brothers. Also, my godfather Angelo Rotolo, who grew up with my father, and is related. He said his mother was a Salamone, I believe she is the Sarah that you mentioned. I would be interested in any family info you may have and also in making contact with some long lost cousins! Thanks, look forward to hearing from you,
Noel

Hi Ellen-- I also came across this posting for Salamone. My Grandmother was Edith Salamone (maiden name). She was one of nine siblings, and she had a brother named Louis. I remember growing up everyone called him Uncle Lou. Legend has it that he would fish with Ted Williams, who played for the Sox, so perhaps Lou lived in Boston at some point. My grnamother also had sisters named Ann, Julia and Josephine. DOes this sound familiar??

Re: Salvatore Salamone Aragona, Sicily

Dear Salvatore,

I know you posted this a couple of years ago but this might help you in your search. My grandfather was Philip Louis Salamone, who was born in Aragona, Sicily. His parents were Frances Buscemi and Louis Philip Salamone. Frances & Louis' other children were Sarah, Dora, Margaret, Pina, Giacommo, Rose (and there may have been one or two others). Rosa and Pina are still living, as I think Margaret is also. Rosa is in N. Babylon, NY (as were Sarah and Dora--All three lived in Brooklyn/Queens for many, many years before moving to LI.), Pina is in Canada, and Margaret is in Sicily. Giacommo moved to Genoa where his two sons, Salvatore & Luigi and daughter, Francesca, now live. As for my grandfather, he immigrated to the US at age 14, lived in Chicago (Frank Buscemi was his guardian) and worked at the leather factory. He then moved to Rockford and returned to the family trade--meat cutter (aka butcher) working for the Cacciatores. From there he moved to Beloit, WI where he opened his own butcher shop which eventually became a supermarket, Salamone's located at 614 East Grand Avenue in Beloit. He married Mary Linarys, who lived in South Beloit, IL and whose parents were Dominick Linarys and Margaret Cacciatore who were from Marsala, Sicily.

I have read that the Moors and Jews both occupied Sicily and that most of the churches were at one time synagogues. At the time of the Spanish Inquisition in the 1400s the Temples were converted to Catholic Churches. The Salamone name is thought to have Jewish origins. I was also told that there were Salamones in Aragona who operated the pasta factory, in addition to the one's who were butchers.

Hope this gives you some historical perspective.

Best,

Mary Lynn
