Re: Sale & Brooke 1700s Essex Co. VA

7 Sept 2009
Cal Sale added this ancestry:
--------
Some comments about Thomas Sale and Mollie Brooke-Sale.

First, Mollie did not marry Thomas Sale until after 1736 when her fathers will was written listing her as Mollie Brooke. This is how it is spelled in Robert Brooke's will. No mention of Thomas Sale. She was a minor at that point giving her a birthdate of between 1715 and 1736.

Second, the information about Mollie Brooke's death date is apparently erroneous. There is a lot of bad information on Familysearch .org. Deed records from 1788 list Thomas Sale and wife.

Third, Will Book 14, p.175, the will of Thomas Sale, he lists his wife, Molly. This is how it is spelled in the will. He lists his son Humphrey and daughters Susanna and Mary. Susanna is married to Alexander Saunders at this time, but they have no children as of the date of the will. Dated 4 December 1789. Probated, 18 June 1790. However, it should be noted that it was the January Court that issued the order for the appraisement of the Estate of Thomas Sale and therefore he died between 4 December and the January court which probably met beginning around the 10th to the 20th of January. I will have to verify this...

Lastly, I have set a birthdate for Thomas Sale of about 1716. This is based on the fact that he and his brother John were the last siblings surviving. John was born on Feb 24, 1717/1718.

More later.

Cal Sale
hi. I sent you a note a little earlier today. I ran across another one of your posts in my search for info on Ferd Taylor. I will forward your message on to my grandmother in AZ. Ferd and (Cora) Effie are her grandparents. Maybe she can remember her aunt Margaret. Margaret's brother, John W. Taylor(1895-1962)married Marie Griffin(1900-1982). They also migrated to the Mesa/Tempe area of AZ sometime prior to 1922. They had two daughters, Madge Catherine Taylor (my grandmother, still living) and Fairy Ann Taylor (deceased), named after John & Margaret's sister (Fairy). I am really interested in getting more info on the parents and grandparents of Ferdinando E. Taylor b.1865 KY.

In a previous post I had stated that I thought that Sale's Church had stood until the new church was built, however; later research revealed that the church had indeed been torn down between 1843 and 1855. The 1855 processioners return has no mention of Sale's Church in it. Previous returns had mentioned the church in relation to other property owners in the area.

Hi Ian, hmm, not sure at the moment if our Sales are related. Our John Wade Clinton Sale was born to (we believe) to John Bernard Sale (b.1779) and Ann (no surname or birth date at present). John Bernard Sale had 3 other children: Mary Ann Sale b 1804; Lydia Sophia Sale b 1806; and Laura Sale born about 1807. John Bernard Sale and his Father and Grandfather were all young choristers who became lay vicars at St. George's Chapel Windsor, Westminster Abbbey, and the Chapel Royal. John Bernard Sale was also an organist at the Chapel Royal. John Bernard also became the Musical Instructor to the Princess Victoria in 1826. So John Wade's father, grandfather and great grandfather all had strong connections with the church. His grandfather John Sale was also an Almoner and master of choristers at St. Paul's Cathedral and his funeral took place at St. Paul's. They were a very musical family! But having said all that, until we can find for sure our John Wade Clinton Sale's birth record, we are not sure. But still maybe there is some connection with your Sales through a brother, as early this year we found another child that was missing from the family tree.

I'll pass all this information onto my brother and sister-in-law who are researching the tree as well, I'm sure my brother who has also put messages on the Ancestry Site (he is a Clinton) will have had these message alerts from you through ancestry.

Thanks again for replying, I will let you know how our research is going and keep in touch, Thanks.

Hi - James and his household lived in Hammersmith for many years - Weiltje Road. He reached the age of 82, dying in 1919; not sure about Frances (Reeve), but she was still alive in 1911; James was born in Chelsea 1836, son of John James Sale and Mary Eliza Beamish; John was born in Stepney, but lived for some time in Ealing; he was the son of John Sale and Mary Barden, about whom I know almost nothing; James' children were Fanny, Helen, James,Kate, Alice, Edith and Harold; James had a sister Eliza Eleanor who married a John Beamish.
Not a very fertile family - some of the women were spinsters, the younger James went to Melbourne in 1910; Harold had 2 marriages, one child by each - I'm a descendant from his second effort, and like the younger James, also in Australia - but no idea what happened to the younger James.

regards

Ian

Hi Ian. Yes. We are trying to find the birthplace and date of birth of our Great Grandfather John Wade Clinton Sale, born we believe between 1804-1811, he is the son (we believe) of John Bernard Sale and Ann. John Wade married a Caroline Rogers in 1851, unfortunately he dropped the name of Sale at some point in time and called himself John Wade Clinton, and his children were all given the Clinton surname. We know that his sisters were baptised in Middlesex and are in the process of looking at all the parish records in London Middlesex along with Census records, there isn't a mention of a James Christopher Sale on the records we have so far but he could be a cousin or a member of the Sale family we have'nt unearthed yet. Or maybe he was married twice. Do you know if Frances Sale - James' wife's death date?

Thanks for getting back - and please keep in touch. Because this is all proving very interesting.

Hi - I noticed that you are doing something of a one name study of Sale. My forebears lived in Middlesex, at least for a while. James Christopher Sale (b 31/5/1836, son of John Sale) and wife Frances (nee Reeve) lived in Brentford, then Hammersmith. A number of children - youngest was Harold, my PGF, who married Maud Burton Norwood, one daughter Kathleen in 1906; he then married (or partnered) again c 1920 to Lilian. Have not, to date, been able to find out what happened to Maud or Kathleen.
An older brother of Harold, James Christopher, left England 1910 to go to Melbourne - not sure what happened to him then.
Happy to provide more info

I have a record of your grandmother Ethel Violet SALE's birth being registered in December quarter of 1907 indicating a birth date of 20 November 1907 (not 1908) in your tree.
I have a Tom Sale marrying an Alice WATKINS in St Mary Magdalene Church at Holloway in Islington on 21 May 1899; he 26 a Labourer of 5 Chapman's Cottages Willesden; she 24 of 29 Ringcroft Street the daughter of Edmund Evered WATKINS.
This Tom I think died at 71a Southfields Road Chiswick on 18 JUNE 1951 and Alice died in Hastings in March quarter 1963 (4 January )
Tom was born in Barrow but to Thomas and Mary Ann (WISEMAN) and is a different individaul to the Frederick Thomas born in 1877 to Arthur James and Maria (CRACK)

As far as I know they had three daughters and 1 son.
1 Alice Margaret b 1899 married Frederick YELLAND in Brentford RD Jun qtr 1928
2 Your grandmother Ethel Violet
3 Florence Mary b 1910 married a Mr HARRIS in Brentford RD Sep qtr 1925
4 Thomas E b 1914 married Ivy E LITTLE in Brentford RD Sep qtr 1942

Is this the same family as yours please. I appreciate you are doing the BALL line mainly but confirmation, one way or the other, would help me greatly.

Thank you

Hello Patrick - My Grandmother was Selina Sale and she had brothers called Dick (Richard) and Bob (Robert) Her mother was born Selina Shellard who married John Sale and subsequently married John Parsons. I believe there was a connection with Milwaulkee as my grandmother used to get the most beautiful Christmas cards from the USA in the 1950's when I was a kid. I never established, or even thought about, a connection at that age.
We lived in Bristol in a suburb called Shirehampton. My grandmother, Selina, had sisters called Nellie and Daisy. I am the daughter of one of Selina's daughters - Frances.
I hope this is of help to you - after such a long time.
With very best wishes - Ros Boulden (Email - Rboulden @aol.com

Remember, there are two Granville Sale's. One is Granville Thomas Sale the other is Granville S. Sale. Both were born to Benjamin Sale's. Granville S. Sale was the son of Benjamin Sale and Mary Lane. Granville Thomas Sale was the son of Benjamin Sale and a Frances J. LNU.

The irony is that Benjamin Sale who married Frances was the grand nephew of Benjamin and Mary Sale.

Benjamin who married Frances was the son of James and Alice Sale. Both James and Alice were niece and nephew of Benjamin. Alice being the daughter of John Sale and James was probably the son of Thomas Sale, Jr.. Benjamin, John and Thomas all were the sons of Thomas and Clara Sale.

James Sale and Alice, along with her siblings came to live with Benjamin in 1808 in Amherst County after John Sale died in 1807 in Caroline County and Thomas had also apparently died between 1798-1808. James and Alice were married in 1808 in Amherst County. James and Alice's first child was named Benjamin, probably to honor of there uncle who took them in.

Ganville Thomas Sale would rise to the rank of Lieutenant in the Civil War, while Granville S. Sale, who was a private would desert not once, but twice during the Civil War. We do know however, where Ganville S. Sale is buried. His grave is located off Route 635 and Wares Gap Road, Route 636, in Amherst County, Virginia. He was born Feb. 4, 1832 and died Sept. 9th, 1904. Granvile's father, Benjamin Franklin Sale was born 1776 in Caroline County and died November 9, 1859 in Amherst County, Virginia.

Granville S. Sale married first, Mary Frances Ann Ware on December 21, 1853 and Susan F. Morgan on December 15, 1864 in Amherst County Virginia.

Granville Thomas Sale moved to Halifax County Virginia and died there is August 26, 1905. Benjamin, whose son was Granville Thomas Sale was born 1813 in Amherst County and died 1893 in Amherst County, Virginia.

I invite comment.

Hi, Our family are researching Sales in England. We have a John Sale born 1666 in Nottingham his daughter was Elizabeth Sale born in 1692 Nottingham, this John Sale moved to Ireland with his daughter at some point as he was a Registrar in Dublin and Elizabeth married Richard Colley Wesley, their son was Garret Wesley, first Earl of Mornington, whose son Arthur Wellesley was The Duke of Wellington. Our Sales were from Lincolnshire, and London Westminster, working as Lay Vicars and Almoners and organists, at Lincolnshire Cathedral, Westminster Cathedral, Windsor - Royal Chapel and St. Paul's Cathedral, from 1766-67 onwards, apart from John Wade Clinton Sale who was born in 1811 and became an actor. Don't know if this ties up with any of your Sales

PS: I don't think that was very clear. I am off the Daniel Morgan line, and Susan F. Morgan was his daughter. Daniel had a son John Henry Morgan, and John's daughter, Cornelia Morgan (Ramsey), was my Great Aunt Mattie's mother. I have a few photos of John Henry Morgan and his wife, if you would be interested in a scan of that.

Thanks so very much for the information. I am the Morgan line off Susan F. Morgan. There is one Census where Daniel Morgan is living with Susan and her husband Granville Sale. That is where I began, and I did see the pension records, but couldn't read them very well. I am searching for Daniel Morgan's parents. If you would like what I have on the Morgan line, feel free to ask. My Great Aunt Mattie Ramsey worked for years on the family history I have, when there were no computers to help. Thank you again, and if I didn't have something correct on what I posted, let me know.
Gayle
Cal- First, my connection. One of my maternal grandmothers is Mary Ellen Campbell. She is D/O George Washington Campbell, S/O John Sale Campbell, S/O Elizabeth Sale and Wiley Campbell.Elizabeth Sale is D/O John Sale. John
Sale Campbell migrated to KY in 1818, but maintained contact with his family in the Amherst Co., VA, area and , in fact, the two branches maintained some contact into the early 1950s at which time as a high school student, I visited with a distant Campbell cousin in VA with my parents. This individual was living on or near the original Campbell land. It was my impression that this land was part of the original Crown grant to John Sale for his colonial service. We were shown a grave on the land purported to be that of John Sale. This individual gave me the information from the inscription in the Sale bible to which you refer. I do not recall for sure, but I believe it was typed and was not a certified or a photo copy, but if it would be helpful, I can try to find find it in my "basement files". It started with: "John, son of Anthony Sale by Anne, his wife...", and, later,"Elizabeth, daughter of John Sale and Frances his wife, was born on Saturday, February 7th, 1778." At that time I was told that the bible was in the possession of Nell Sandridge, but we did not meet her. This Campbell cousin also gave me a copy of a compendium of Sale family information collected by a John W. Sale of Fort Wayne, IN in 1905.This describes John Sale's Colonial service and Revolutionay war sevice, some Sales on opposite sides in the Civil War and the family of Wiley Campbell and Elizabeth Sale in some detail.John Sale was one of my mother's supplementary DAR lines.

This would indicate that Permelia is of the immediate Sale line, but I cannot find her parents. Any help? M B Johnson

Paul,

It would be great if you could find that information. You are right, Lewis Campbell inherited the original Sale land grant. As far as the grave goes, if it was John Sale's grave that would be something new that I haven't heard about. The grave of Cornelius Sale, his son, is supposed to be on the farm as well. That may be the grave you saw. However, they should all be buried in the same family graveyard, but no one to my knowledge has seen that grave or graveyard in recent year. It may have been destroyed.

I just yesterday posted another message about the true identity of Anthony Sale's wife. Anne. She was Anne Goode, daughter of John Goode and Anne Jones.

Thanks for the help. My email is kmikes1066@aol.com

Does anyone have the maiden name of Sarah (Sally) Rennolds, who was the first wife of Anthony Sale, son of Anthony, son of Cornelius Sale? This was the Anthony who moved to Louisville, Kentucky in 1785. Sarah married first William Rennolds of Caroline County, Virginia.

Anthony's other wives were Agnes Hord and Mary Stewart. The Alexander history stated he was married three times and had nineteen children, which is correct if you and in all of the step children.

Anthony Sale Married Ann Goode, NOT Ann Bristow

I wanted to post this today to try and put a stop to those who continue to perpetuate the erroneous information that Anthony Sale married Ann Bristow. The Seal and Sale families are two separate families who have, on occasion, been confused in court records in Essex, Richmond and Caroline Counties in Virginia. And here is the proof.

1742, March 15, Anthony Sale is administrator of the estate of John Goode in Essex County, Virginia.

1743, March 30, Anthony Sale and Thomas Parker are listed as administrators of the estate of John Goode on the appraisal of the estate by Elias Newton, William Taylor and Samuel Davis. Returned and recorded 17 May 1743.

1743, May 17, the division of the estate of John Goode as follows: Wife, Ann Jones-Goode to have received one third of the estate of John Goode. Thomas Parker, who is known to have married a daughter of John Goode, either a Sarah or Mildred Goode, also received one third of the estate. Anthony Sale, administrator, to receive the other third of the estate.

Also, Thomas Parker was made guardian of his son, Robert, this indicating this Sarah or Mildred was dead by May 1743.

1767, October 5, Robert Parker, (son of Thomas), and Robert Sale, (son of Anthony), enter into an agreement whereby the division of the estate of John Goode, deceased some years age, possessed of sundry slaves and left a widow, (Ann Jones-Goode)(who is since dead), and two daughters, (who are also dead), vitz: Ann Sale of whom the said Robert Sale is son and heir at law. Also, stating that Robert Parker is son and heir at law, (implying he is the heir of Thomas Parker and Sarah or Mildred Goode). Robert Parker to get the slaves named Milley, Sam, Patty, Jenny and Pheobe. Robert Sale to get George, Amy, Alice, Betty, Winny, Janney, and Andrew.

This shows that Anthony Sale Married Ann Goode, NOT Ann Bristow, who married Anthony Seal.

Anthony Sale had died by September, 1763, his eldest son, Robert, was summoned to the Courthouse to give testimony about the death and will in the month. He died in Caroline County after living his entire life in Essex County. This probably due to a boundary change between Essex, Caroline and King and Queen in 1762, which probably moved Anthony into Caroline County near Daniel's Mill, now White's Mill. However, Anthony deeded land to his son, Leonard on October 17, 1761 in Essex County, which could also indicate that he sold his land and moved in with other family members in Caroline County. Additional research will have to be done on this issue. Of course the will of Anthony has been lost due to the destruction of court records in Caroline County in the last year of the Civil War. His will was admitted to the court record in May 1784, being omitted from the record in 1763, and is lost to history.

Bible Record of John and Frances Sale, of Caroline and Amherst, Virginia

Does anyone have a copy of the Campbell/Sale bible record that lists the family of John and Frances Sale back to Anthony and Ann Sale? This bible was last known to be in the possession of Nellie Campbell-Sandidge of Amherst, Virginia. She was married to Forrest Sandidge. She died in 1958.

Cal Sale

Three corrections need to be made to this post. First, Thomas Parker did marry Sarah Goode. There was another Thomas Parker in the county that married a Mildred LNU. Second, Anthony was not moved into Caroline due to the boundry change in 1762. He evidently moved there of his on accord between 1760 and 1763 when he died. Lastly, Anthony deeded a slave named, London, to his son Leonard in 1761, not land.

Sharon,

Sarah Clementine Sale was my great-grandmother. She married Charles Monroe Patton. Please let me know if this is the same Sarah Sale you are researching. If so, I have a lot of information I would be happy to share.

Thanks,
Rhonda Brown
