Absalom HUST, b. 1774, VA, was a brother of John HURST, b. ca. 1765, VA

I want to post and say that I am a Hurst/Hust decendant. The name started out as Hurst. I believe that Catherine's father Absolum was a brother to my John Hurst. John died in Henderson County, Kentucky his will 1840 lists his last name as Hust. His decendants still living in Henderson County, Kentucky go by Hust. Many records in my family have Hurst, Hust or Husk on them. I believe that there were at least three brothers my John, Absolum and Valentine "Felty". I believe that your Absolum is listed in the 1820 census, Kentucky as Absolum Hurst on next page is Valentine Hurst. Valentine stayed in Daviess County and his decendants go by Husk. This Absolum was only there for the 1820 census then is gone. My John mentions in his will a son Absolum and a son Valentine "Felty". John was born about 1765 in Virginia, moved to Tennessee as some of his children were born there and then moves to Henderson County, Kentucky about 1805. After first wife died he moves back to Ten. then back to Kentucky. His decendants went to Ten., Arkansas, Missouri and some stayed in Henderson County, Ky. Right now a Hust still living in Henderson and is 82 is participating in the Hurst/Hust/Husk Y-DNA project. Soon we will have the results and hopefully our Hust family matches one of the Hurst families in the study. I hope that a male decendant of Absolum with the last name still Hust comes forward and gets tested. I am sure his Y-DNA will match ours. I am also sure that Absolum is a brother to my John. When looking for records I would check Hurst, Hust or Husk. In John's will he puts his mark on there and I don't think he could read or write. The name Hurst at least in our family is pronounced Hust so it makes sense why these folks sometimes went with Husk or Hust. The Hust and Husk message boards have few postings but go to the Hurst board and you will see. John's children are as follows: Isaac, Mary, Nancy, Jemima, Elizabeth, Sarah (Sally), James, William, Catherine, Absolum, Valentine "Felty", and George W.

Absalom, b. 1774, s/o James HURST per y-DNA test results

I posted a message elsewhere but will post a little here. The name was Hurst first. I am a decendant of Absalom Hust's brother John Hust who died in Henderson County, Kentucky 1841. I not only have documents proving the name has been spelled Hurst/Hust and Husk on many documents I also have 2 decendants one from John and one from his brother other brother Valentine who took DNA tests that proved the lines were related and in fact were Hurst's. The two men were from different brothers one had the last name Husk one Hust. Anyway I have many documents with Absalom in them deeds tax records etc. He is listed as Hurst on some Hust on some and Husk on some. Absalom's dad was James Hurst/Hust/Husk. Anyway sorry to upset anyone but the truth is the truth the name was Hurst first and I can prove it. Anyone interested in the documents that I have or DNA test results please e-mail me and I will gladly share what I have. My hope is that a decendant of Absalom Hust who still has the last name Hust (has to be a male) will come forth and be tested. It is simple they mail a kit to your home and you mail it back. The test will already confirm what years of research has already told me that Absalom Hust born 1774 is a brother to my John Hurst/Husk/Hust.

Thank you,
Janet Dryer
Dryer7171@aol.com

Thank you for this information. We have been trying for many years to get information on Catherine's family. We too had been tripped up by looking for Hearst instead of Hust. Do you have any information further back on Catherine and her brother William? I have their father as Absalom Hust, born about 1774 in VA or KY, died 1850 - 1852 in Wiconda Township, Davis County, IA. Any help will be much appreciated. And again, thanks for sharing this information about the correct name of Hust. We need more people like you.

A word of advice. If any Saling researchers are having difficulty in finding more about Catherine who married Jefferson Saling on 27 April 1828 don't look for the name Hearst. Catherine's name was Hust. Her brother was William Hust who married Elizabeth Saling on 27 April 1828. Double wedding. I am a descendant of William Hust via Dea Richmond Hust.

Hi Sally,

You're really inspiring me to finally start unpacking the boxes with all family records, notes, pictures, etc. And, you know how usually if you have 10 boxes, whatever you're looking for is always in the 10th box? Yet, whenever you raise a question and I know I have something with the answer on it, I seem to be able to pull it out of a box without much digging! I like that!

I have a piece of paper with a lot of notes about the Webb family but I think the first page with the resource information is missing. This looks like the 2nd page but it has specifics. And for the most part, it matches what you said. Here's a brief summary (or what I can read of my own handwriting!)

1. Mormon Records for Bristol, England, Henry Webb with John Stoker (possible sponsor?)
2. Passenger lists for ships leaving Liverpol, England and arriving (or stopping) at New Orleans. Possibly: 23 April 1850
3. Mormon passengers on a ship "James Parnell"
Possibly: Henry Webb (tailor) Ann, Zipporah, Bernicia, Paloma

Alice Zipporah Webb may have been a lady-in-waiting- to Queen Victoria. Royal court very particular about activities of its ladies. Conversion to Mormonism was "forbidden"

One thing I didn't do was check for the Webb family in the 1860 Utah census. However, by 1860 Alice would have been in or near Washington.

Regarding Uncle Perry, most of what I know about him comes from my Aunt Jessie. She knew him and has told me many stories about driving up to Sonoma County for a visit. Yes, Nicholas did have a brother named Oliver Hazzard Perry. During that period the custom was to name the first born son after the father. But, in case you may not know, Nicholas Vance was married once before Alice (3 wives total!) and already had a son named Nicholas Vance, Jr. And that's another story!

Oliver Henry Perry Sheffer was born 23 August 1856, Knights Landing, CA. He married Lora Ann Rowe, 31 December 1884 in Davisville (now Davis), CA. They eventually settled in Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, CA. Perry and Lora had 8 children, 7 girls and 1 boy. The daughters were Lottie, Hattie, Lula, Mary Lydia, Marjorie, Sylvia, and Thelma. My grandfather was born the same year as Marjorie and they, with Sylvia, were quite close. I don't know the name of the boy although I'm sure it's here somewhere. He died as an infant. Uncle Perry died 22 February 1931, Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, CA and is buried in the Davis Cemetery, Davis CA. I've been to the cemetery but was unable to locate the graves. I wasn't surprised given that unmarked graves seem to be common in the family. My great great grandparents and great-uncle do not have markers either! Also, it seems the Davis cemetery was relocated from somewhere. It's just a feeling one gets after tramping and searching through many, many cemeteries!

I don't know if Glen and/or Jesse Saling ever lived in California. The family moved to Sunnyvale around 1919 and Glen visited often. Cynthia was a frequent visitor in Sunnyvale but we know she lived in Washington, so that's no help!

I've been wanting to visit Washington for several years now. Just can't seem to get up that way! The family movements are really rather clear. Although Nicholas had a penchant for travel, he seemed to pick a spot and call it home. He did occasionally visit Uncle Perry in Santa Rosa. The hardest part is keeping track of all his wives and children. I'm probably half related to half the population of Washington state! Who knows, I'm not to that part yet!

Well, I hope this helped. But as you know the answer to genealogical questions only produce more questions, or so I've learned!

Until Next Time,
Patrick...

Hello Sally,

Good to hear from you again! Sounds like you've been
busy!

I don't know if this makes a difference, but Nicholas
and Alice lived in Port Townsend, Jefferson County. And I believe
that's where Mattie (Dora?) was born and died. She was born
right after my Great Grandfather, John Franklin (Frank) Sheffer.
Also, I have no idea where the divorce took place. Perhaps she just left
and said she was divorced!
Yet, wouldn't these records be in the state archives?

As for Jesse and Alice, I just recently got my census
prinouts out of storage and haven'y much time to review
them again. I do recall some names, ages, etc. that didn't quite
make sense. I'll have to examine them again to refresh.

I did know about Jesse Jackson and Glen Hugh. My aunt actually
knew Glen. He came to visit them in Sunnyvale many times. I even
have a (one) picture of him (although not a clear one!)

And I did have some information, although vauge, about Henry and
Ann Webb. But how many people have you heard of with the name Zipporah?
So that must be the family. Does the record show the port of
entry? Is it New Orleans?

You're information sounds very good. Oh, but more questions,
what a surprise!

Keep me posted!

Patrick...
pacorboff@surfree.com

This has been the most elusive person in my family research!
Alice Saling is my gg grandmother. She was married (and then
divorced!) my gg grandfather, Nicholas Vance Sheffer. For
Nicholas, Alice was wife 2 of 3. In this line of the Sheffer
family I come from their 3rd child, John Franklin Sheffer.

All I really know is Alice came from England with one of the
Mormon missions returning after the Saints vacated England.
There is documentation of their marriage in the LDS archives.
Nicholas liked adventure and left his wife at various locations
along the way to Washington state! She caught up with him at
Port Townsend, WA. She got tired of sitting around always
waiting for him to return and divorced. This had to have
been after 1865, that's when John Franklin was born. There was
one more child after John but she died as a young child. In one
of the Oregon census' John is shown along with his sister, Cynthia,
living in Weston, Umatilla Co., OR.

I lose Alice after that census.

A few years ago, I was given some pictures by a cousin
but they aren't labled. The only writing shows a couple
of the pictures were taken in Weston and others in
Umatilla Co. I've been looking for someone who might
help ID them, nothing yet!

So...put me in the loop for information on Alice jesse Saling!

Patrick...
pacorboff@surfree.com

Greetings, cousin! Good to see you online again. I have some information and non-information about our mutual ancestors which may be of interest.

I have been unable to find divorce records for N.V. Sheffer and Alice in WA territory or Thurston Co. (Olympia) court records. I also found no death records for Mattie or Goldie, the Sheffer infant, in Thurston Co.

However, I have learned that Jesse Saling and Alice had four children.
1. Lucinda Isobel Saling b. 18 July 1870, Walla Walla, WA.
m. 24 Dec. 1886 Frank Albert Shelton, Heppner, OR.
2. Jesse Jackson Saling b. 6 Nov. 1873, Weston, Umitilla, OR.
3. Cora May Saling b. 1 May 1875, Weston, Umatilla, OR
m. 1894 Gay Clark, 4 children, d. 30 Aug 1963, Camas, Clark, WA.
4. Glen Hugh Saling b. 23 Sept 1878, Weston, Umatilla, OR

1880 Census, Weston, OR lists in Saling household, Jesse (45, b. MO), Alice (40, Frank J. (17), Lucinda (10), Jesse J.(8), Cora I.(6), Glen H.(3).

I have the new Mormon Immigration Index - Individuals CD. It lists 99 people named WEBB. The most likely family is that of Henry Webb b. 1808, Ann b. 1808, Zeporah b. 1834, Burnice b. 1839, and Salome b. 1844. The problem is Alice's birthdate. In the 1860 Port Townsend census she is listed as 24, thus born 1836 - and her age on the 1880 census doesn't quite match either.

The IGI shows 4 Henry Webbs in England marrying Anns between 1832 and 1834. Although N.V. and Alice married in SLC 22 July 1855, I could find no Henry/Ann in the 1860 census.

So this is where I've been and what I've found and not found since our last messages. If other descendants or researchers of Alice Webb Sheffer Saling have information about her birthplace in England and/or her parents, I hope they will fill us in.

Sally

It was great to find your response. Yes, that is the family I'm searching. Do you have details of their life, their children, when and where they are buried? Alice is my gggmother thru one of her Sheffer children and I have only recently learned that she remarried and had a second family. Any further information will be much appreciated. Thanks,

Hello Patrick,

Thank you for the quick response. After sending my last message I realized I should have included more information about the immigration of the Webb family. They sailed from Liverpool, England on the ship James Pennell on 2 Oct 1850 and arrived in New Orleans, LA 23 Nov 1860. (How did you know about the New Orleans port of entry?)
Another researcher tells me this is the correct family. Now that we know Alice's father is Henry it raises at least one other question - about the name of Uncle Perry. You called him Oliver Henry Perry in one of your messages but I assumed his name was Oliver Hazzard Perry after his uncle, the brother of Nicholas Vance. Again, how did you know that? I have learned that Perry settled in CA, married and had at least one daughter. Do you know his death date and place? Also did Glen Hugh or Jesse Jackson Saling settle in CA or did they just visit?

Regarding my search for the divorce and death records, I started in Olympia because our other cousin who shared information about a year ago thought it was the place. She also mentioned Nicholas and Alice lived in Dungeness which is in Jefferson County on a little finger of land on the northern coast of the Olympic Peninsula, so that is my second choice. I've had "intentions" for getting there all summer but haven't made it yet.

I've also heard the infant's name is Dorah Matilda for her grandmother Matilda (Davis?) Sheffer.

Will get back to you when I know something more.
A Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

Sally

Jacob and Lavina Saling, from Missouri to Oregon

Dear Salings,

I was born Frederick Douglas Saling. My Saling path looks like this (with a few errors doubtless along the way, my apologies):

Frederick Douglas Saling (7 Oct 1966) married to Beverly Ann Marshall (14 Sep 1967)
Frederick Elwin Saling, Jr. (6 Jun 1944) and Barbara Ann Baldwin (5 Jun 1948)
Frederick Elwin Saling, Sr. (3 Sep 1917) and Anna Mae Miller (22 Feb 1921)
Lester Elwin Saling (3 Apr 1892) and Harriett Wheeler (31 Dec 1892)
Thomas Franklin Saling (9 Feb 1857) and Laura Augusta Campbell (18 Feb 1867)
Jacob Saling (1828 or 1830 or Sep 1833) and Lavina D. Saling (24 Mar 1836)
George Saling (1800 or 1809) and Sarah A. Snow (ca. 1800)
William Saling (1779) and Molly Gage (ca. 1779)
George Adam Saling (9 Feb 1735/6) and Hannah ? (1749)
Johan Pieter Saling (1710) and Ann Marie Vollmer (?)

My concern is about the riddle of Lavina's Jacob Saling. She is George's daughter and Thomas's mother, so where does he come from? I have little on his origins (three conflicting dates and a birthplace of somewhere in Missouri) and nothing on his parents, and he abandons her and seems to disappear from history after fathering five children with her. One site suggests he dies some time after 1900, probably in California, though no source is given for this information.

Unless he adopted her family name, which would have been an extremely unusual move for that era, I have to assume he was a cousin, though one online genealogy erroneously (I hope) lists him as her brother. There are Jacobs gallore throughout the Saling tree, but none who seem to fit the profile.

Looking at the dates for the six Saling crossings I know about, I find a gap between Johan Pieter Saling's crossing in 1733 (or is it 1728 or 9) and Valentine Saling's somewhere between 1831 and 1839. I could well be missing one or more Saling crossings in there, but if not it suggests that this Jacob Saling is another descendant of the Johan Pieter line. I have plenty of blind spots in my tree of his descendants, so it's entirely possible.

Our family has a romantic notion that this Jacob Saling was some kind of Native American (Cherokee?) who adopted the Saling name while he lived among the whites. I suppose it is possible, but it smells of romanticism to me, especially since we have no concrete family stories to that effect; these stories lack the clarity of true family traditions and feel more like rationalizations. I suspect it is far more likely to have been a marriage between cousins, but I have so far been unable to pin down his ancestry.

This is also of interest to me because Lavina and Jacob left Missouri and moved out west, through Walla Walla to Oregon, which brought our branch of the family to the Pacific Northwest where we've lived for generations. I will never really have a chance of knowing why they did this if I cannot better come to understand who they both were.

Can anyone on the list help?

Sincerely yours,
Rick (Frederick Douglas Saling Marshall)

PS: I do not know which of the several Saling genealogy forums should be considered the default, so I am cross-posting. Please let me know if I should do otherwise.
Hi Rick I was just surfing for fun and came across your post. I called my dad and come to find out you and I are related. I dont have time right now to tell you what I know, but if you get this (since your post was so long ago) write me back and I will tell you what I know then. Oh just so you know my dad is True J. Saling son of Elwin Saling, son of True A. Saling son of Thomas Saling. If that made sense ha ha

Death date for Elizabeth SALING who md. William HUST?
Before I make a drastic change in my tree I need to know, with a degree of certainty, when Elizabeth died. Or any information regarding these two. Ancestry.com has a marriage certificate (sort of). The interpreter sees the actual 27 April as 7 April if anyone is interested. If she died before 1847, when my ancestor Melvina was born, then my tree is wrong, and her mother is Mary Ann Packwood! Thanks for any help!

Any photos of Alice Z. WEBB & Nicholas SHEFFER family?

Hi Patrick,
I've been doing a lot of research on the Sheffer family. I wonder if you might have any pictures of Alice Zipporah Webb or other Sheffer family photos which you could possibly email to me. Nicholas Vance Sheffer was my GGG Grandfather. I've recently been in touch with Sally Harris and she got me inspired to more research. Hope to hear from you soon.

John

I am working on my geneology and my records indicate a possible transpostion error on Peter's date of death, I think it should be 1857 not 1785.

I would like to review my records with those you have developed.

My great-grandmother was Anna Saling Adkins who lived in North and Eastern Oregon (Wasco Morrow counties), born approx. 1870 and death record still not found. Divorce records (1898) mention a relative Lillie Saling. Suspect she was related to Umatilla Salings and perhaps Idaho and S.E. Washington Salings. Any info or insight would be appreciated. email: atmack@aol.com Have photo from 1905-10 of her with man named "Case Fuqua". Thanks.
