My grandmother, Elizabeth Salter, was born in Skibbereen in the 1880's. Her mother's name was Nora Walsh I believe and her father and brother I believe were names Thomas. I know that Richard was also the name of one of her brothers perhaps. She moved to Boston at a young age and lived there until she met my grandfather, Matthew Quinn, in the Bronx,NY on a weekend visit. She moved to NY and had my father, John Richard Quinn. My younger brother's middle name is Thomas after her father or brother. I know that one of her brother's name was Thomas. She supposedly had 14 or so siblings. I visited the farm/homestead in 1990 and I believe the house overlooks Roaring Bay or some body of water by that type of name.

please contact me back if any of this sounds familiar. I know that Richard Salter, my grandmother's nephew, still lived in the area and owned the property at the time of my visit, though I didn't have time to visit. One of her sister's married into the Ryan family and there are many of them in that area as well.

Judy - we have to have a connection somewhere along the line. I have Salters, O'Briens and Hegartys from the same area of Lisheen and Kilkilleen. In fact, I have relatives with all three surnames who still live there.

Please contact me offline at barbwalsh49 so that we can determine our connection.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
Barbara in St. Louis, Missouri

Hi,

Thanks for the info. but I don't see a connection with the names sad to say. However, if you haven't done so already try this website: http://www.westcorkgenealogy.com/
It's run by Bill Fahy in the USA, and is a great source of information on West Cork families. His brother Frank lives in Skibbereen and we know each other as we are second cousins. You may know him better as Frank Fahy the former officer i/c of Skibbereen Fire Service (retired), and a town councillor.

I believe the owner of the castle in Castletownshend is a SALTER-TOWNSEND, but I've no idea if there is a family connection.

Kind regards, Mike.

Yes, order the marriage certificate as that will give you John's age (hopefully it won't just say "of full age") and his father's name and occupation, which all helps to narrow it down.
Good luck in your search.

Rosemarie

I am not sure about the specific area of Queens. But my grandfather Henry C. Salter Sr. was married to my grand step mother for many yeras and her name is Daisy. From my understanding she is still in Queens but is suffering from alzheimers. I have a picture of Deborah from when she graduated from some type of trade school but it was explained to me it was nursing school. My mother says some of my family has the S on the last name and some do not. She advised those who migrated North dropped the S. I know my grandfather had a brother or cousin named Jessie and they called him Lightning. The name Sonny rings a bell but I cannot be sure. Were there a set of twins in your family a boy and girl...the boy was named Lance?

Hello everybody,

OK, so I just begun trying to map my Family Tree (how addictive is it btw!).

My name is Lee SALTER b 08-Dec-1972.
My Father was Harold George SALTER b 23-Apr-1939 d 30-Mar-1990.
My Mother is Valerie Marie PRIOR b 27-May-1946.

Unfortunately, I'm not in contact with my father's side of the family and never knew my Grandparents from my fathers side.

I have found out that my Grandmothers name was Louisa OVERFIELD and that she married a John SALTER in 1921.

However, I've not been able to narrow down which John SALTER this could be (there are about 3 possibilities).

Can anybody offer any advice in how I should proceed next? Will ordering the marriage certificate of John and Louisa help?

Thanks in advance.

James Albert Salter is my mother's brother. The info that you gave on your query is correct according to my records.

I looked thru all of the McLennan county marriage books at the court house when I first started family research, but never found reference to Uncle Jim's marriage. My info comes from a bible owned by Edna Salter Hunt (sister of James Salter).

What is your relationship to him/Margaret Dralle?
His mother's maiden name is COE.

Hello Greg,
I was in Edgefield last weekend and found some info on John and Benjamin Salter. In reading your entry can you tell me how you determined that Benjamin and John were Jame's brothers? The earliest Salter I can find in the Edgefield District was a John Salter who was married to a "Dorcas or "Darkes", it was spelled both ways. Do you know who James' mother was? I feel strongly that John was either James' older brother or father. Also, there are many Salters in Ward, SC. I believe that John Salter Sr. was the only Salter who remained in SC when James and the Partins migrated through Georgia to Alabama. Hope you can
help. I can share the research I have done.
My grandfather created a fairly comprehensive family tree for us at one point, but saved it to a Mac that is, relatively speaking, older than dirt. I am taking up the torch because it looks like those files may never be recovered.

I will post with more details soon, but if those names ring anyone's bells, please contact me. Fanny May married a Wilkins and had several children though only 2 survived into adulthood. She was institutionalized in the mid to late 1930's for dementia and later passed away. Her father was A.G.B. Salter, which I can only assume stands for, in part Archibald.

My efforts in this arena are tangentially connected to Kevin Duffus and his work in North Carolina with the remains of Edward Salter.

Please contact me at zodiac_gypsy@hotmail.com if you have any information that could lead me backwards towards the Sr. Edward Salter, or from him downwards to my own family. thank you.

Hi there,
All my Porter family come from Wiltshire, and I do have a Lot Porter in the family.
He was my g-g-grandfather's brother (I think!). They were from the Atworth (Bradford) area and the descendants lived there until the late 1800's when they moved to Bristol.
I have a diary that my g-grandfather wrote before he died in the mid 1950's that gives some information. One titbit that may help us tie in is that he knew his father had a brother who emigrated to the US. He had written to the family asking them to join him in the US, but the brother (Samuel) had a family and didn't want to take the chance. In the diary, it mentions what the brother's business was in the US, but have forgotten at the moment.
Think we can make a match?

Hi there,
I'm about 80km outside of Toronto - in Bradford, Ontario.
If you'd like to contact me at kayped at rogers.com, I'll give you the excerpt of the diary I mention, and how far back I can go. I've actually just got access to Parish records and have gone back another couple of generations - but only my direct line so far. The branches are always the problem!
I was in Great Somerford a few years back doing research, and have some names and dates listed from the death register in the church there of Porters. Also photos (I think) of Porter headstones.
I put an ad in the Parish newsletter - but have never had a response! There are some Porters left in the area and have done mass letters in the mail a couple of times - but no real bite.
Thanks so much for your response! Believe it or not,you are the only one to have responded to this message!
I know so very little about my family, prior to their coming to America, that it's hard to tell if we can connect.
My Porters were in Great Somerford and Seagry as far as I can tell.As it turns out,William and Deborah (Salter) Porter came to America,as well.Their daughter,Sarah Elizabeth, came with her husband Thomas Carey) and their family probably around the same time,if not on the same ship.I haven't checked the ships passenger log for quite awhile.Lot (son of William and Deborah) came, too, along with the sister,Ruth. It appears that a whole segment of the community came along around the same time and all settled in the same area of Ohio (where I presently live).
You've sparked my interest in this branch of my family again,so I'll check out a little further there.I sure would like to find a connection with your family. It would be the first on that branch!
Where do you live?
Thank you.
Samuel or Robert Salter from Bandon married to a Leith?

I am looking for a needle in a haystack here. When my grandfather, Robert Samuel Leith wanted to immigrate from Glanmire he needed his birth certificate. And he found his name was really Robert Salter and he had been raised by his maternal Grandmother by the name of Leith. His Father's name was either Samuel or Robert Salter who had a brother by the name of John Salter, a farmer near Blackrock. Samuel and/or Robert ran a clothier in Bandon. My grandfather had an older sister by the name of Margaret Catherine Leith who was born out of wedlock and there MAY have been a younger sister who would have been just a baby the last my Grampa saw her. Margaret was sold into slavery/servitute in England and my Grampa, Robert Leith sent to a farm to be raised by his Grandmother. No info on the baby girl. His father had his mother committed to a psychiatric hospital in what we believe was Fota, Ireland possibly around 1920 or so, (we believe her name was Eliza or Catherine Leith but we are not sure). Samuel or Robert Salter was believed to be quite a wealthy man and of high status in the community of Bandon.

Any information on this Salter family including dates, names and locations would be greatly appreciated. Also, any ties to the family of an Eliza/Elizabeth or Catherine Leith also of Bandon or Glanmire.

My Grandfather Robert Leith (or Salter) eventually married Kathleen Jane Massey and immigrated to Canada on the MV Georgic which landed first in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Contact me at: trish4tay@aol.com

I was really looking for Margaret Dralle, b 3/1898, d. 12/11/1931, buried in Beloit, WI. He later married Jewel Mae Moore 11/24/1934, place unknown. Her birth and death dates and places unknown. Margaret Dralle would be my g-aunt from my father's side. I know that James Albert Salter is buried with other family members in Rosemound Cemetery in Waco. I plan to call McLennan Cty. Clerk's office and the cemetery that Margaret is suppose to be buried. I appreciate your help. Thanks for trying.

I'm Joan salter Nichols and we have a large amount of Salter genealogy. We come from Skibberin, county cork. Robert salter and Jane sweetnam came to America in 1845. We might be related!
My email: joniko@donobi.net
Joan

Greg,

I have a James Salter b. ca 1767 married to Nancy Ann Partain/Parten, daughter of Charles Partain/Parten b. Mar 16, 1732/33 VA d. ca Jun 1812, Edgefield Dist., SC.

I have worked on these families because there are records indicating a connection to the Coursey family, which is my maternal line, all going back to very early Old Edgefield Dist, SC. They also show up in early Sheppard and Riddle research.

I would be interested in comparing information on some of the families we have researched in common. Do you have any mention of the Coursey name in your research.

Please contact me at billee@truvista.net rather than through the message board for further discussion.

Billie Jones
billee@truvista.net
