Searching for info on James Salvage

Hi all,
I am doing a search on my fathers mothers family. It appears some where along the line the name altered from Salvage to Selvage, but I guess thats another story. I am looking for info on James Salvage born Suffolk England abt 1814 I think he was transported to Sydney nsw as a convict abt 1839-40 for the period of ten years. I dont know what his crime was.He married Sarah Moore (Not a convict) in 1850 in Newcastle NSW Australia. He married upon getting his ticket of freedom, and had at least three children.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Ann

Re: SALVAGE Family - Rougham, Suffolk

Very interesting. The plot thickens. I've got an Elizabeth Salvage, born abt. 1816. Over the course of several census decades she indicated she was born in Rushbrooke, Suffolk.

This Elizabeth Salvage married an Alfred Bell. Unsure of the date, perhaps abt. 1835. Alfred was a shoemaker in Bury, St. Edmunds, Suffolk. Living at Whiting Street bet. 1841 census and 1861 census.

When I examined 1841 census of the Albert Bell houshold, there was also listed an Ann Brouster age 80, an Elizabeth Smith age 60, and I suspect her daughter, Elizabeth Smith age 20. No relationship was indicated for Brouster or the two Smiths to the Bell houshold.

On a wild hunch I checked the 1841 and 1851 census of Rushbrooke. The was a George Salavage listed. In one of those census listing George claims born in Rougham. Born either abt. 1787 or 1791 depending on the census images.
Just adding my meager gleanings here. Wonder what else you may have?
Elizabeth/ Liz.
According to my calculations, we are 5th cousins! I have spent a day recently in the Suffolk Records Office, and Walter William is listed as being christened on 11 June 1867, son of Annetta Salvage (single woman). Actually, he was christened William Walter!
I have also managed to dig up many Salvage records from Rougham, as well as some from neighbouring parish Rushbrooke - if you like I can send you details once I have transcribed them onto my computer...
There are also plenty of Scarffs in both parishes - I haven't made any notes of them though.

Martin
Many thanks for this information - some of which coincides with some of my information. However, my latest findings are that Walter was the nephew of John and Ann Cornish - he is listed in the 1871 census as "sister's son" and in 1881 as "nephew". This has led me to think that Walter might have been the (illigitimate?) son of Annette Salvage who was a daughter of George and Mary and who died in 1870 - just 2 or 3 years after Walter's birth and thus he was brought up by John and Ann. Walter was my great great grandfather, the father of my paternal grandmother, Agnes Salvage. I guess that makes us related somehow.

If my findings are correct, walter salvage was the son of John (b1846) and Mary Cornish. John was son of George (b1806) and Mary, and George was the brother of my GGG Grandfather John Salvage. Their parents were Thomas (b1786) and Ann Smith (m 1806). Thomas was son of Jacob and Frances.

I have only recently started investigating the 'Rougham Salvages', and there seem to have been a lot of them, so I can not guarantee 100% that the above is correct - yet!

Please let me know if this is any help, or if you have any further info since your post.

Gooid luck!

Anyone know anything about the SALVAGE family in Rougham? Agnes Evelyn SALVAGE (b.circa 1905) was my grandmother and she married Herbert Alan SCARFF from Risby in 1927. Her father was Walter William SALVAGE (b.1867) and he was married to Edith Ada WHEELER. Any information would be useful. Thanks.
