POW/MIA Korean War

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Polk County, Iowa as his home of record. His remains were never recovered. Our government has no family contact at this time for this soldier

Soldier: WILLIAM BURREL SAMPLE
Born:April 2, 1928
Date of loss: November 27, 1950 MIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (79years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Re: John Sample Family

I Have a John Sample b.22 Nov 1796 d.1869, wife Sarah "Sally" Pruitt and a son James Monroe Sample born, 15 Dec 1824.

John traveled with his parents to Illinois (present day Madison County) about 1810. John served with his father and two brothers in the War of 1812 in Captain Samuel Whiteside's Company of Mounted Riflemen, Illinois Militia. About 1817, John married Sarah "Sally" Pruitt, daughter of Field Pruitt, Jr and Mary Powell of Mercer County, Kentucky. After settling in Morgan County, Illinois, in 1823, John began acquiring land and became the most prosperous of David's sons. With the help of his sons, John built a two-story brick house, making the bricks on his farm. John and Sally had thirteen children, nine sons and four daughters. They were members of the Indian Creek Primitive Baptist Church and provided room and board for traveling preachers who came through the area. Sally died 22 July 1858 and on 3 Jan 1861 John married Sarah Hewitt who lived until 1895. John and Sally are buried in the Sample Cemetery on the farm that stayed in the family for over one hundred years.
Here are the Sample Farm coordinates. 38degrees42'17.99"N and 85degrees11"37.7"W. Put this in google earth and it will show a farm that Andrew and Rachel owned in Indiana. Their grave is a little ways up the road and on the left, although,I take the word of the woman in the records office for that info. Her relatives are also buried there. There are only rocks to mark the graves. Rosemary Sample

Just out of interest, have you traced any of your Semples to Canada?

I am researching Derry records but also Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec records to study the various links in the Old World and the New. Semples settled in the Ottawa area and while some kept that surname others became Samples and even the Sampel spelling is used.

As far as we know, these Semples were from Larne, Antrim but ultimately came from the Lowlands of Scotland, probably Ayrshire.

Ron

It was very unusual for men to marry before the age of around 24 and women slightly younger. Marriages between couples under 21 was extremely rare in Ireland at the time.

William Sample (the names Semple and Sample were used interchangeably) married Nancy Rossborough at the Bushmills Presbyterian Church in parish of Dunluce, Antrim (not far from Coleraine, Derry) on Sept 26, 1862. You can get a copy of their registration from Dunluce Parish and that should give their ages and fathers names and the Townland in which each was living.

Ron Dale

I was cleaning out some of my mothers stuff and found a reference to Robert Sample married to Hanna Ingram. I thought it was Robert who married Susannas parents but after reading what you wrote, I am thinking that it is the name of his first wife. Do you know any thing on this family? Where did you get the letter L in Roberts name?

I agree - he'd be 15, certainly not impossible but highly unusual and probably scandalous for the times....however, these are the dates my research points to at present time and with the lack of a birth certificate for William probably impossible to verify 100%. Somewhere, though, I have William's death certificate and if his age is stated correct on it then 1848 is correct (he died in 1913 I believe - don't have that info handy at the moment).
Well, that is certainly some information that I did not have previously (and the spelling Rossborough probably explains in part why I've had trouble finding info about Nancy).
I will certainly have to try and get a copy of that marriage certificate.
Troy Semple

I'm not aware of any from my line who went to Canada. Half of William's siblings stayed in Ireland and are buried in the cemetery at the First Presbyterian Church in Garvagh, along with their parents Hugh and Sarah; the other half came to the States, with several located in the Logan County, Illinois area and one brother I know of who lived in Boston. Hugh was born in Paisely, Refrewshire, Scotland before emigrating to Northern Ireland.

Hugh and Sarah are my great-great grandparents and William is my great-grandfather. Do you have a connection to this family? I have been trying to find out information about Nancy Roxborough - about the only thing I know is she died prior to 1880. Also - my records show eldest child Sarah was born in Scotland, at least according to the U.S. Census entry made for William.

Sarah Jane Semple, daughter of William Semple of Droghead, baptised 19 Feb.1863. Mother's name not given in baptismal register. If William J. Semple was born July 1848 he's a bit young to be father of the above child.
Don't know anything more about Nancy Roxborough and am not connected to either Semples or Roxboroughs.

Ron- just re-reading your posting and am confused about statement that you can get copy of marriage from Dunluce Parish. Marriage will be available from the actual church, Ballymoney Registry Office or GRONI.

Very interesting that you found that marriage Ron. (Will almost certainly list age as 'full' unless they were underage and minister wrote their actual ages).
The Semple family I mentioned earlier (children of Hugh and Sarah Jane) certainly lived in Killykergan in Aghadowey Parish Co.Londonderry and in 1863 Sarah Jane Semple was baptised in Aghadowey Presbyterian Church. 1863 fits with a marriage in 1862 but Bushmills is quite a distance for them to have gone in those days (they lived about 10 miles south of Coleraine and Bushmills is 8 miles from Coleraine).
1862 marriage should have William's father's name and William's entries in U.S. census records might help sort out age as well as how many years married, number of children, etc.

Should also add that William J. Semple married Nancy Roxborough (a common name in Aghadowey parish) and was living at Droghed in 1863. Eldest child Sarah Jane was born 1863 in Ireland not Scotland.
