Benjamin Sampson, husband of Elizabeth Holtzclaw Mansfield Sampson, MO 1830

Looking for any information on Benjamin Sampson who married Elizabeth Holtzclaw Mansfield in Clay County, Missouri in 1830. Elizabeth Holtzclaw had two children from her first marriage (Martha Ann Mansfield and Shelton Mansfield) when she married Benjamin Sampson. Then she and Benjamin Sampson had two more children in Platte County, Missouri...Elizabeth S. Sampson (1831) and Ephraim A. Sampson (1835). Presumably, Benjamin Sampson and Elizabeth Holtzclaw Mansfield Sampson were deceased by 1847, when all four children went to Oregon on the Oregon Trail. Does anyone know when and where Benjamin Sampson was born and died, or anything else about his background?

Yes, Florence was married a few times! The only name I have for her fourth husband is "DeWitt," which I am assuming was his last name. They were married and divorced in Salem, Marion Co., Oregon. The marriage only lasted about a year or less, and they were divorced approx. 1964 or so.

If anyone has any information, please feel free to e-mail me at hornchrissy@yahoo.com.

Thank you!

Hi,

I am looking for info on Harry Carl Sampson who was born in California (I am guessing around 1884) and lived in Lewiston Maine atleast long enough to have a child out of wedlock in 1906 with Mederise L'Heureux. The daughter's birth cert was recorded with the state more than 30years after the event. I don't know why. But on it, it said that Harry was a painter living in Lewsiton at the time.

All help is appreciated. I have all the names on the L'Heureux side but have hit a brick wall on the Sampson side.

The daughter's name was Lillian Beatrice Sampson.

Thanks,
Angela

Sampson Family Research

I believe my ggg grandparents are Isaac and Agnes (Ivens) Sampson. My father is Thomas Leland Sampson (b. 1923, d. 1978), g-father is Samuel (unsure of middle initial) Sampson (b. 1873), gg grandfather is Garrett W. "Doctor G." Sampson (b. 1855). I was only 6 years old when my father died and am virtually without any knowledge of family history other than the census.

I am atttempting to confirm my research, learn of additional relatives both past and present, and obtain documentation regarding relatives who fought for the Confederacy so that I may join the SCV and perpaps the MOSB. I have a muster roll for Isaac E. Sampson and one census references Thomas Jefferson Sampson as having served in the Confederate Army. There may be a link to Lieutenant Samuel McClellan. I believe his dauther married Doctor G.

I am also seeking the linege for Flem D. Sampson, who I believe is my relative.

Finally, I am curious to learn of any connection this line has to Maryland during the 1600s and later. I was born here after my father relocated from Virginia. I was unaware of any family history here until recently when I learned that Sampsons lived here beginning in the 1600s.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I'm looking for info on my great grandfather, Johnnie Morris Sampson (or McMorris), b: 1834 in North Carolina and was in Madison, Florida, by 1865. He married Amanda Tookes of Thomasville Georgia. I suspect that his last name could have been McMorris rather than Sampson, but I cannot be sure. Please be aware that one of his parents was probably white/Indian, so if anyone of that persuasion knows anything about that name, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Searching for Sampson's

I am a Sampson and pretty much know nothing about my family history.

My father left when I was only three. I have met him only one-time and got very little family information from him.

I am looking to trace down my family members but really do not know where to start.

I will list what I do know and hopefully other Sampson's out there can help out. To the best of my abilities I think most of the Sampson's I would be related to are from the Indiana or IL areas. Below I am going to list what little I do know about the Sampson side of my family.

My name is Phillip Lee Sampson Jr. I was born in Michigan City, IN in the year of 1958.

My fathers name is Phillip Lee Sampson. He was born 06-28-1935 I think in Indiana but not positive. I do have pictures if needed.

My father married my mother who at the time was Ellen Deeds, her maiden name was Ellen Gordon.

My father tells me I have a sister named Sharon K Sampson. He said she was going to school in Marshall, IL. He said she was born 10-12-1954. He told me her mothers name was Betty Joan Cook. Like me, he left my sister at a very young age and knew nothing more about her. I have also tried finding my sister with no success. She may have gone by Sharon Cook as a child I do not know.

My grandfathers name is supposedly Phillip Oliver Sampson. I have no birth or death dates. No state of residence or anything else on my grandfather.

My father Phillip L Sampson has 2-homes, one in Broken Arrow, OK and one in Salem, IN. if is this helps any.

It seems as though no one knows about his life but him. My mother told me she never met any of his family as he refused to allow it. Why she does not know. They had a very short marriage.

I also have a borther name Jeffery Sampson also father by my father Phillip Sampson.

Can someone please help me out? I have been trying to learn my family history on the Sampson side and just do not know where to start.

Phillip Sampson

Phillip Sampson was born Most Likely between 1800 and 1835. The Confederates came and got him and forceably took him to fight in the civil war. Records show he was wounded, then died in South Georgia of Consumption (thought to be TB). I am Looking to find any trace of his birth and home town and State. I think he may have came out of Virginia or the Carolinas. Records can be found where his wife and some of the close relatives and/or neighbors say he abandoned his wife and family. The south Georgia Death record comes from military records and I accept. If you have any information regarding Phillip Sampson, please respond.

The County of Origin of Ezekiel Sampson and Family

Issac Sampson son of Ezekiel Sampson and and Luranah ? was born in 1760 in New York. Issac married Miriam Calkins daughter of John Calkins and Abigail Northrup in 1792. Miriam was also born in 1760 in New York. Issac passed away in Fulton Illinois in 1838 but I'm not sure what happened to Miriam. Issac and Miriam had at least 10 children one of which was named Roxana. If anyone has any additional information on this family I'd certainly appreciate it.
Jeremiah(?) Sampson of NH and Maine

I am seeeking documentation of the birth, marriage and death of my great grandfather Sampson. Family lore says his first name was Jeremiah, but there seems to be some doubt about that. He was born in either Barrington or Barnstead, NH about 1818-19 to Jonathan and Abigail (Clark) Sampson. 1830 Federal Census reports of Barnstead, NH indicate Jonathan and Abigail had six children in the household. My research has documented three of them: Nehemiah (1820-1836), Ivory (1825-?) and Frances. Jeremiah went to Falmouth (Foreside) Maine and married Mary Knight about 1844. He sired two sons, Charles (b. abt 1848) and Albert (b. 1846. He died about 1848 in Falmouth, most likely from appendicitis. By the 1850 Federal census in Falmouth , Mary Sampson had remarried to a Stephen Adams (the household included Charles (1) and Albert(4). Albert Samspon was my grandfather.
I have documentation that Mary and Stephen Adams subsequently raised another family of 4-5 children who were half-siblings to my grandfather, including letters from one half-brother, Frank.
My brick wall for my DAR application is finding any actual documentation about my elusive great grandfather. Since Albert, my grandfather was only a small child when his father died and his recollections are the only bits of information that have been passed down, I have been unsuccessful so far in finding the necessary documentation -in spite of multiple letters and visits to all the relevant vital records sources. any leads would be most appreciated!!!
Martha

In the 1850 census taken in the town of Blooington in Missouri, was listed that Benjamin Sampson, age 51 and his wife Mary, age 39 had Elizabeth Hickman,age15 living with them. they also had 3 children (1)Martha Sampson, age 7 (2) John Sampson, age 5 and (3) Henry Sampson, age 1. Also, in this town there was listed a Richard Sampson, age 25 and his wife Lucinda, age 25 as having a young girl Ellen Hickman, age 8 as living with them and thier two children,(1)James Sampson, age 5 and (2) Willis Sampsom, age 2.The two girls Elizabeth Hickman and Ellen Hickman are my g/grandfathers sisters. His name was Silas Hickman. At this time he was living in Jackson in Buchannan,CO., Missouri with Robert and Sarah McCain, age 63. No other children are listed in the household. Silas was age 13 at this time.We can not find any record on Silas or his sisters before this time. We think for some reason all three were living with different members of the family. The girls may have even taken the Sampson name. There may be another sister by the name of Susan Hickman, age 10(?). If you have any information on any of the above names, please help us.We are at a dead end.THANK-YOU DEBORAH

Sampson's in Montana +/- 1930's

I recently discovered that a distant relative of mine, Charles M. Sampson, (middle name probably Merton), was living in Missoula, Montana with his wife, Inga, in the 1930's. I'm looking for any of his children or other descendants, as well as perhaps any siblings of his who may have lived in Montana as well. This Sampson family originated in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin and prior to that in Maine. Charles M. Sampson was (probably) a son of Merton Sampson who was a son of Frank and Rowena (Shaffstall) Sampson.

I have more info on this line going back to the 1700's and would love to hear from any connections to this Montana strain of our family.

Thanks and take care,
Stephanie Sampson
Los Angeles, CA
FamilyTresearch@hotmail.com

Arthur Samspon - Michigan

I'm currently doing some research on the Sampson branch of my family. I recently managed to find some of my ancestors in a Census report, and it intrigued me. I would like to find more information on the topic if anyone has any. Here is what I know:

My great-grandmother was an Esther Sampson (b. 30 Nov. 1911. d. 7 July 1988 in Bay City Michigan. She was married to a Robert Plessner until she died.

Then, from the 1920 Census I can glean: her father was Arthur Sampson who was born in Michigan. He was 40 years old at the time of the 1920 Census (but 35 at the time of the 1910 Census, which is causing a bit of confusion). His children at this time were Eva, Arthur, Beatrice, and Esther. His wife is a bit of a mystery to me. Everyone in my family said her name was a Naomi Prevo, but the name on the Census (both 1910 and 1920) is illegible. It looks more like a Lovey or a Lomey Provost/Prevost.

Arthur's mother-in-law, Jennie/Jinnie Prevost/Provost lived with them. She was 75 years old at this time. She came from Canada around 1880 and according to the 1920 Census, spoke French and no English. Her parents also came from Canada and were of French descent.

Now, in the 1910 Census it says her name was Virginia (so Jennie/Jinnie could have been a nickname) and she was married to an August Provost/Prevost. They had been married for 40 years. He came from Canada in 1883 according to the 1910 Census. This Census also states that Virginia had 16 kids, three of whom were alive at the time of the Census.

Is there anyone out there with further information, or at the very least, some clarifications to explain the seeming contradictions in the 1910 and 1920 Census?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

-Victor Mobley

1587 - The Lost Colony of NC - The Sampson family is a family of interest for them.

First the Lost colony project is a non profit organization.

Hello,

For those of you who don't know about the mystery of the Lost Colony, here's a primer. In 1587, Sir Walter Raleigh financed a venture in which 116 men, women and children were planning to establish the first permanent colony in the New World. Their goal was to raise tobacco and other supplies that colonists were unable to obtain in England, and to search for precious minerals, like gold.

In the fall of 1587, the colonists finally arrived on Roanoke Island in present day North Carolina, after a very difficult journey in which their food supplies were ruined. They sent John White, whom they had elected governor, back to England to obtain food and supplies and expected his return in the spring of 1588. However, the Spanish attached England and England, having no Navy, impressed all of her fishing vessels and private merchant ships into Naval service. Finally, in 1590, three years after
leaving the colonists which included his daughter, son-in-law and infant granddaughter, he returned to Roanoke Island to find it deserted, but not destroyed. It appeared as if the colonists had simply moved. A single word, a clue, Croatan, was carved on a tree. The Croatan were the friendly Indians living nearby. Before John's departure, he had instructed the colonists to carve crosses if they had to leave in distress. There were no crosses.

John White would spend the rest of his life searching for the Lost Colonists. Many hints and clues indicate that at least some of the Colonists survived and were assimilated into the native tribes. The
question is, did they, and if so, who are they today?

In 1993, the original site of the Croatan village was located. Subsequent archaeological and genealogical research suggests that the colonists did survive, and that when the land was granted to settlers, it was granted to some of those survivors who were by that time considered to be Indians. With recent advances in DNA for genealogy, we finally have, today, the ability to solve the mystery. We have created a plan that combines history, genealogy and DNA to solve the mystery. However, we can't do this alone. We need the help of the families who have been identified as "families of interest", being either roster members of the Lost Colony of those who obtained land grants on the original Croatan village site. Many of those names are the same.

In order to educate people and work closely with people who are interested, we are sponsoring the Lost Colony Symposium for DNA and Recent Research Sept. 7-9, 2007 at the Lost Colony Center in Williamston, NC. The symposium will be held between the Center and the Holiday Inn, as noted on the flyer at the website

Given that your surname is one of those on our "Names of Interest" list, I hope that people on the list will join with us in our research. I am hoping from this mailing, aside from encouraging people to attend the Symposium, to achieve the following:

1. To identify a primary research person or persons for your particular
surname who would serve as a contact/coordinator for future postings,
requests and research.
2. To identify a family archival website(s) if one exists.
3. To identify if there are any families of that surname that are from NC
(or early coastal SC or VA), have oral histories of Indian or "mixed"
heritage, are involved with any of the tri-racial isolate groups
(Melungeons, Red Bones, etc.) and/or have any oral history of the Lost
Colonies.
4. To determine if the family group is involved already with DNA testing,
and if so, who coordinates that effort.
5. To determine if there is any research occurring or that has occurred for
your surname in Great Britain, and if not, if anyone is interested in
pursuing that avenue.

To become involved with the Lost Colony project, or to support the project, please attend our Symposium. Our project plan will be announced at the Symposium, and we have a long list of wonderfully educational speakers. The
flyer is attached. Bring your pedigree charts and your genealogy as the right people will be present to help you with your testing plan.

If you can't attend the conference, you can still join the project.

Information will be posted shortly about how to do that on the Lost Colony website. We are in the process of setting us a private newsgroup for project members only which will also be available after the symposium.
Furthermore a blog has been created. http://www.the-lost-colony.blogspot.com/

If you are interested in this project or can be of help in any way, please contact me at restes@comcast.net.

The surnames are on our blog: http://www.the-lost-colony.blogspot.com/
Lost Colony website: http://lost-colony.com/home.html

Roberta Estes

"I will be on vacation from now until July 24th, and I will have very little access to e-mail. Please e-mail questions about the Symposium or the project to either my volunteer assistant, Nelda Percival at nelda_percival@hotmail.com or Anne Pool, the Center's Educational Director at croatan@peoplepc.com. They will answer any immediate questions about the Symposium and you will be put on an interest list."
Sampson and Turner families in Lincolnshire England

Looking for further info on the following family:

Thomas SAMPSON b. abt 1842 in Skirbeck,Lincolnshire England (1861 census). Wife Emma Sampson (Turner) b. abt 1846, possibly in Potterhanworth, Lincolnshire, England.

I believe Emma’s maiden name was TURNER based on 1865 England marriage records from Lincolnshire. No further info on her family, birth or death.

Thomas was born to Thomas and Sarah Sampson. Family living in Boston, Lincolnshire in the 1861 census. Other siblings include Henrietta and John W. Sampson.

Thomas and Emma are listed in the 1871 census living in Skirbeck with 5 children: Annnie age 5, Lizzie age 4, Thomas age 3, Emma age 2, and Alice age 4 mos. Later approx 1874 a 6th child, Rose is born.

In 1881, Alice, Emma, Rose and Thomas (Jr) are living in the Boston Union Workhouse.

Later in Dec 1885, Emma, Alice and Rose immigrate to the US. Thomas Sr immigrates possibly twice, in 1875 and again in 1880, and remarries a Mary (?) and they live in Washington DC. Mary was born in Germany according to the census. Emma and Rose are living with Thomas and Mary in the 1900 census.

Trying to find out what happened to Emma (mother) to cause Thomas to leave and the younger children to end up in the workshouse. Any other info or leads appreciated.

FYI
In my unending search (isn't this fun) I got a response from Mike and Wendy Sampson in Janesville, WI. who doubted that he was a relative since I was looking for English ancestors. They explained that his family were all Native Americans and that they had a book listing 400 Sampsons in Wisconsin. Hope this info helps someone.
Phone: 608-756-1947
W3400@aol.com

IN the 1920 cencus they are living in Ridgeway, PA and have 2 kids Raymond & Margurite. In 1930 they are living in Oneida Co., NY with their daughter Margurite, Her husband Hugh KINKEAD and their children Jean & John. They also had an adopted son that was named Richard Herbert Sampson b. 6/25/1918 in St. Mary's, PA, but he is neither cencus w/ them. Richard's adoption was not a legal adoption and he was said to have been born a WOOSTER. Am curious to the relationship of the SAMPSON and WOOSTER families of Elk Co. Any help in finding these families would be appreciated. THanks, Jennifer Wenzel

Charles (Carl) Auguste Sampson

II am researching a turn of the century performer named Sampson. He was a vaudeville/music hall strongman. I am hoping to find any one who might be related or have more information about Sampson’s family. Here’s what I know.

His full name was Charles (sometimes Carl) Auguste Sampson. He was supposedly born in Metz, France (which accounts for the French/German first names) on 16 April 1859 (although I have source that says it was 1851). I know that he lived in London in 1889, and he also had a residence in Detroit, MI (I have an address for this). As I mentioned, he was a vaudevillian, so he traveled a lot. I know that he was married to an American woman—possibly named Anna, a dressmaker (most likely from Detroit). He was in Chicago in 1893 for the Columbian Exhibition. Most of the other dates in his life that I have are professional dates: where and when he performed in particular theatres. I lose him in London in 1904.

If anyone knows anything about this CA Sampson, I would love to get in touch with you. Please email me directly at joshmbuck@yahoo.com

Thank you so much in advance for your interest and help.
James Sampson was a cabinet maker, married to Martha, he had a brother Mac married to Ann. They seem to be the only ?family/friend connection I have to my maternal grandmother Helen Boyle nee Crowe who was brought up in an orphanage in Glasgow (1880's) Would love to give my 90 year old mother some information about her roots.

Pictures of Sampson, Crickenberger, Vaughan, Trumpthy

I am looking for anyone from the subject surnames in Augusta County, Viriginia.

My grandmother, Nettie Jane Sampson (1869-1915), married James N. Medlock in Augusta County, 1897, and moved to Saline Co., Arkansas. Her sisters married Crickenberger, Vaughan, and Trumpthy.

Nettie's parents were Layton Milton Sampson and 1st wife, Susan Elizabeth Humphrey.

I have been given a large box of old photographs and many have the name Crickenberger written on them. Some of the others are of her sisters and brothers before they married. Also included is who I believe to be Layton's daughter, Dora, by his 3rd wife. Any help identifying any of the other pictures will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Janet Medlock Cook

Henry Atkins Sampson

I'm searching for any information about Henry A. This is what I have at present.

Henry was probably born in Halstead, Kent, Englang, around 1829 - at leat that is the information recorded in the 1861 census. Accoring to his marriage entry his father was Henry and his father's occupation was clerk (i.e. this would be taken as being a minister of religion).

He served in the army but had retired by 1 January 1859 when he married Olivia Barnett.

It would appear that Henry A. and Olivia had a string of children. The ones found thus far are:
1. Josephine Olive b. 1859 in Hastings, Sussex; died 1884
2. Henry Hubert b. 1861 Great Munden, Herts.
3. Charles Edgar b. 1862 at Great Munden; Bap at Great Munden on 25 June 1862
4. Julia - bap Great Munden 5 Feb 1864
5. Cicely b. 1865 London; died 1959 aged 94
6. Elizabeth Gertrude b. 1 Mar 1868 Holloawy, Middlesex; died 1 July 1934; address at time of death Pineview, Pinewood Gardens, Southborough, Kent.

Cicely and Elizabeth G did not marry.

Olivia died 25 August 1873. cause of death was post partum haemorrhage. Tghere could have been further children born between Apeil 1871 and Olivia's death.

Any further inforamtion about any member of this family would be most welcome.

Lorraine
