Hi I've been researching my great great great grandfather Beverly Sanders. My great aunt who told me our family was part Cherokee. When I found Beverly's service record for the Colored Infantry in the Civil War it didn't say black, yellow, brown, copper like the other servicemen do. I read an article that said when Native Americans joined the colored Infantry they were not distinguished from the black soldiers because at that time both were legally considered "colored". Beverly is described at having brown hair, gray eyes. He was born in Virginia in 1836 and enlisted in Vicksburg, MS in 1863. He was married to Rachel and had a son named Thomas Beverly Sanders of copiah County, MS. He died of cholera is 1866. He was promoted several times while in the military. Any information would be appreaciated.
