Almost all of the ancestors of both my mother and my father lived in Franklin, Elbert, and Hart counties in the 1800s and early 1900s, so we probably have many lines in common. I, too, have heard that Elias Sanders was of Indian descent and, at one time, assumed that those statements were based upon some proof. However, the only documentation seems to be negative - that is, the rejection of his grandchildren's claims for compensation under the Cherokee rolls.

I worry that easy acceptance of this story is discouraging researchers from continuing to look for Elias's father, who may have been an Englishman named Sanders, or his mother, who may have been an English woman whose maiden name was Plumer. Any proof that would establish either his Indian or English heritage would be a step forward, but right now, there don't seem to be many people actively searching for it. If we keep an open mind, share information, and insist on documentation, perhaps, we eventually will be able to determine which story is true.
