Richard Sanford was born in 1535. His brother George was born in 1533. My line follows Richard. I can trace Richard back to Sir John Sandford(same as Sanford)born 1418,died 1452. One of the best books is Thomas Sanford, The Emigrant to New England, by Carlton E. Sanford (Tuttle Co.)

Dear Bette, I am not sure whether you are interested in the Belleville-Second River SANDFORDs, or whether you are responding to my "two men who by 1755 owned property in HorseNeck, and had built houses". The names of my two San(d)ford men were Thomas SANDFORD and Peter SANDFORD - and they were brothers.

Thomas and Dorcas (Spier, widow of Thomas Stagg) were married 1778 in Essex County, NJ, and sold their Horseneck land in 1806 and moved to (then) Ontario County, New York. Thomas SANDFORD's land is identified on the Thomas BALL map of Horseneck.

Peter and Nelly (VanEs/VanNess, widow of Stephen Barry) were married in 1783 in Essex County, NJ and sold their land in 1810 and moved to Ontario County, New York. Peter SANDFORD's land is identified on the Thomas MILLIDGE Map of Horseneck.

I have found no documentation for the whereabouts of either man before 1755.

Both Thomas and Peter appear on the 1810 Census in Ontario County, NY. Are you also connected to these two Sandford men? Pat

Dear Brooke: Sandfords were originally from England. They owned Barbadoes, Island and many were sent there to cultivate it and ended up staying there. When the US was discovered, they sent some of the Dutch to buy land and settle there. My Family of William Sandford is one of them.
John P. SANDFORD, 1821-1881, NJ>NY

I am trying to prove, or disprove, that John P. SANDFORD is a son of Paul DeBow SANDFORD and Rachel HOPPER, who were married 31 Aug 1820 at the Reformed Dutch Church, Pompton Plains, Morris Co. NJ, and I would like to correspond with anyone who is researching this line.

Based on John P. Sandford's age at his death on 18 Apr 1881 (60 years, 2 months, 15 days), he was born 3 Feb 1821.

John was married to Mary Ann SUMNER on 2 Oct 1838 by Rev. David R. DOWNER, first pastor of West Presbyterian Church, New York City. According to the 1900 census, Mary was born in April 1821 in England.

John, a cabinetmaker, lived most of his adult life in Delaware Co. (Andes and Delhi) NY. He enlisted in the 72nd New York Volunteer Infantry, Co. B., 21 Jun 1861 and was mustered out 30 July 1863. John then joined the Veterans Reserve Corps on 25 Dec 1863 and served until 30 Jun 1866.

The last six years of John's life, he lived in New York City, where he died 18 April 1881 at 23 W. 123rd St. According to his death certificate (Liber 12, No. 5860), John was born in New Jersey. Place of burial was to be Delhi, Delaware Co. NY. (The above data are from John's Civil War Pension Application and Mary's Widows Application.)

Based on census data, John and Mary had eight children: John H. (b abt. 1839), Sophia (b abt. 1841), William S. (b abt. 1844), Edward F. (b Jun 1848), Emma (b abt. 1850), Mary Elizabeth (b Jul 1852), Ella M. (b abt. 1855), and Frederick (b abt. 1860). In the 1900 census, Mary says she had 10 children, 4 of whom were living in 1900.

I also have information on the descendants of some of John P. Sandford's children.--Sandy Brown
Eliza J. SANDFORD & Jared C. MORRIS, 1823-1911, Morris Co. NJ

Eliza J. SANDFORD (b Oct 1829 NJ; d 18 Jan 1911, Brookside, Mendham Twp., Morris Co. NJ) and Jared C. MORRIS (b abt. 1823 NJ; died 25 Mar 1897, Brookside) were married 20 Dec 1848 in Mendham Twp.

According to the 1860 and 1870 censuses for Mendham, they had at least three children: Mary (b 1850), John L. (b 1852) and Emma C. (b 1855).

In her will, my GGgrandmother Jane M. (Jennie) TALLMAN Sandford (b 1836 NY), who was married to Martin V.B. SANDFORD (b 1835 NJ), referred to Eliza J. Morris of Brookside as her sister-in-law.

Martin is the son of Paul DeBow SANDFORD (b 1798 NJ) and Margaret BUSH (b 1812 NY), Paul's second wife. Paul and Margaret were married in 1834. At this point in my research, I'm thinking that Eliza J. must be Paul's daughter by his first wife, Rachel HOPPER (b 1798 NJ; d 1832 at New Manchester [Paterson]).

I'm looking for any documentation as to Eliza J. Sandford's parents and for any descendants of Eliza and Jared.--Sandy Brown
The marriage took place in Bridport, Dorset, and then they settled in Abbotts Ann. The 1841 census return gives her birth county as Hampshire, but the 1851 census states that she was born in Bridgemont, Somerset.

She's the daughter of John Scrope Sandford. Does anyone know what year she was born? Some family trees say she was born in 1642, and she was christened in 1652, but other family trees say she was born in 1652.

You don't say where you found the information you're seeking to confirm. You must go back to the original source and not depend upon the research of others. You will need to consult the parish registers to find the date of baptism. Most children are baptised as infants, but many families baptised all the children at once, so a baptism date will only give you an approximate birth date.

Post the county in which your Katherine lived and someone may be able to provide you with information from the parish registers.

You would probably find it very helpful to join the appropriate mailing list for the locality in which Katherine and her family lived.

For more information on researching England records, explore GENUKI at http://www.genuki.org.uk

Good luck!

I was just wondering if you were still active because your message is dated 2001. I would love to found out what your mother-in-law can share with me of the Sandfords and William the Conquerer. Someone has done a lot of the research that I found on the web, that dates back to Normandy and William the Conquerer. I am guessing that perhaps the Sandfords came to England with William. I would like to have some proof. Thanks Eloise

Parents born in Holland
Following are Sanford/Sandford Marriages listed in the Dutch Reformed Church:
1833- Edward Gurnsey & Cynthis Sandford
1840- Noah Sanford & Ellen Williams
1849- John Sanford & Anna Van Ness of Totowa
1857- Jacob Sanford & Sara C. Jacobus
1859- 3/26..John Hartley & Nellie Sanford of Totowa
1860- 3/18..Ira Hartley & Clara Sanford of Totowa
1866- 12/31..Cornelius Sanford & Margaret Ann Lindsey
1880- 9/12..Coronel(?) E. Drew & Jennie E. Sanford
Note: Totowa was a suburb of Paterson, N.J.
Published in the Paterson Morning Call:
1905-Died, Dec. 13,Cornelius Sandford.."a well-known citizen and a retired merchant" of Paterson, N.J.
1914-Died- Aug.25, Leonard Sanford, Carpenter & builder.

This is all the information I found on the Dutch Sanford/Sandford families of Paterson. They were probably related...but no proof. DNA would have to prove that.
I do have more on the 4th Street Sanford family ( who they married etc.) if someone is particularly interested.

Regarding the Essex Cty Sandfords... have done some research on a Sandford family which settled eventually in New Barbadoes Neck, Bergen Cty, N.J.
This family goes back to a Captain William Sanford who was banished from his plantation in Dutch Guiana, which is in So. America. This plantation was inherited from a relative ,Major Nathaniel Kingsland of Barbados (but of the distinguished English Kingland family.)
I have quite a lot of information on this family who ended up in New Barbadoes (Hackensack, N.J.) and also in Paterson..(to make things more confusing that they already are.) If anyone wants more information on this interesting family....just ask....but I have to take a "breather" right now from typing!
I hope someone is helped by this information. Remember that the Dutch Reformed Church is known for keeping wonderful records!
Peace!
Kathryn

If you need more information I'll get out my info. They lived on 4th Street in Paterson, N.J.
There are other Sandfords who ended up in New Jersey.

My Greatgrandfather was William Sandford, dob 1805 in Virginia. Died Newtown MO,1869. Arrived in Mo circa1845 from KY with young wife and 4 children 6or7 more followed. Since my father was a Presbyterian I assume his forebearers were Scotcg Irish. Wn. was a farmer and probably worked imself to death. I'm seeking info on the Sandfords in Scotland. Also have Ydna which I would like to compare if any comparison is available.

First, as with everything you find, you need to know what the record sources are. Are they documented? Where are you finding this information?

I may have information which will be useful to you. Are you sure your Sandfords are Sandfords with a "D" in the middle (they can be different from "SaNfords" without the D.)? And are you sure your Sandfords are Scottish? My Sandfords are English, from Shropshire, and initially immigrated to Philadelphia, before going to Fayetteville, NC. Be in touch, and we can trade info, even if it's only to determine we have no connection! Regards.

Kathryn, I have two San(d)ford men who were in Horse Neck, Essex County by 1755. I would appreciate knowing about your Sandfords. Pat

You have a wonderful list of Sandfords! They don't happen to connect to me, but I appreciate your typing them. My San(d)fords are not part of the New Barbadoes Neck family either. They were in NJ from before 1755-1810, then moved to Ontario County, NY.
Thank you for your good work!
These names are from the 'Barbadoes Neck' Sandfords - any people from Belleville or Second River are from the same family - a big one!

My two men were land owners and building homes by 1755. Pat
