I would love to purchase a copy if it's still available or if anybody has the information scanned in to the computer.
My mother Ruthie Mae Sandifer was born in Bougalusa, Lousiana. She had several brothers and sisters, Donna, Darlene, Eddie, Michael, and I think others. Both her parents were killed, first her father, then later her mother. All of the children were split up and sent to different homes. I know my mother made contact with some of them, but sadly I am no longer on speaking terms with my mother.
She used to tell me I was named after my grandmother (my name is Joy) but I have been unable to find anything. I know my grandmother died in a car accident but that's about all I know.
I would appreciate any information you might be able to share.
Oh!How incredible to hear from you!

If you are descended from John Robert Woodriff we are truly cousins!
I am descended from one of his and Jessie's sons, John Richmond Piers Woodriff and his cousin - and wife - Florence Jaffray, daughter of John Richmond Jaffray and Caroline Woodriff Jaffray's son Arthur Woodriff Jaffray and his wife and cousin Mary Twynam Woodriff. (Whew!)
My grandfather was Donald Jaffray Woodriff and my Dad was George Mairs Woodriff. I am Carol Jaffray Woodriff.

I am in touch with several other descendants too, some who descended from another of John Robert's sons, Daniel Thomas Woodriff and his wife Augusta Dahmer/Dahmes who came to America via Canada and were real pioneers later too, in Colorado and even later, one descendant named George Leslie Woodriff hybridized the Stargazer lily and Woodriff's Memory, among other plants.

I also have met up with folks on the internet who are descended from one of these boy's sisters, Mary Twynam Woodriff Jaffray Moir - known as Polly - and their half sister Maria Asia Hull, who married Major General William Gossett and emigrated to New Zealand.
From what you say, I am guessing you are descended from another sister, Caroline Elise Woodriff, or Cazzie, who married Sir Benjamin Collins! Do you know anything about the other sister's descendants, those of Lucy Ethel Woodriff and her husband, Berkeley Crosbie Quill?

Please get back to me quickly at cwoodriff@hotmail.com as I can hardly wait to see the image you have of Asia Sumarel! I have, unfortunately, learned nothing new about her but want to desperately! I have a house in Daytona Beach Florida and have gone to St Augustine where Asia and Daniel lived aboard the navy's cutter Dependance and rescued Loyalist refugees fleeing the Revolutionary War in the Colonies. I hope to return and do more research and try to uncover something about them to prove they were there!

Your Texas Cousin, (YTC)

Carol Jaffray Woodriff

I found your post of September 2005, and am hoping you might still be looking.

I am also descended from Asia Sumarel, her son John Robert Woodriff was my great-great-grandfather. I have a black and white photograph of an oil portrait of her (dark hair, fine features, a long nose). The Maritime Museum at Greenwich holds a collection of Woodriff papers, and my grandmother corresponded with them in the 1970s.

Did you ever find out any more about her?

Antonia Johnson
Bath, UK

My great grandmother was from south Louisiana and married a Charley Lehman and the lived in the Allen Parish (Calcaseau)area. She had a sister named Mary. I found a family with both a Mary and a Viola in the 1900 census in Sugar Town, but there were no parent's names so I can not go further. They had several children, the oldest was a boy named Fred Lehman who married a Hazel Hamilton (also of LA). If you know of this family please answer, thank you.

Hi Brittany,

I am still very much involved with working/researching Sandifers.

I know that Rebecca Simmons (wife of Benjamin Sandifer) was the daughter of Richard Simmons and wife "Nancy" Ann Tyler, and that Rebecca's sister Elizabeth married William Y. Sandifer....but, at this time, I don't believe that William Y. Sandifer and Benjamin Sandifer were brothers. I believe the reason they stayed close together and lived close together was the result of their wives being sisters. If you have data or documentation that shows otherwise, I would really like to learn about it.

I also think Rebecca Simmons was the 2nd wife of Benjamin Sandifer...due to a document recorded in Barnwell County, SC.

At this time, based on circumstantial evidence, I believe Benjamin Sandifer was the 2nd son of William Nightingale Sandifer.

I would like to continue discussing more about these Sandifers with you via direct e-mail. My e-mail address is
mtss915@sbcglobal.net
Please contact me there.

Tarney Sandifer Smith

I just found this post although it has been a couple years since you posted this I am interested in your knowledge on the subject. I am Hansford duncan sandifer's b.1841 great great great granddaughter. I know he fought in the civil war and was captured at the spottsylvania court house. His father was Benjamin Sandifer and mother rebecca simmons I can't find out who Benjamins parent's are I only know Benjamin's brother is william y. sandifer. I have wondered about the yarborough connection but I don't know. Let me know if you have any knowledge on this line or any pictures/documents. I will also look into the Duncan connection. Thanks, Brittany

Sandifer, Robert or John of NC or SC late 1700's

trying to find information about two Sandifer (also have seen it Sandefer) families. The Sandifers were probably brothers who married McGregor sisters by c. 1794 as they were married when the girls father died.

John Sandifer married Francis McGregor d/o John McGregor
Robert Sandifer married Cinthey (or something close to Cynthia)McGregor d/o John McGregor
The McGregors were from Northampton Co., NC however the fathers estate was settled in Anson Co., NC from what I can gather.

A John Sandefer bought property in Northampton Co. NC in 1816 but I do not know if this is the John mentioned above. The land was bought from a William McGregor so seems connected.

The Robert Sanifer family (wife Centhey McGregor) moved to LA where from the information I have all their children were born. Best I can tell they had about 5 boys and 1 girl. Robert may have died by 1819 as it appears he was dead at the time of his daughters marriage but the mother was living at the time.

I am trying to nail down the ages of the McGregor girls who married the Sandifers. I am trying to research the McGregor family they came from to find out if the wife mentioned in their fathers will was their mother or if it was a earlier wife.

If anyone is researching either of these Sandifers I would love to have contact. My email is-ahgenealogy@gmail.com

or if responce is here on the board I will be notified.
Thank you
AmyAnn

SANDIFER DNA Project Update: 11 Kits and 3 Groups

I wanted to share that with alot of help I have updated the SANDIFER DNA Project Home Page to update on the 11 DNA samples we have and have grouped them to more easily understand the matches. Sid SANDIFER has provided some outstanding discussion on the meaning of the different groupings or Haplotypes.

One of the interesting things to me is the various speeling variations that are matching up.

https://www.familytreedna.com/public/SANDIFERDNAProject

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at firegrl@sierratel.com
3 SANDIFER DNA Matches

We received a DNA Kit result today and this brings 3 different SANDIFER lines matching on 12 markers. I anticipate the results from one additional kit in very soon. These are three completely unknown related SANDIFER lines, but they come out of the same geographic area.

John D. SANDIFER, b1783SC (kit 75026). Migrated to Barnwell District, SC, married Susanna TYLER and d1854 Copiah Co., Miss.

Francis D. SANDIFER, b 1824 (kit 102506). He was the brother of Gregory Jones SANDIFER and Joshua SANDIFER. They came from Virginia across the wilderness trail through Tennessee and Kentucky to Greenville, Illinois to Golden City, MO. Then to Girard, Kansas and then returned to Greenville, IL.

Abraham Norvell SANDERFER/SANDIFER from Chester Co., SC (kit 122381). It is spelled both ways on his will and unfortunately his signature looks like a doctors; not quite clear enough to decide how he meant to spell it. Samuel SANDERFER was Abraham's son. He married a neighbor's daughter, Mary LOTT, and they had seven sons. This line is directly and proudly related to his son, James Monroe SANDERFER.

Johnson P SANDIFER (kit 123106) is the possible son of William Nightengale Sandifer & possible grandson of James Alexander Cumberbatch Sandiford of Barbados. Johnson P SANDIFER, b 1794 Barnwell SC d 3 Jul 1866 Lincoln Miss m Jane "Jennie" Rice.
First SANDIFER DNA Match!!

We have our first 12 marker DNA match and it is will a kit from John D. SANDIFER Dob c1783 SC and Francis D. SANDIFER. Dob 1824.

Francis D. SANDIFER was the brother of Gregory Jones SANDIFER and Joshua SANDIFER. They came from Virginia across the wilderness trail through Tennessee and Kentucky to Greenville, Illinois to Golden City, MO. Then to Girard, Kansas and then returned to Greenville, IL.

John D. SANDIFER d1850 Copiah Co., Miss.

I think there is a strong liklihood that the Edgefield Co., SC SANDIFERs are related and DNA testing can help point the finger better in that direction. I would LOVE to find a descendant of William Nightingale SANDIFER b c1760 SC to test to compare to these two lines!! Please feel free to contact me for more information.

Candace Gregory
firegrl@sierratel.com

My uncle Rex Sandifer, who lives near Dallas, Tx, has most of the records and the Sandifer book. If you like, I can put you in touch with him. Thanks. Suzanne Sandifer

Floyd Sandifer and Lucy (Jones) Sandifer

I am trying to find where Floyd Sandifer was born.

and when he was born and where he died.

He had the following children that I know:

My great-great grandmother, Martha Sandifer (sometimes called Mattie)

William Sandifer

Nancy Sandifer

and

Robert Sandifer

I was told that Lucy died when lighting hit a tree and the tree fell on her.

and also Martha seemed to be the closet to Nancy Sandifer.

Martha married William Henderson (Baptist Minister). I am told that Floyd was also a Minister?

He could be from Tennesee, Kentucky, Virgina or in the Carolinas. I am not sure where!!

However, I know when he died (Floyd), he did have some money and land and Martha got 'screwed' over, the siblings only gave her something like $200.00 and apparently in the will she was suppose to get more.

I am also assuming that Martha was born in the 1880s because my great grandmother was born in 1913 and she wasn't the first born...

Re: Floyd Sandifer and Lucy (Jones) Sandifer

I found Floyd Sandifer in Claiborne County, Tennesse in the census records from 1870 to 1920, under various spellings. The 1870 census shows him in the household of Rev. Robert Sandifer, probably his father. The various censuses are pretty consistent that he was born 1857/1858. He was most likely born in VA...the census records vary, sometimes saying VA, sometimes TN. Floyd was on the 1880 census with wife Lucy and one daughter, Lizzie. The spelling that year was Sanafor.

Lucy evidently died before 1900 when Floyd's wife is shown as Lina/Linna. The 1910 census said they had been married 11 years and was 2nd marriage for both of them.

Martha was not living with him on the 1900 census, but there was a 12 year old Martha B. Sandifer/Sandefur in the household of Robert and Martha Plank, and Martha B. Sandifer was listed as a niece. William and Nancy Sandifer were living with Floyd and Lina/Linna...their ages show they were from Floyd's first marriage, therefore the children of Lucy instead of Lina.

From various census records, the Rev. Robert Sandifer, born ca 1830 in Virginia, appears to be the son of William Sandifer born ca 1805 in Virginia.

Contact me direct if you want me to send you all the census data I accumulated.

Tarney Smith
mtss915@sbcglobal.net

SC, VA, Sandifer/Sandefur/Sanderfer/Sandiford, etc. and DNA Revelations

It is most interesting to see the DNA results of Sandifers/Sandefurs/Sanderfer and Sandiford, and it is gratifying to see the DNA project growing.

My ancestor is Peter Sandifer, 1771-1844 MS. So far, two of his descendants have joined the DNA project. Their results show that Peter Sandifer, born 1771, who went from Barnwell, SC > LA, 1812 > Pike, MS, 1820, is not in any way related to Johnson P. Sandifer, who also went from Barnwell, SC to Mississippi, or to John D. Sandifer who went from Barnwell/Orangeburg SC to Mississippi. He is also probably not related to any of the other Sandifers who went from Barnwell, SC > Mississippi around 1820, plus or minus (William Nightingale, Joseph, Joshua, Benjamin and William Yarborough Sandifer), but DNA results from a direct male descendant from their lines are needed to be certain. (My feeling is, their DNA would show them related to Johnson P. and John D. Sandifer.)

This came as a big surprise to me, as I am sure it will to many others. Before these DNA results, I thought all of the Barnwell/Orangeburg, SC > Mississippi Sandifers were related in some way.

It is also interesting to see that Peter Sandifer, 1771-1844 MS, is related to Sandifords of Lancashire, England. WOW! There is a common ancestor back there somewhere. Hope we can find out who he was.

The DNA results show Johnson P. Sandifer of Barnwell > Mississippi is related to Abraham Sandefur who died in Chester County, SC c1810 (many of his descendants use the spelling of Sanderfer), and that Johnson P. Sandifer, John D. Sandifer and Abraham Sandefur are related to Sandifers/Sandefurs of Virginia > Kentucky > westward, and also to Robert Sandefur who went from NC > LA, c1800. All of these men have a common ancestor...maybe only a generation or two back from where their paper trails are stuck.

The DNA results can be seen from the link that follows; the RESULTS page will show the kit numbers and the lineages of the DNA donors, plus lots of interesting info about DNA; the YRESULTS page shows the actual DNA results so far available for the nine members who have submitted DNA samples:
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/SANDIFERDNAProject/

To help break down the brick walls we all have, I hope more Sandifers/Sandefurs/Sandifords/Sanderfers/Sanderfords, etc., will consider joining this DNA project. If you need help to join the project or have questions, please get in touch.

Tarney Sandifer Smith
mtss915@sbcglobal.net

William Nightingale Sandifer ca 1760 - 1850 MS

In some of the following records, there may be clues to help determine parents/ancestors of William Nightingale Sandifer (born c1760, died 1850).

I am attaching a map showing the adjoining boundaries of the counties of York County, Elizabeth City County, and Warwick County, Virginia, as they used to be. The map is from a 1907 topographical map (reprinted 1932). Elizabeth City County and Warwick County are now extinct. After a great deal of research of 17th and 18th century land patents, I feel certain that Sandifers, Youngs, etc. were located very near the convergence of these three Virginia counties. There are Sandifer/Sandever/Sandiford (etc.) records in all three counties.
------------
From Charles Parish Records, York County, Virginia, 1648-1789, Ancestry.com:

Ann Nightingale, b. Jan. 11, 170(9), was the daughter of Charles Nightingale by Ann.
Nightingale Young, b. April 19, 1728, was the son of John Young by Ann.

(This suggests that Ann Nightingale, b. 1709 was the daughter of Charles and Ann Nightingale and that she married John Young before 1728, when she would have been 18 or 19 years old, and they were parents of a son, Nightingale Young. They probably also had other children not shown in the transcribed and published versions of the Charles Parish records.)
---------
From Wills and Administrations of Elizabeth City County, Virginia 1688-1800, Ancestry.com:

[p. 108] Young, John. Estate appraised by William Smelt, Francis Mallory and Samuel Tompkins. June 17, 1741. Dower allotted the widow Ann Young. Audited by John Lowry, William Parsons and William Allen. July 17, 1745. Book 1737-49, p. 104 & 207.
---------
From COLONIAL FAMILIES OF YORK COUNTY, VIRGINIA, VOL. 1, BY Christopher DeMarco, Ph.D, Colonial Roots, Lewes, Delaware, 2006, p. 150:

"In the action of trespass between Edward Tabb gent plt and Wm Sandifer Junr and Anne his wife executrix of John Young decd defs, the plt failing to prosecute, ordered that the suit be dismissed and the plt to pay them their costs. {YCWI 1740-1743:242}"
---------
Apparently, the widow Anne (Nightingale ?) Young married William Sandifer, Junr. by 1743. It seems unlikely she would have been the mother of William Nightingale Sandifer, who was born c1760, as she would have been 51 years old by that time (if my scenario is correct)....but, possibly, either together or separately, this pair were grandparents of William Nightingale Sandifer.
---------
They and/or their children (his, hers and theirs??), may have gone on to Brunswick/Lunenburg/Mecklenburg County, VA, where a William Sandifer is on the 1748 tithe lists with John Young living with him (perhaps a step-son/step-brother??). The 1749, 1750, 1751, 1752, tithe lists also have John and/or Samuel Young living with William Sandifer (of various spellings). On some of the tithe list, they were next door to Hugh and Thos. Norvil. The 1764 Lunenburg tithe lists show William Sandefur and son, William Jr; James Sandefur and son William (that makes three Williams); Elizabeth Sandefur and son Philip.

Land records show that William Sandifer was located in that part of Lunenburg County (formed out of Brunswick County) that became Mecklenburg County in 1764/65. His 1750 Colonial Patent was for "400 acres on the upper side of Allens Creek." There are quite a few Lunenburg deeds involving Wm Sandifer (or multiple William Sandifers). He was shown either buying, selling, as an adjoining property owner or as a witness. There was a 1761 deed where Samuel Young, William Sandefur and Peter Sandefur were among the witnesses. As early as 1753, Elizabeth Sandifer, wife of William, is shown relinquishing her dower rights. (This seems very likely to be Elizabeth Norvell Sandifer, daughter of Hugh Norvell, per his 1759 Lunenburg County will).

In October 1765, William Sandifer and Elizabeth Sandifer sell 200 acres on the Long Branch of Allens Creek. (Mecklenburg County, Virginia, Deed Book 1, p. 190)
----------
"Coincidentally", the next year, on October 17, 1766, a survey/plat is recorded for William Sandifer in what becomes Chester County, South Carolina. In 1772, Phillip Sandifer had land surveyed and platted in what became Chester County, SC. William, Phillip and Peter Sandifer continue to show up in Chester County, South Carolina records (as well as other Sandifers, including William Nightingale Sandifer). Phillip, Peter, and Abraham Norvell Sandifer (middle name spelled out in his 1809 will), as well as others, had South Carolina Rev. War Account Audited files.

So, we have William, Phillip and Peter Sandifer that turn up in Lunenburg/Mecklenburg, Virginia records (associated with "Youngs" that likely connect to Nightingales) up to 1765, and then we have the same names turning up in Chester County, South Carolina records prior to the Revolutionary War. Phillip is a less-common name amongst the early Sandifers, so I think is a flag that says "sit up and take notice."

The 1790 Chester District, SC census has "W. Night Sandifur" (which I think we will all agree is William Nightingale Sandifer), where he is living alone, 1 male over 16 years of age; the 1800 Chester District census with Nightengale Sandiford (with 4 males under ten years). By 1810, he is in Barnwell, County, SC census. Additional Chester, Barnwell and Mississippi land and census records show he went from Chester>Barnwell and on to Mississippi between 1820 and 1824.

Tarney Sandifer Smith
mtss915@sbcglobal.net
Does anyone know what happened to Robert Edwards. Before Annie Sandifer Trickett Died she gave Robert Edwards (Benton AR) her research and they were working on a volume 2. His email is no longer working and it appears that he has not been to these message boards in a couple of years.
Sure would like to get a look at those records.
Ron

William Sandifer, Pike Co., Mississippi

Hi,
I am looking for information on William Sandifer born before 1825 who had a daughter Sarah b 1839 in Pike Co, MS. He possibly married Elizabeth from MS or LA. I am hitting a wall due to my lack of Sarah's info. Sarah married Francis MArion Bardwell from MS and they later moved to LA. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Thanks.

Birth Date of George Sandifer (d: 1917)

Hey All!
I'm a descendant of some Sandifers in Kentucky. I'm having a hard time reconciling some information.

In the one world tree, it has a George S Sandifer (b: 8 nov 1861 - d: 7 apr 1917)

http://trees.ancestry.com/owt/person.aspx?pid=13161837

who's son is George W. Sandifer (b: 27 Jun 1882 - d: 18 Jul 1947).

but the death certificate that I find for George S Sandifer (d: 7 apr 1917) clearly shows a birth of 15 mar 1830:
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&db=KY...

Now, my cousin is thinking that there is a George S Sandifer inbetween those two:
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&db=KY...

I'm soooo confused. :(

George W. Sandifer (b: 27 Jun 1882 - d: 18 Jul 1947) is my Great Grandfather so this is somewhat close to me and I'd like to figure this out.

Sorry if this is obscure, I'm fairly new to this. :)
Sandifers of Barnwell, Chester and Fairfield Counties, SC
William Nightingale Sandifer apparently left Chester County, SC around 1804/1805 and went to Barnwell County, SC and then on to MS around 1823. I think there is a strong connection between the Barnwell County Sandifers and the Chester/Fairfield County Sandifers. I have accumulated many of the deed and probate records of Sandifers in the Barnwell records through LDS microfilm and the generosity of other researchers who have copied records directly from Barnwell County Courthouse and sent them to me, more than what Annie Sandifer Trickett included in her book. I am currently still working on the Barnwell Courthouse records. I am willing to share what I have found with others who are researching these Sandifers.

I would very much like to communicate with anyone researching the Sandifers of Chester, Fairfield and Barnwell Counties, South Carolina.

Please get in touch.

I am a descendant of Peter Sandifer, b. 1771.

Tarney Sandifer Smith
mtss915@sbcglobal.net
