SANDIFORDS in England and elsewhere

Sandifords (and spelling variations) appear in English records from very early, such as:

Richard de Sandiforth in 1286, Robert, Thomas and Henry de Sandeford, 1328 - 1378, and many more of Sandeforth, Sandeforthe, Sandeford variations through the 15th, 16th and 17th century, as well as later and to the present day.

Parish records and IGI files show a great many Sandifords (and spelling variations) in England by the mid 1600s, with the largest portion of them being in Lancashire, although they were also solidly represented in many other English counties as well.

I would like to learn more about how all these Sandifords connect, and be able to make some guesses about who the original immigrants were; do any descend from Vikings? Did any of them come in with William the Conqueror or sometime after the Norman Conquest. The spellings Sandiforth, Sandeforthe, etc., preceded by "de" suggest they may have come from Normandy.

(see Wikipedia, Norman Conquest of England "....Some of these Norman magnates used their original French-derived names, with the prefix 'de,' meaning they were lords of the old fiefs in France, and some instead dropped their French names and took their names from new English holdings.")

Lancashire Parish records show several "Sandiforths" who were weavers:

23 Aug 1612 (buried) Adam Sonndiforthe of Moston, lynenwebstr
25 Jan 1656 (buried) James s. of Richard Sowndiforth, woolen webster
1656 (born) John Soundiforth s. of Humphri wolline webstar born 23 Feb 1656
1658 (born) William s. of James Sowndiforth wollin webstar born 11 Mar 1658

Did some of the early "Sandifords" come in as weavers from Flanders?
From: http://www.bartleby.com/65/we/weaving.html:
"Flemish weavers brought to England by William the Conqueror and later by Queen Elizabeth I [1533-1602]gave a great impetus to the craft there, and Lancashire became an important center."

DNA results on the Sandifer/Sandiford, and other spelling variants, DNA project (most, not all, of the current participants are from USA descendants) show there were at least two entirely different unrelated groups. The paper trails on the USA "Sandifers" lead us to believe they all descend from Sandifords/Sandifers, etc. who immigrated to the Colony of Virginia in the mid 1600s from England. The DNA results for two of the USA Sandifer participants show a relationship to a Sandiford participant whose ancestors were in Lancashire from mid 1500s to early 1900s.

DNA results will probably not answer my above questions with any precision, but they can help show migratory patterns. One group positively shows an early ancestor in Lancashire, England. Whether the other group also came out of Lancashire or some other area of England is at this time unknown. Perhaps all the Lancashire Sandifords came from one ancestor, perhaps not. More DNA partipants and results would help make this determination.

The "Sandifer and variants" DNA project results can be viewed at the link below....there is lots of interesting DNA information on the RESULTS page (which would apply to Sandifords/Sandifers etc. from all over), and the actual DNA results can be viewed on the YRESULTS page. This is open to the public and can be viewed without a subscription or any other requirements. There are links on the left side to join the group, which is open to any spelling variation of any locality. (The DNA tests are less expensive when ordered through a group project, and are currently being offered at a sale price.)
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/SANDIFERDNAProject/

It would be most interesting if more "Sandifords/Sandifers, etc." would have their DNA would join this project, have their DNA tested and see where in England or any other locality they were/are located. It might also help many of us break down our brick walls.

If you have any questions about the DNA Project, joining the project, or even "Sandiford" questions, please get in touch. I'll answer the best I can.

Tarney (Sandifer) Smith
mtss915@sbcglobal.net
Henry Sandiford, East Coker, Somerset

Hello

Does anyone have a Henry Sandiford born in East Coker or Hardington Mandeville, Somerset, in their tree? I am guessing his DOB would be c.1798.

My GGGG Grandmother was Harriet Rendall born c.1820 in Hardington Mandeville. Her father was Henry Sandiford (a weaver). However, I can find no record of her birth, or of a female Rendall marrying a Henry Sandiford (although one did marry a George or John Sandiford). This makes me wonder if Harriet was illegitimate.

If you have the Sandifords of this area in your tree I would be grateful to hear from you.

Many thanks

My mother's maiden name was Sandiford. Her father was named Ben, and had an uncle named Owen, Owen lived in the Boston area. My grandfather grew up in upstate New York but moved later to West Springfield MA. My mother once took me to the New York rural cemetary where SAndifords were buried but I cannot remember the town name.Perhaps if you tell me the town you may know I could remember. Ben died at 54 in 1932 I believe. He was the oldest of nine children, he put Owen through Yale and several others in the family also but did not go to college himself. Email me if you have more info, I think our families are related

Thomas Sandover apperas in the 1851 census for East Chinnock as a wheelwright in Yeovil Road with Emma(50), Samuel (17 wheelwright), Thomas (14) and Harry (9) all born in East Chinnock (ref HO 107/1929 folio 225). In the 1851 census there are a number of Sandifords in Somerset in Martock, Middle Chinnock, Hardington Barwick and East Coker. The family existed in Somerset as far back as 1576 and probably a lot earlier. They are probably connected with Sandifords in Exeter in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Sorry, some of the info above is incorrect. I was looking at the wrong James. James, the father of James Henry, is shown in the 1790 SC census in the south part of Orangeburg District with his family and 1 slave. Here he secured several grants totaling 800 acres near the present Bamberg Cty., where he is shown in the 1800 census. He had died by 1810 census in the present Bamberg Cty.

I apologize for the incorrect info previous to this.

Clara Sandiford married Cooper James Noble, who was from Droylsden, Manchester. They had 4 children: Naomi,Thomas James (Jim), Harriet (Matty) and Clara. Naomi was born in 1920 and is my great grandmother. Clara then moved from Manchester in about 1945ish to Whitworth, Nr Rochdale, Lancashire. By then she had split up from Cooper. She later married James Royston from Newcastle Upon Tyne I think that was b4 1960. More to post at a later date.
