Burial location of Austin, Sarah Sandridge and Lucy J. Sandridge (Snead) of Albemarle County, Virginia

I'm looking for the burial location/cemetery of Austin and Sarah Sandridge of Albemarle County, Virginia. Sarah was born in 1813 and died in 1880 and I don't know Austin's birth and death dates. My Sister and I are looking for the burial location of their Daughter, Lucy J. Sandridge born in 1837 and died in 1927. She was married to John Snead who is part of our family tree. We know where John is buried, but she is not located there, so we are taking a shot at maybe she was buried where her parents were located. Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Bill and Vickie

Appears in "The Wapanucka Press" 5 May 1904, Wapanucka, Johnston County, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma

NEGRO FARMER SHOT

Two Colored Men Get Into Quarrel Over Stock

Holdenville: Albert Murphy a colored farmer living seven miles north of Wewoka, in the Seminole Nation, shot and killed Algy Sandridge, also colored. The shooting resulted from an altercation over some horses and mules of Murphy’s which Sandridge had taken up. Sandridge was shot with a shotgun and died instantly. Word of the affair was carried to Wewoka, and United States Marshal John Cordell immediately took the trail of the murderer, and after a hard chase succeeded in capturing him twelve miles north of Wewoka at midnight of the same day.

The was a man in Albemarle Co., VA named Eli Austin, and he was on at least one court record with some members of the Sandridge family there. Could his daughter or sister have married a Sandridge man, and could that couple have had Austin Sandridge (who had Eli B. Sandridge)?

There was an Eli B. (Banton) Davidson in my family (born late 1840s), and his mother was Vitula Monroe (Sandridge) Davidson of Cumberland Co., VA. This Davidson family had been in Albemarle Co., VA until my 5th ggf, Hezekiah Davidson, moved to Cumberland Co., VA around 1760. There was a Susan Sandridge (age 47) in Vitula's (age 20) home in Cumberland in 1850 (per the census), and I suppose that Susan could have been Vitula's mother.

Dear Bill,
I just answered your other message about the Browne family, and now I see you have Sandridges in your line too! We must be related somehow! If I have any info that would help you, I'll be glad to share.

My Sandridges came mostly from the areas of White Hall, Augusta, and Albemarle. I've done a lot of research on this line. The Cumberland area was where some of my Browne family was from - I don't know about Sandridges being from there. I don't recognize the Sandridge names you gave me, but I'll see if I have anything that would help. Do you live in Virginia?

Betty

Re: Stephen C Sandridge

There was a John Sandridge who was in Cumberland Co., VA by at least the 1760s. He signed a religious petetion then, as did my 5th ggf and 4th ggf, Hezekiah Davidson and Philemon Davidson. It appears that John Sandridge had a son named John E. Sandridge, and this son married a daughter of Philemon Davidson's.

My 2nd ggm was Vitula Monroe Sandridge. She married Joseph Cornelius Davidson in Cumberland Co., VA in the 1840s. I do not know how she was related to the above Sandridge men. Hezekiah Davidson had been in Albemarle Co., VA in the 1740s, and he moved to Cumberland around 1760. He and John Sandridge must have been close in the 1760s, since they signed right above one another (and Philemon signed right below his father Hezekiah). Do you have any information on this Sandridge line in Cumberland Co., VA? I wonder if they were out of Albemarle?

The oldest son of Joseph and Vitula (Sandridge) Davidson was named Eli Banton Davidson, and I have no idea if "Banton" came from the Sandridge side of the family. There were Bantons in the Cumberland/Buckingham area, but I know of no earlier Banton/Davdson marriage that could have resulted in the use of that name for a son. Thanks!

Sandridge Family in Cumberland County, VA

Does anyone have any info on the Sandridge family in the Cumberland/Buckingham County, VA area? My 2nd ggf, Joseph Cornelius Davidson, married Vitula Monroe Sandridge on 13 Aug 1846 in Cumberland County, VA. Living in their household was Thomas Sandridge (age 8) and Susan Sandridge (age 47; I guess she could have been Vitula's mother). Joseph C. Davidson had an aunt named Polly Davidson, and she married John E. Sandridge in 1811 in Cumberland County, VA. Other records in Cumberland show that Beverley J. Sandridge married Elizabeth Holt in 1807, and Zachariah Sandridge married Susan Birch in 1829.

Joseph and Vitula named their first child Eli Banton Davidson. Were there any Eli or Banton Sandridges (I know that there was a Banton family in the area)? Their second child was Thomas Archer Davidson. Joseph had a younger brother named Thomas, but the only Archers I can find are a couple of Archer Davidsons in Charlotte County, VA (who may have been related to Joseph, based on a few clues). Joseph's grandmother on his father's side was Mary, but her last name is not known. It is possible that some of these given names came from her family. Joseph's father was Reuben F. Davidson (died 1846) and his grandfather was Philemon Davidson (died 1810). Joseph's great-grandfather was Hezekiah Davidson (died 1793).

Any/all help will be appreciated.
Jean

Hello and thank you very much for the information, even though it has taken me a year to "find it and respond back".

I am very appreciative of the information, however now there seems to be a conflict. I received information in late Dec 2000, a few months before yours was posted in Mar 2001, indicating a slight difference in the marriages. Your post indicates Eliza Jane LEE was married to Stephen's brother Robert prior to her marriage to Stephen. I have nothing to dispute this.

data received from the LATHAM line of the seems to indicate

Stephen was married to Eliza, who died between 1864 & 1874.
Stephen then married Alice A Davis.

so far so good, however,

Stephen died probably before 1900, Alice A DAVIS Sandridge then went on to marry an un-named brother of Stephen and produce four more children, Beulah, Annie Ruth, Algie and Lydge.

Alice lived her last years, known as Mrs. A. A. Sandridge. I have a picture of her stone if you would like a copy.

My question is died both wives marry Sandridge brothers twice or has something, somewhere, over time become confused.

Second cousins that lived in Cooper related the same story about Alice a few years ago, but at that time I had no idea where she fit into the picture at all.

Thanks again and I look forward to further research on this.

Jim

(b. ca 1897), married William E. ESTES on 15 Apr 1917 in Albemarle County
* Edna M. (b. 1899), m. Kenneth KIRBY on 31 Dec 1919 in Albemarle Co.
* Lydia Thomas (b. 30 Dec 1901, d. 15 Feb 1974), m. James M. (“Max”) HENWOOD on 13 Jun 1922 in Albemarle Co.
(Max died around 1926 & Lydia married Charles Benjamin Eagle GRIMM)
* Guy D. (b. ca 1905), m. Gladys MADISON on 28 May 1926 in Albemarle Co.

In 1910, William, Margaret & kids lived on Keswick Rd. in Albemarle County, VA (Enumeration Dist. 1). Margaret died around 1917. William then married Ethel L. HENWOOD HARRIS on 01 May 1918 in Albemarle County, VA. Helen , George and Olive SANDRIDGE were their kids. I have no info on them.

I understand from my family that Ethel & Max were siblings. Ethel m. William T. Sandridge & Max m. William’s daughter, Lydia. They also had a sister, Alice HENWOOD, who m. Gale (sp?) CORKER & had no kids. And Albert “Bert” F. HENWOOD who m. Emma Gladys NEWTON on 15 May 1926 in City of Charlottesville. When he died in late 1953, his spouse was listed as Mary MOORE.

If anyone has any info on William T. or Margaret SANDRIDGE, their siblings or parents, grandparents, etc. please e-mail me at BethMail@go.com or post here.
Hi Kathy,
I agree that there probably is a very strong link between Mary Etta & James Sandridge. Did you have the parents' name for James? Date of birth? Colusa is not a large community, even today. Have you come up with the name Davis having anything to do with Sandridge. One of the Sandridge siblings got married at the "home of Edward Davis", who was Mary Etta's husband (my great grandfather). Have to get to work. Won't be online for a couple of days, but give me a shout via e-mail, if you so desire. northstategal@earthlink.net
Jean

Hi Kathy,
The parents of Austin, Armous & Mary Etta are Eli Sandridge & Martha Wood. There were at least five other siblings, none of whom was named James. However, a distant cousin I met on the net thinks there were ten children, which means there could be a James in the two I don't know about yet. I might even have the info, but am in the process of moving, so things are not exactly where they should be, if you know what I mean. Next time I get up to Colusa on a weekday, will stop at the courthouse & see if I can find anything for you. Meantime, keep in touch.
"Jean"

He lived most of his later life in Roanoke and Salem, Va. He was married to Mae Brown Patterson.

I'm told that James William Sandridge's father was George N.
Jean, I am looking for information on Kate Morgan McCutchen, born in Jackson County, AL on March 8, 1864. From all records, we believe she married your George W. Sandridge -born in 1854 in Grundy, TN. His first wife was a Willmon & she died. I believe Aunt Kate to be his third wife (I think he had 4) in Delta County. I know she died but do not know where - assume it was in Delta County - either Enloe or Cooper, TX. She is a sister to our grandfather Joseph Macklin McCutchen who migrated from Jackson County, AL to Delta county, Texas and married Ibbie Minera Stockton. Her mother was Nancy Caroline Willmon who married William Patterson Stockton. We only know her name, date of birth, have a picture of her and an autograph book she had her friends write in about 1888 when she evidently moved to Delta county where her bother was. Do you have any more dates regarding where she might have died or if she had died in childbirth etc? Sylvester Pinkney Willmon and Minerva Word have several researchers working on their line.on their line. Would appreciate anything you might have.Sincerely, Mary McCutchen

Hello,
I am also researching SANDRIDGE family from Missouri who ended up in Colusa, California. My ancestors are James and Sara ROYSTER SANDRIDGE who are found on the 1900 Henry Co. Missouri, Tebo Twp., Calhoun City, census. They have been married 10 years, have had 5 children, 3 still living. James was born in Missouri, father b. Mo., mother b. Illinois. Sara was born in Illinois, father b. Ga., mother b. Ga. Their children are Roy, b. July 1891, James F. b. May 1894, and George b.1896. Any connection? These SANDRIDGE's must be related somehow as they ended up in the same small community in Cal.? Could James be the brother of your Mary? Thank you!

A few years later my father married my mother. Other than this little bit of info I don't know much and Ron doesn't remember much else. He just ask me that if I was doing our family tree, would try and locate her. I told him I would. Ron is my oldest brother, who I adore. If finding anything out about his mother makes him happy, that's all I want. I'm sure he would like to see her or at least speak with her. He has always felt a void, not knowing anything about his mom. If you can help we would be truly greatful.

Re: Stephen C Sandridge

Hi,
I believe I'm related to this line. My great grandfather was George Nicholas Sandridge (1856 - 1930). His parents were Nicholas Sandidge (born 1803 - died 1879) and Mary Alice Alford, from Albemarle and Augusta Counties in Va. George N. Sandridge and wife Alice lived on a farm in Crimora, Va., where they raised 15 kids! Whew!

I'm trying to find out who Nicholas' father was. Back in the 1950's, my father (James Sandridge) was told by a genealogist doing Sandridge research that she thinks Nicholas Sandidge's father was William Sandridge (born 1780). She was connected to people working with Professor Dickinson, who did a lot of research on the Sandridge/Sandidge line before his death in 1915. The chapter about the Sandidge family in the book, "Tyler's Quarterly - Genealogies of Virginia Families" was written from his notes. I was told a few years ago that Nicholas' father might have been Stephen Sandridge instead of William.

Do you have any info in your notes about who the children of William and Stephen were? Specifically I'm looking for Nicholas. If I could just find out who Nicholas' father was, I believe I could easily trace the lineage on back to England, as there has been a good deal of research on William Sandridge (Sandidge).
Thanks for any info you can give me!
Best regards,
Betty (Sandridge) Johnson

I am trying to find infromation on Burla Sandidge from Rockbridge Co., VA or near-by county. She was related in some way to the Nicelys of Rockbridge Co. Family legend had her as the wife of Andrew Jackson Nicely and the mother of William Edward Nicely. I have found no proof of a marriage and believe that his wife Melinda Saunders was William's mother. At least one member of the family is named after Burla Sandidge. I would appreciate any information about her. She would have lived around mid 1800s to early 1900s.

Hi Betty,

My Sandridge line also comes from VA. My ggg grandparents, Austin Sandridge (b 1795, d ca 1854) and Ann Hall (b 1798, d 1857) were married in Orange, VA on 1/11/1816. Ann's father was John Hall and his will was proved in Abemarle County in 1847. I haven't been able to determine who Austin's parents were. How does your Sandridge line go?

Jack R. Sandridge
