My paternal grandmother, Zora Louise Sandy b. 16 May 1911 Arkansas d. 21 April 1997. She married Willie Frank Wallace 16 April 1933, Crittenden, Arkansas. They had two children together: (my dad) William Richard Wallace b. 06 March 1935 d. 08 July 1989. Their other son is still living (name withheld)—both boys were born in Memphis Tennessee.
Zora’s mother and father were: James Robert Sandy b. 14 Nov 1884 in Arkansas, d. June 1975 in Memphis Tenn.; her mother was Nettie Elizabeth Henshaw (last name could be spelled differently), Nettie’s birth is 06 Aug 1886, death 13 Dec 1958 in Memphis Tenn. James and Nettie’s children are: Andrew H b.19 Sept. 1906-d. 05 April 1992 Tennessee, Hazel b. 1913-d. unknown; Arthur b. 27 Nov. 1915-d. Jan 1987 Tenn.; and Melvin b. 16 June 1921-d. 09 Jan 1970. All children were born in Arkansas.
James Robert Sandy’s mother and father are: Thomas Henry Sandy b. approx 1858 Arkansas-d. 1897 (unknown place of death); Lucinda R. Fike b. 11 Jan 1865 Alabama-d. 10 April 1964 Arkansas. I do not have any information regarding any other children other than James Robert for this couple.
Thomas Henry Sandy’s Parents are: Joseph P Sandy b. 1838 d. 1860 and Sarah Ellen Herron b. Sept 1838 d. 1918. Again here, other than Thomas Henry, I have no other children listed.
Joseph P. Sandy’s parents are: Henry Sandy b. 1803 NC d. 1874 Arkansas and Shu Hursaid Wright b. 1814 Tenn. d. aft. 1900 Arkansas. Their children are: Nancy L Sandy, Joseph P, Sarah S, Margaret E, William H, and Mary A.
All of my information has come from family bibles: Willie Frank Wallace’s Masonic Bible, Kenneth Wallace’s personal bible, and Glenn Wallace’s personal bible. Additionally, I have censuses, marriage records for Henry Sandy and Shu Hursaid Wright Lawrence Tenn., and Zora Sandy and Willie Wallace Arkansas; and grave locations for the Zora and her parents. So I am inclined to believe that all above information is accurate.
My problem and confusion is this: the most consistent piece of information about the Sandy’s is that they originated out of Ireland; however, there were remarks made about England. Also, Shu Hursaid Wright was supposed to be Native American, possibly Cherokee. There is a folk tale that a male child from the sandy side was kidnapped by native Americans along the Tennessee River, but I use the term kidnapped with caution, since there is no data to confirm this. I am inclined to believe that there was formal integration into a native tribe, and a formal marriage that resulted with sandy children. There is no doubt when I look at photos of my father, two of my brothers and grandmother (Zora), that there is Native American in the mix—the features are powerful. In most of the posting that I have come across regarding the Sandy’s mention the name Joseph Sandy; I am not sure that this person is my person and/or if this is a middle name or a first name. I am hoping that someone can provide information regarding children, wives, dates of births, marriages, etc for this family—the usual information. Please help. I can be contacted at rmadron@gmail.com. I will be happy to share any information that I have saved to disk. Thanks Renee
