Thank you so much for your reply. It was very helpful. Do you have any info on Asheherzade's or Henry's death or where they are buried? I assume in Ark. Also do you have a list of their children's names? I have the 1860 Ark census that list Henry, age 56- Asheherzade,age46- William,age15- Mary,age 12-and Thomas, age 8. On the 1870 Census, Asheherzade is not listed. So I assume that she died between 1860 and 1870. The 1870 Ark census lists Henry, age 68-Sarah,age4-and Mary Burkett,age 15. Thank you, Debra

My g.g.g.g-Aunt was Asheherzade Wright who married Henry Sandy in Lawrence Co Tn. She was the daughter of Perrin M Wright, Sr and Mary Ann Horton. They are listed on the 1840 and 1850 Lawrence Co Tn Census. They moved to Ark (Benton Co) Fulton Ark by 1860 and are also listed on the 1870 Ce nsus there. My research is aimed mainly for Perrin Wright but are interested in Henry and Asheherzade Wright as well. I noticed as a neighbor there was a Joshaua? Monroe and Tilda SANDY were the parents of my paternal grandfather, James Lenard (sp?) SANDY, b. Mar 1875 d. ca 1942 Franklin Co AL. James m. Myrtle/Mrytle Lou JOHNSON, b. ca 1875-1885, d. 1964 Franklin Co AL. James and Myrtle SANDY were m. 14 Oct 1900 Lawrenceburg TN.
It is thought that the parents of Joseph SANDY were Thomas SANDY, b. ca 1775-1778 NC, and Margaret (Margot) WILLIAMS Sandy, b. NC. This has not been documented that I know about.

Hi cousins,

Perhaps you’ve been watching as I have a PBS series about the genealogy of African Americans. Last night’s episode concerned genetic genealogy. Focusing on the mixed-race host of the show, Henry Louis Gates, Jr, it was revealed through a YDna test that his paternal ancestry goes back to King Niall of the Nine Hostages, the warrior/King who began the Ui Niall, aka the O’Neill clan. (There is a DNA project being done in Ireland that has tested Irish men for descendancy from or relationship to King Niall. It has been determined that 1 in 5 male Irish citizens carry his gene and that there are at least 3 million men living today who are his descendants.) This information prompted me to Google around to find the values of King Niall’s YDna markers, and I did locate them. Lo and behold, except for 3 one-step deviations (an entirely acceptable amount after 1500 years) my father’s YDna matches King Niall’s! I believe that if other Sandy men would have their YDna tested, they would find they are King Niall’s descendants too. King Niall has now surpassed Ghengis Khan in the estimated number of descendants. (Go team!)

Whereas this discovery identifies his Irish roots, it does not invalidate the likelihood of his English ancestry. The Ui Niall populated the west coast of Northern England too…which was the seat of the 13th century Sandys family. The House of Windsor also has Ui Niall ancestry.
(By the way, looking online at the Sorenson DNA project I found a 19th century American immigrant named Horace Albert Sandy who was descended from a man named John Sandy b. 1824 from Norfolk England. His DNA is also a close match to my father’s and King Niall’s too.)

My father passed away in September, so I’m not able to share this amusing news with him. But be sure to read about King Niall…I know you will find the mythology surrounding this man to be very interesting!

HENRY SANDY was born 1802 in North Carolina, USA, and died 1874 in Arkansas. He married ASHEHERZADE WRIGHT 25 Nov 1831 in Lawrence, Tennessee, USA, daughter of PERRIN WRIGHT and MARY HORTON. She was born 1814 in Lawrence, Tennessee, USA, and died Aft. 1900 in Arkansas.

The 1850 Lawrence Co, TN census, 3rd Civil District, shows Henry Sandy, 47, a farmer with $1500 real property; Asheherzade, 36; Elizabeth J., 14; Joseph T., 12; Sarah S., 9; Margaret E., 7; William H., 4; and Mary A., 1 year old.

Sandy's Death Certificate and it list his father as Abe Sandy, Every thing else I have came accross states father is Michael Sandy. (Confused here) John Sandy's Grave Stone states he was born in 1872 but death certificate states he was born November 17 1871. John Sandy was born in Braxton County WV and Died in Nicholas County WV.

John Sandy looks to be a good candidate as the age and location fit, as do the familiar surnames in his neighborhood ie McKenny, Fones, Pullin (Pullen), Bartlett, and Rose. In reviewing the census from 1810, 1830, and 1830 it appears that 3 generations of John Sandy lived in the same location. John 1 died in 1770. John 2 b. bef. 1765 and d. bef. 1840. There seems to be a pattern in the naming of the males in this line. The father, Moses, had children, one of whom was named Samuel. Then Sanuel would have a children, one of whom would be named Moses, etc. Any information would be appreciated!!!

Zola V. Higgins

Mrs. Zola Violet Higgins, 70, widow of William (Pat) Higgins Sr. and a resident of 223 Reservoir Street in Harrisonburg, died at 2:05 Monday morning, January 15, 1996, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. She had not enjoyed good health since September.
A daughter of the late George Wilmer and Stella Minnick Sandy, she was born on June 2, 1925, in Augusta County, but lived the majority of her life in Harrisonburg.
Mrs. Higgins had been employed by various poultry plants in the area and prior to her retirement in 1987, had been working for Rocco. She was a member of Union Local 400 and the Harrisonburg Baptist Church and was a faithful bingo player.
On Sept. 21, 1940, she married William Higgins, who preceded her in death on Jan. 21, 1994.
She is survived by four children and their spouses, William (Ted) P. Higgins Jr. and Sandy of Route 6, Harrisonburg, Phyllis A. and Wilbur (Jay) Utt and Lois I. and Ernie Shifflett, all of Harrisonburg and Harry S. (Steve) and Diane Higgins of Elkton. Also surviving are twelve grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; twelve step-great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and one sister, Loretta O. Huffman of Harrisonburg.
Funeral services will be held at eleven o'clock Friday morning from the Chapel of the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home with Dr. Tom Reynolds and Rev. T.W. Johnson officiating. Her body will be cremated following the services and burial will be at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens at a later date.
The members of the family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:00 Thursday evening at the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home. Friends may also call at the home of Lois I. Shifflett, 158 Reservoir Street at any time.

Looking for decendants of the John Sandy and Mara Flanagan family. They were my g-grandparents. My mother was Ruth Ellen Dobbins, of Clarksburg,WV, daughter of Leroy Spencer Dobbins and Lucy Blanche Sandy.
I went to Bridgeport,Wv last April and met my mom's brother, Donald Dobbins and Aunt Ethel. First time I had seen them since the 1960's. They gave me quite a rundown on the dobbins and sandy family. Dobbins side is weird and mostly untalkable. I have questions I hope to find answers for.

The earliest Sandy ancestor of our family that I know of was Neil Sandy who was probably about 60 years old when he died; an educated guess as to when he died would be in the mid-1940s. He married LENO EXO, and they lived and raised their family in Holland, Michigan; their children were ELEANOR and KENNETH R. SANDY (b 1910) It is my understanding that Neil's ancestors were from the Netherlands. I believe there is a possibility that the last name of SANDY may be an Americanized version of a dutch name beginning with Z -- such as Zandee or something like that.
