I related to Joseph P Sandy. I am trying to find out more about his siblings due to his early death at the age of 22. In addition does anyone know if Sheherzade Wright was of Indian descent. I am also trying to find out more about Sarah S Sandy the sister to Joseph Sandy and her Handicap child Mary Burkett from the 1870 census. There is also a family rumor of a Sandy child being found or kidnapped from a river. Does anyone know about this?

In my database I have her name from the Upshur censuses spelled as "Etta Myrtle Sandy," (the "T's" are clearly crossed in the censuses as a child and during her marriage. She did have a half sister named Eddie M. born in 1909 and perhaps changed the spelling of her name from Etta to Edda.)Your great grandmother Edda/Etta Sandy was born the 16th of August 1891 in Sandfork, West Virgina. Her parents were Lafayette W. Sandy b. April 1866 Harrison CO WV and Ella Maria McVaney b. Feb 1860 d bef 1903 (the daughter of Nicholas McVaney and Rebecca Unknown). Her sister was Amy b. Apr 1886, married Mr. Murphy. Her brother was named French b 19 Aug 1883. Lafayette's second wife was Sarah Unknown by whom he had sons Frank b. @1906 and Price b. @ 1915 and daus Mary M b. @1903, and Winnie E b. @1904. EDDIE M. b. 1909, and Myrtle V. b.@1910. Lafayette's parents were George W. Sandy b. May 1837 VA and Elizabeth Unknown. George W's parents were John J. Sandy b. 1813 VA and Julia Ann Middleton (Dau of John B. Middleton). John J. was the son of William Sandy b. 1765 VA and Abigail Warren (dau of John Warren). William was the son of William Sandy b. 1731 VA and Dinah Wood (dau of Samuel Wood.)

RE: James SANDY. I am a descendant of William and Catherine (BECK) SANDY (William was born in N Carolina in 1765) and there is a great book by William Allee SANDY and edited by John V. BECK which has the descendants of William and Catherine in great detail. I looked through the book for James and Mary SANDY, but had no luck, although there were 12 James listed. Therefore it would appear that you are not descended from William and Catherine. We could still have a common ancestor though, because I can't get any farther back in time than William. I have had my Y chromosone of my DNA tested and have markers that I would gladly compare with some other Sandy to see if we had common ancestors. I would especially like to compare with someone who is a documented descendant of the Archbishop of York, Edwin Sandys. Would be happy to hear from you if you care to email me at jmsandy@sbcgobal.net

Amendment: Now that I got myself, John, and this forum all excited about the Niall Dna, in further study this morning I’ve found a few other websites with conflicting information regarding the STR values of this Niall line. So whereas John and my father’s R1b haplogroup is still identified as being a British-Isles-based group, the specific Dna strand of King Niall apparently borders on having too many variants on some specific seldom-mutable markers to be a shoe-in for their ancestry. The only way to prove or disprove the link would be to have more Sandy male descendants tested. How about it fellas?

Sandy YDna

Hi cousins,

Perhaps you’ve been watching as I have a PBS series about the genealogy of African Americans. Last night’s episode concerned genetic genealogy. Focusing on the mixed-race host of the show, Henry Louis Gates, Jr, it was revealed through a YDna test that his paternal ancestry goes back to King Niall of the Nine Hostages, the warrior/King who began the Ui Niall, aka the O’Neill clan. (There is a DNA project being done in Ireland that has tested Irish men for descendancy from or relationship to King Niall. It has been determined that 1 in 5 male Irish citizens carry his gene and that there are at least 3 million men living today who are his descendants.) This information prompted me to Google around to find the values of King Niall’s YDna markers, and I did locate them. Lo and behold, except for 3 one-step deviations (an entirely acceptable amount after 1500 years) my father’s YDna matches King Niall’s! I believe that if other Sandy men would have their YDna tested, they would find they are King Niall’s descendants too. King Niall has now surpassed Ghengis Khan in the estimated number of descendants. (Go team!)

Whereas this discovery identifies his Irish roots, it does not invalidate the likelihood of his English ancestry. The Ui Niall populated the west coast of Northern England too…which was the seat of the 13th century Sandys family. The House of Windsor also has Ui Niall ancestry.
(By the way, looking online at the Sorenson DNA project I found a 19th century American immigrant named Horace Albert Sandy who was descended from a man named John Sandy b. 1824 from Norfolk England. His DNA is also a close match to my father’s and King Niall’s too.)

My father passed away in September, so I’m not able to share this amusing news with him. But be sure to read about King Niall…I know you will find the mythology surrounding this man to be very interesting!

Julie Sandys Bianchi in St Louis
My g.g.g.g-Aunt was Asheherzade Wright who married Henry Sandy in Lawrence Co Tn. She was the daughter of Perrin M Wright, Sr and Mary Ann Horton. They are listed on the 1840 and 1850 Lawrence Co Tn Census. They moved to Ark (Benton Co) Fulton Ark by 1860 and are also listed on the 1870 Ce nsus there. My research is aimed mainly for Perrin Wright but are interested in Henry and Asheherzade Wright as well. I noticed as a neighbor there was a Joshaua? Sandy who lived to Henry and Asheherzade in 1860 in Benton Co Ark. All info welcome loumarie54@bellsouth.net

Thank you so much for your reply. It was very helpful. Do you have any info on Asheherzade's or Henry's death or where they are buried? I assume in Ark. Also do you have a list of their children's names? I have the 1860 Ark census that list Henry, age 56- Asheherzade,age46- William,age15- Mary, age 12-and Thomas, age 8. On the 1870 Census, Asheherzade is not listed. So I assume that she died between 1860 and 1870. The 1870 Ark census lists Henry, age 68-Sarah,age4-and Mary Burkett, age 15. Thank you, Debra

My father, Chester C Sandy, his father Horace G Sandy, his father, Andrew (James/Jackson) Monroe Sandy, his father, Joseph Sandy and possibly Thomas Sandy are my ancestors. My Dad passed some of this down in a bible. My Dad and Grandfather Horace came from Lawrenceburg TN, then on to Jasper AL. We recently went to Lawrenceburg to their Archives and found a Sandy File. I have copies of AJM and Tilda Williams Marriage Certificate and also James Leonard and Johnson Marriage Certificate. We checked out the cemeteries, Westpoint for AJM Sandy and Nelson for Tilda Williams. Could not find as many stones deteriorated ovr the years. You may contact me for further info.

An earlier William Smith married Elizabeth Sandy in Richmond Co., VA on 30 April 1788. They apparently had the later/younger William Smith who married his cousin Peggy Weathers (who was a Sandy descendant, as you show). The above first wedding in 1788 had a John Howe as bondsman, so that older William Smith was, no doubt, associated in some way with the Mrs. Winnie (Howe) Smith who was the witness to the wedding of her daughter who was also named Winnie Smith (the daughter named Winnie Smith married Henry Sisson in Richmond Co., VA in 1787). I am trying to determine the lineage of this Smith family. Comments?

Hi Sandra,

I may have ancestors who are related to your Florence, but I'm not sure. So...

My relatives are mostly from the Ringwood and Fordingbridge area. One of my ancestors came to Newfoundland, and then my grandfather came to the US. It's very possible that one of my ancestors' siblings is related to Florence. There are also many Sandys in Fareham, Hampshire, and they also could be related to Flroence.
As far as I know the first Sandys in Hampshire is Samuel Sandy, who married Mary Wareham on Sept. 9, 1705, in Fordingbridge. Their children are: John, b. 1706, Moses, b. 1708, (may have died 1713), Moses, b. 1713-d. 1719?; William, b.1711-d.1712; William, b. 1720.

John married Mary Elyett, Moses married Jane B(r)own; and William married Christian Collis.

John and Mary had Mary, 1748; Moses and Jane had John, 1739, Mary, 1741, Moses 1744, and Edward, 1753.

William and Christian had Mary 1747, Thomas, 1753, George, 1755, Moses, 1756 or 1758 (my ancestor), and Stephen, 1759.

That's what I have in Hampshire for the Sandys. I have nothing earlier or later.

I have the birth day and month for the children of Samuel and Mary, if you want them. I would be happy to keep in contact with you if you think there's a connection.

Best regards,
Patricia Lobdell
St. Louis, Missouri U S A

Mlinda Baily Shoemaker is either a daugthter or sister to Margaret. She is born the same year Malinda Catherine Bailey dies 1849 sept. I cannot find George Bailey on the census in 1850. Malinda bailey Shoemaker has three kids and is listed as single after 1900. Her brother George is my gggrandad. I have info on other children of Margaret Bailey Shoemaker.
