Re: Sanger: Mary Ann, Anthony,John

Hello. Mary Ann's sister Rose Marie is my great Grandmother. I have an old photo (bad quality) of Anthony (or Grandpa Tony as my Grandma calls him) and Barbara Shriner. I also have copies of each of their obituaries but I don't have much more info than you do. I have a strong sense that Barbara Shriner was raised by folks other than her parents. My Grandma remembers a brother, Henry, staying with them when Barbara died, but I don't know if he was a biological brother or not.
Barbara Ann Shriner b. 1 May 1862 in Elkhart County, Indiana
d. 13 Jan 1940 in Osceola, St. Joseph County, Indiana

Anthony Sanger b. 22 Oct. 1854 in New York
d 4 April 1934 in Osceola, St. Joseph County, Indiana

John Sanger b. Jan 1814 Germany, but it also looks like Alsace
d. 19 Jul 1901 Logansport, Cass County, Indiana

Rosina Sanger b. May 1816 Germany (Alsace?)
d. 23 Dec 1903 in Mishawaka, St. Joseph County, Indiana

I did not know Rosina's maiden name until I saw it on a post you put up. Do you have documentation of her last name or is it family history?
Hope this all helps. If you want I can e-mail you copies of the pic or obits.
Julie

Hi Julie!

Funny my wife's name (She is from this line) is Rose Marie :o)

I would so love to see the photo of Anthony & Barbara! My mother in law would be beside herself if I could show her that! The Obits would also be awesome! If you want to email me at AOL my email addy at AOL is SBATES1970 Did not know if the link would stay if I put the @aol.com after it.

I had found Anthony as a young child in the 1860 New York Census with John & Roseena, but I never got a copy of it, just wrote the information down while visiting the LDS Genealogy Library in Mesa Arizona when I lived there..

I will have to find where I got the Goshorn name, not sure if it was from something I read at the library or something my mother in law had.

I will look for that information so I can write back to you & let you know.

Thanks for your wonderful offer to email copies of the pics and obits.

Have a great evening,
Stephen

Marvin H. Sanger; b. April 12, 1827 in Brooklyn, Connecticut

EVENING POST ANNUAL, 1882
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES
of the State Officers, Representatives in Congress, Governor’s Staff, and Senators and Members of the General Assembly of the State of Connecticut.
Published Annually.
Hartford, Conn.: Evening Post Association. 1882.
Pg. 146

MARVIN H. SANGER, Representative for Canterbury, Windham County:

Of Canterbury, has been before the public in one and another official capacity since 1857, and at a still earlier date filled important local offices with the same fidelity that characterized his administration of trusts conferred by the State. In the year named he was chosen to represent Canterbury in the Legislature, and again in 1860. In 1873 he was elected Secretary of State, and was re-elected to that office in each of the three succeeding years, and left it with a record for executive ability and wise and prudent management. He is a representative Democrat of the progressive type, and is influential in the councils of his party in something more than a local sense. Born in Brooklyn, on April 12, 1827, he is not yet fifty-five years of age, and is engaged in merchandising and farming. In 1852 he was elected Town Clerk and Treasurer of Canterbury, and held the former office continuously until 1864, and still holds the latter, together with those of Judge of Probate and Justice of the Peace.
I have a great uncle, Henry Sanger from the Peoria, Ill area. His brother was my grandfather, Charles and there was a sister,Mary. Henry had only one child, an adopted son. These three siblings may also have had an uncle by the name of Henry, but I'm sure he would have come from the Lynn,Mass. area.

Re: Lewis Sanger or Luther Sanger

I did not have anymore information than that his name was written across the bottom of the photo (it said "Maj. Lew Sanger") and that it was in a very old photo album made up almost entirely of Sangers. I now believe that this may be: Lewis H. Sanger, born 1844. It looks like he was born in Maine.

According to an online image of the United States Army Register of Enlistments 1798 - 1914, Louis [sic] H. Sanger Enlisted 19 Sept 1861 by Lieut. Parker and was discharged 2 Aug 1862.
Born: Bangor, Maine
Age: 19
Occuption: Clerk
Height: 5'11"
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Light
Promoted to 2nd Lieut 17th Infantry, Co. C

I'm still trying to figure out exactly how he's related and if he's the same person that had a wife named Nancy. There's a Nancy Sanger, a widow of a Civil War Union soldier who applied for a widow's pension, application #423791, certificate #278155, who was living in Indiana at the time she applied.

My husband's grandmother was born a Sanger - Emma Belle Sanger. She married a Frank A. Stafford. One of their daughters was (she passed away) my mother-in-law.

I'd be eager to know if you think this is the same Lewis Sanger who was your great grandfather!

Cynthia Brehmer Gooch - Phoenix, AZ

You can e-mail me directly at: cbgooch@cox.net

I do not have proof of this, but this is data I have found. Jonathan Sanger married Lucy Sawyer 24 May 1781 Pomfret, Windham, CT. Jonathan and Lucy are buried Pioneer Cemetery, Canandagua, Ontario Co, NY. Jonathan died 21 Aug 1819 at age 65 and Lucy died 31 May 1846 age 87y-2m-3d. I have a son named Benjamin Sanger born about 1783 CT died 07 Mar 1849 Lenawee Co, MI (Death record in Ontario Co, NY records as native of this county died in Lenawee Co, MI). Wife is Betsey Woodard born about 1786 CT died 29 Apr 1830.
I have several biographies listing Benjamin Sanger and Betsey Woodard. Two daughters are Sarah Jane Sanger born 30 Dec 1816 Canandagua, Ontario Co, NY and Phila Jane Sanger born 03 Sep 1822 Canandagua who was said to be the youngest of nine children. Other children are in question but in 1850 census of Lenawee Co there is a Jonathan born 1818 and Henry P born 1821.
This Jonathan and his wife Jane migrated to Grow, Anoka Co, MN.
Record in Michigan History: Benjamin Sanger an early pioneer of Lenawee Co, native of CT and soldier in war of 1812.
Would like to share my file with any family member. Still searching for more family data. There is also a obituary of Jonathan Sanger listed in Canandagua, Ontario Co, NY which would be very interesting if anyone has it or can get it.

Dick
Good to hear from you. I am not directly related to the Sangers, they have several relatives buried in the same small unmarked ranch cemetary as some of my Burrus and Ishmael relatives on my fathers side of the family. I am a Waldrop by marriage and we don't know much about that side of the family. My husband and son are the last of his family Waldrop line. They came into western Oklahoma from the Texas area. My Ishmael relatives came to the United States prior to the Revolutionary War, three brothers were involved and then spread out to Kentucky and Illinois portions. We think from the Wales area, but aren't for sure.
Have a wonderful day, Sheri

I am not related to the Sanger family, but my great-grandfather (John Ishmael) and his brother-in-law (Jacob Burrus) are burried in the small cemetery on the land with FM Sanger and several others. The family that lives on the land currently would live to have information about the original owner, I believe they are related somehow. I have found and heard some wild stories about the Sanger family ranch. They were an interesting group.

I am looking for any information on the parents and siblings of Archie Truman Sanger. According to the marriage record for him and Amanda Jane Doan(e), he was born in Canada about 1856, but I have found no other record of him. Information we have indicates that he was lost in a lumbering accident, and presumed drowned although no body was recovered. Information that we have also indicates that his mother was an Abbe, although I have no verification of that, either. Has anyone run across his name in their research?

I just ran across this posting. My mother was doing some cleaning, and ran across some papers that her late sister had written up back in 1992. In them, she mentions that an Ira Sanger visited them along with his son Herbert in the early 1950s. My mother was married by then and gone, so she didn't meet them, but Virginia was just a teenager at the time and still at home. The information obtained was that my great-grandfather, Ashley T. Sanger, came to Michigan from Ontario with two brothers, Matthew and Lewis. Ira was Lewis' son. Virgina says that they visited the family several times, and she corresponded with Bert till about 1956, when he was in Korea and she married. She didn't remember if there were other children or not, and she doesn't say anything about Bert being married when she knew him. Have you found any more about Lewis' ancestry since this was posted that you would share?

Looking for information on John Sanger who married Margaret Whitfield in Wiveliscombe Somerset in 1630. He would have been born c1600.

There appear to be a lot of Sangers in Somerset at the time but I cant find his parents or link him to siblings.

Any information would be appreciated

I have letterhead from fenton m sanger on a letter to daughter hattie in 1887. He mentions fire in Muscogee 27th of March. My grandmother (lena sanger) was turing 6 on 14 of april and her sister may 8 on the 7th of may according to the letter. I found the letter in my mothers things after she passed away in 1986. Sanger ranch letterhead was impressive. Sanger's Ranch on chitto Hatchee Creek, Arkansaw Valley. Wealaka, Indian territory dated April 8, 1887. I can send you a copy if you like.
