LIPSCOMB-Mary Adele Sargent Lipscomb, died on August 12, 2007 at the Carver Living Center in Durham in Durham County, North Carolina. She was 83 years old. Mary was born on December 29, 1923 in Monrovia in Los Angeles County. Mary grew up in Monrovia, California. She was baptized and confirmed at the Catholic church that her family attended. There were so many Mary's in her First Grade class that she created a nickname for herself, "Marydell", which family members and friends called her for the rest of her life. After she graduated from Monrovia High School on June 18, 1942, Mary worked as a Lab Assistant in the Chemistry Department at California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California. Mary met "Bill" William N. Lipscomb, Jr., who was a graduate student at the Chemistry Department. Mary and William were married on May 20, 1944 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Monrovia, California. Mary, William, and their children Dorothy and James moved to Saint Paul, Minnesota in 1946 when William became an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. In 1959 they moved to Belmont, Massachusetts when William secured a post at Harvard University in the Chemistry Department. William was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1976. Mary and William's marriage ended in divorce on August 14, 1983. Mary lived in Belmont, Massachusetts from 1959 until 1999, at which time she moved to Durham North Carolina to be near her daughter. Mary enjoyed creating several forms of art: painting, silk screening, block printing stationary, and making centerpieces. She was an accomplished seamstress, making dresses for herself and for her daughter, Dorothy. Mary was beloved by her family members for her bubbly charm, caring nature, animated stories, and her devotion to her family. After the divorce, Mary volunteered at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary for many years every Friday. An outgoing person, an enthusiastic conversationalist, and an avid reader of the newspaper, she could strike up a conversation on most any topic. The nurses directed her to their most sad and lonely patients, whom no one else could cheer up. Mary's parents and siblings predeceased her. Her parents are the late Herbert Huson Sargent and Ruth Mary McElhatton Sargent of Los Angeles, California. Her two brothers are the late Adelbert Sargent and the late Herbert Sargent of Los Angeles. Mary is survived by her daughter, Dorothy, her son, James, grandchildren, Elsa, Andrew, and Thomas, and two great grandchildren, Asher and Luuk. Mary's first-born child was an unnamed son who died a few hours after birth and is buried in Los Angeles, California. A memorial service will be held 2:30 p.m. on September 29th at the Community Church Unitarian Universalist, Chapel Hill, NC. Mary will be buried in Los Angeles, CA. In lieu of flowers, Mary's family requests that donations in her memory be made to Duke Home Care and Hospice in Durham, NC, at http://dhcc.dukehealth.org/
