Dear Mary Ann Thank you so much for your response. I just happened to see an election sign for a person named Sartain when I was in Raleigh over the weekend and it started my thinking about this name. I have basically gotten nowhere with Sartin on this site. My parents are no longer living. My mother's father John Sartin died when she was in her late teens. She was an only child. So this is such a puzzle. Thank you so much for your help. Anne Wagg

The mailing messed up how I was trying to show how my mother pronounced Sartain: it was "SART-en". Hope this is clearer. Mary Anne Price

Hi, Ann, I don't have specific information on your ancestors, but did want to comment on the surname Sartin/Sartain. My earliest identified ancestor with the surname is Jacob Sartin, my g-g-g-grandfather, who died in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, in 1862. He may have been born in Culpeper County, VA, in 1770. His son, my g-g-grandfather, was William Turner Sartain, born probably in Spartanburg, SC, in 1801, died 1879 in Providence, Walker Co., Alabama. The name changed spelling between that father and son, but my mother pronounced the last name of William's daughter, her grandmother Mary Ann Sartain, as SART-in, with the emphasis on the first syllable, not as Sar-TANE, as some Sartain researchers do. That may have been a regional pronounciation. Also, since spelling of names was not standardized, any more than spelling of other words, during that time period, you will see the name spelled different ways, often in the same document. (And spelling by census takers was no better!) So I check multiple message boards for several of my lines. Mary Anne Price

John P Sartin or Sartain

My Grandfather was John P. Sartin born in 1888 in Alamance County NC and died in 1924 in Guilford County NC. His father and my great-grandfather was William H. Sartin b.4 Dec. 1852 and died 16 June 1922.- he was married to Sarah W. Terrell. My great-grandfather's parents listed on his death certificate are John Sartin b. 1830 and Mary Winstead b. 1832. Any information on the great-great's would be so appreciated. I imagine the name was changed somewhere along the way from Sartain to Sartin. Thank you for help. Anne Sartin P. Wagg

Hi,
Isaac Sartain was in the Pittsylvania County, VA tax list of 1767 as well as James Sartain. The other names listed are Jacob, Joel and Jonah.

In a letter written to Lyman Draper, a grandson of John Bailey writes that Ann Bradley Bailey married a man named Sartain after the death of her first husband, George Bailey. The Bailey family was from Lancaster/Northumberland Counties, VA. John and Peter James, sons of Ann and George then appear in Pittsylvania County, VA. John is listed with Thomas Hardy JR. in the 1767 Pittsylvania tax lists. I then find him with an Isaac Sartain in KY.

Do you have any information on where the Sartain family was before Pittsylvania County, VA.
Thanks,
Donna

Here are the notes and the research that I have done myself on Humphrey Brumfield:

Les Peine
Canton,Ohio

Notes for HUMPHREY BRUMFIELD:
16 Jul 1833 applied for Rev. War Pension at Gallia Co., OH, having enlisted 1 Apr 1776 in Montgomery Co. VA [have translated copy of application] Legatee of father

Humphrey Brumfield, Revolutionary War soldier, stated in his pension record of 1833 that he lived on the line between Lawrence and Gallia Counties and that he was born 22 June 1752, in Amelia County, Virginia. He was probably the father of James, John, Sartain and perhaps others. Humphrey Brumfield died about 1849, and on 28 June 1970, the Daughters of the American Revolution held a dedication of a government marker that took place in the Brumfield Cemetery near Lecta, Mason Township, Lawrence County. (Found in Lawrence County Heritage Book)
"Humphrey was born in Amelia County Virginia in 1752. He lived several places before settling down in Giles County, Virginia, near the mouth of Big Stoney Creek on New River. Humphrey was a veteran of the Revolutionary War and fought at Kings Mountain. He located in Lawrence County, Ohio near Greasy Ridge in 1816. His wife Sarah Sartin, daughter of Joel Sartin Sr. was a resident of Giles County." (by Robert L. White)
Humphrey was wounded in his breast from a musket shot. He fought in the Revolutionary War at Point Pleasant. He settled on the New River about the mouth of Big Stoney Creek in 1776, on what is known at the David J. L. Snidow place where Hatfield erected a fort.
Humphrey Brumfield
Humphrey was a private in the Virginia Militia. Humphrey enlisted Mar or
Apr 1776 in Montgomery County, Virginia for six months and was placed
under Capt. John Lucas and Archd to the lead mines where he was transferred to the command of Capt. Edwards and Ens. Robert Albert. The company marched to the Moravian Towns in North Carolina (This is around old Salem in
Winston-Salem, NC. Jim Bailey)where he was discharged after his six months. About a year later he was drafted for six months under Capt. John Lucas. He was wounded near Yaken in North Carolina. (Yadkin River in Yadkin County, just west of Winston-Salem. Jim Bailey). In 1780 he was again drafted in Pittsylvania County, Virginia and put under Capt. Conway. He was in the Battle of Kings Mountain under Col. Campbell. He then guarded the frontier for six months. He served two years in all. He applied for a pension 28 Nov 1833 in Gallia County, Ohio.
Humphrey was born 22 June 1752 in Amelia County, Virginia, and at about age 10 he moved to Pittsylvania, then to Montgomery County till about
1816 when he moved to Gallia County, Ohio. He was an early settler in Guyan Township, Gallia County. He was in Lawrence County, Ohio in 1834. Humphrey died in 1849 and is buried in the Brumfield Cemetery, Mason Township,
Lawrence County, Ohio.
There is no mention of a wife but it should be noted that Joel Sartain, also a Revolutionary Soldier, reported that he served with Humphrey Brumfield and that he also lived in Pittsylvania and Montgomery Counties. Furthermore, Joel Sartain Sr.'s heirs included Sarah Brumfield, wife of Humphrey Brumfield, so it is entirely possible that his wife was Sarah Sartain, sister of Joel, Jr. who lived in Gallia County. This information comes from Land Transfers, Giles County, Virginia 6 Aug 1809.
Sources:
1, Pension File at National Archives #S8105 VA
2. Certificate #26302 issued 3 May 1834
3. Hardesty's "History of Gallia Co." 1882, p.XX
Jim Bailey Notes:
1. If Humphrey was wounded in Yadkin County, NC, he must have been
wounded after the Battle of Kings Mountain (7 Oct 1780 in S.C.). The only
recorded battles in Yadkin County were in 1780 & 1781, both at the
Shallow Ford near Huntsville, NC. The first was on 14 Oct 1780 when Col. Gideon Wright and 300 NC Loyalists tried to cross the Yadkin River and were repulsed by 160 NC & VA Patriots. The second was on 8 Feb 1781 when Lord Cornwallis crossed the Yadkin and encountered stiff resistance from a party
commanded by Joseph Graham. There were many skirmishes in the area in
that same time frame and Humphrey may have been wounded in one of these.
2.If Humphrey served on the frontier for six months after the Battle of Kings Mountain, he may have fought at the Battle at Cowpens, SC on 17 Jan 1781 and/or the Battle of Guilford Courthouse (modern Greensboro,NC) on 15 Mar 1781.
Regards,
Jim Bailey
Kinston, NC
(Transcription of the letter of application for a Revolutionary War Pension, found at the National Archives in Washington DC, on September 28, 1999 by Rev. Leslie A.
Actually my email is now catlady1412@sbcglobal.net. I have a family line of Sartains from the Springfield, MO, area and would love to hear from anyone there. This line originates with Lewis Sartain, as far back as any of us could get with documentation so far, and is in Webster County with the Jasper/Jessie/Hiram Sartain line but no direct connection has been verified yet. I can't imagine they are not related, however. Webster County is still lightly populated! I believe one of our William Sartains did go to Idaho.

I am researching the Smith's of Yalobusha Co., MS. Your Emeline Smith Sartain was the daughter of Amos and Rutha Smith. I am sure you know this by now; but I would love to exchange information with you about the Smiths. Could you give me birth and death dates for Emeline and Carter?

I hope we can be of help to each other. Thanks so much.
Wanda
gen@sonet.net

Sartain - Alden bad dates

Throughout Ancestry.com, Thomas Sartain (b 1706) is shown as having Mary Alden (b 1837) as a spouse. Of course, this is absurd, but many people have the connection posted. Mary Alden is a Mayflower descendant of course. Does anybody have a resolution to this? I am a descendant of Sartains through the Harison Sartain line.

http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=jhight... is one link for example.

Karl

SARTAIN FAMILY FROM EAST LONDON APPROC 1870 / 80's

i AM AT A DEAD END NOW, THE INFO I HAVE IS LISTED BELOW BUT i CAN'T GET ANY FURTHER - COULD ANYONE PLEASE SHED SOME LIGHT ON THE MATTER ?????
Elizabeth Caroline Sartain married John William Leeks in 1907 Bethnal Green - had Leeks children, 1 of which is my grandad George Alfred Leeks 1925.

Elizabeth Caroline was the youngest of 3 girls, Alice and Polly.

Apparently Polly married and went onto have about 20 children, Husband name not known but I think her eldest son was Freddie.

Alice had 3 children - the 1st daughter was known as 'Diddies', 2nd child was Rosie White and the 3rd child was Teddy Albany. Before she died, Alice was married to a man named Edward. (presuming it is Teddy Albany's dad, His surname would be Albany too.)

The 3 Sartain girls all came from around Mile End London. I definately know that Polly is buried in Manor Park Cemetary East London. Jackie, also told me that Elizabeth Caroline's mum died when she was only about 2 - 4 years old, apparently taking down the christmas decs ( how sad ! )

Now for the stuff I've managed to collect ...............

Elizabeth Caroline's birth certificate shows born 13th May 1887, 10 James Street, Mile End. Mother - Mary Ann Sartain formerly Bennett, father Nathaniel Sartain. Registered 27/06/1887 at Mile End Old Town, London, Middlesex - (GRO ref 1c 542)
Elizabeth Sartain married John Leeks Dec 1907 Mile End Old Town London, (vol 1c 686)
Elizabeth Leekes (note surname is spelt wrong) died aged 66, 1953/4 Bethnal Green London (vol 5c 170)
(When my grandad George Alfred Leeks married in 1943 - Elizabeth and John Leeks lived at 4, Thoydon Road, Bethnal Green London)

Alice Louisa Sartain birth registered 1885 (1st qtr) Mile End Old Town (vol 1c 583)

Apparently Mary Ann was known as Polly so..................

Mary Ann S Sartain birth registered 1878 (4th qtr) Mile End Old Town, (vol 1c 596)
Mary Ann Sartain married registered 1896 (4th qtr) Bethnal Green to Henry Levett (1c 784)
1901 census shows Henry (b:1897), Rose (b:1899), Mary A (b:1900), listed as their children, the family was living at 28 Anes Street, Bethnal Green London

Also other children that may have been born / died into this family - hence the big gap between mary ann 1878 and alice 1885.

() = what quarter meot = mile end old town

(mummy sartain) Mary Ann Sartain born abt 1862 died 1889 (4th qtr) Mile End Old Town (this would match the christmas death of mummy sartain and also death is a couple of years after Elizabeth.Caroline was born)
As for birth registrations - I have found ;
Mary Ann Caroline Bennett - 1860 (2) Bethnal Green (vol 1c)
Mary Ann Caroline Bennett - 1863 (1) Newington London Surrey (vol 1d)

As for NATHANIEL SARTAIN - I have got nothing at all !!!
Looking for family history

I am interested in finding out about my family history. My name is Jana Sartain, b. 1978 in Amory, MS. I have one brother, Jarred Sartain, b. 1977 in Amory, MS. I grew up in Hamilton, AL. My father was Lester Phillip Sartain, b. 1952 d. 1995 who married Eva (Nixon) Sartain, b. 1953. My grandfather was Leerastus Aaron Sartain, b. 1925 d. 2007. He was known as Aaron and lived in Hamilton, AL and other places in Alabama where he worked as a teacher, principal and finally a Superintendant of Schools in Marion County, AL before retiring. He had brothers by the names of Alvin and Adron and a sister named Cumi Sartain Glick (second marriage, do not know the first). I think my grandfather's father's name was William, but not sure. I once did a genealogy report on the family when I was in the early years of high school, but since it was so long ago, I have no idea where it is and so I don't know much more. I think that I remember something about the family coming from Georgia before settling in Alabama. If anyone knows any of these names and has more information, please let me know. Now that both my father and grandfather are deceased and my brother is the last of our line to carry on our name, I am interested in the history of the family. Thanks for any help.

I am looking for information about the Sartain family. I believe that I am distantly related through marriage to this family but I have little information about them. It is likely that there was an adoption which further clouds the issue. All I know is that the family is from Oklahoma or lived in Oklahoma or someone went to college in Oklahoma or Arizona.

My great great grandfather was John Calvin Atchley
b:11/29/1823, he was married to a Martha Sartin 12/05/1882 at Jones Chapel, Severville Tn. they had three children:
Hattie Mahala Evelyn Atchley, B: 11/19/1883
Oner Boyd Atchley, B:04/13/1886
James Dorty Atchely, B: 09/18/1889

I have a photo of Mahala and James Atchley. Both John Calvin Atchley and Martha Sartin were married before. His fist wife was Elmirah Liles, I believe he married her in 1843. they had eleven children, one of them, John Pinkney Atchley was my great grandfather. I have the names of all eleven children. Some of the Atchley families, perhaps Sartin's as well lived in Oklahoma.

I sincerely hope this will be of help to you.
Hi Auntie! This is Jaime---formerly Julie---(Loyd's daughter). How have you been? I am moving down to Fortuna, CA near Eureka as of June 2007 (next month). I have been living in Oregon for the past 11 years as I basically got stuck up there, but my mother asked me to move in with her to help her with her grandson/adopted son Marty, who has Asberger's. Her 2nd husband, Bill, just died on April 12th, and Mom needs a hand raising the boy, who was born to Valorie in March of 1993.

I would like to know what you know of our family roots, when you have the time. You can reach me by email at Jaimesheart@yahoo.com or Jaimeshart7@aol.com, which is a temporary email until I get settled with Mom. The spelling difference is deliberate, so I can get my permanent email later, so for correspondence purposes, you may want to use the yahoo email.

My husband, Tino & I separated in September, 2005, but we remain friends, and we are going with our daughter Rhonda to Disneyland in August when she comes home on leave from the Navy. She is based in Sicily, near Italy, and has been the "pay guru" for over 1700 people for quite some time now. I'm very proud of her. We plan to come to Stockton on the way back, so we would love to see you then, if possible, and catch up with you and yours.

Our son Ramon is also in the Navy and is coming home from Iraq to be based back at Whidbey Island, WA in a couple of weeks. We're going to go see him when he gets back.

And our youngest son, Anthony, recently went active-duty in the Army and was shipped immediately to Korea for a 3 year stint, so right now, all of our children are overseas and I miss them all very much. The only one threatening to marry is Ramon so far, and I expect a grandchild within the year after they marry--which I do believe will be this year.

My cell-phone number is 541-606-1547, but I will only have that for this month. It doesn't work in CA where I will be living. But my California home number will then be (707) 725-1698.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
