Satter Photographs 1941-1942 Newport OR

I collect and research old photographs as a hobby. I recently bought a set that has written on one “Taken on fourth Birthday June 27-1941 Carmella Satter.” The other photographs appear to be Carmella with her parents, with a grandmother, one of her on Nye Beach, Newport OR July 1-1941.

I have posted scans of two of the photos to DeadFred.com (a site for reuniting lost family photographs).

I'd be happy to share the other photographs is there is interest.

From searching Ancestry and Google, Carmella appears to have had an interesting life. She had at least two children and appears to have married 5 times. I can't verify with certainty.

Carmella J. Satter 27 June 1937 – 23 August 1999 California

m. William Vedder – Long Beach, CA. Son born 18 Sep 1961.
m. Myles A Sills – 14 Feb 1964 Los Angeles, CA. Divorced March 1966
m. Harry C. Lord – 15 Oct 1972 Los Angeles, CA.
m. Herbert Cohen – 27 Jun 1980 Clark County NV.
m. Christophers

Can't believe I could actually find a relative on here. I'm on facebook, and have been looking, only one besides my kids and a few nieces I found was Aunt Betty's son Joseph. Get back to me if you can, if not on here, join facebook.com..Cousin Sue :)

Re: Looking for descendents of John & Sophie Satter

Sophie (Dehut) Satter was my great aunt. She was sister to my grandfather, Edward E. Dehut. Her parents were Norbert and Mary (Dietrich) Dehut. Norbert's father, Pierre Dehut, immigrated from Belgium with his three sons and two daughters in 1856, and settled near Green Bay, Wisconsin. (I haven't been able to learn much about Mary Dietrich.) Norbert married Mary and traveled by covered wagon to Kansas, where they spent their first winter in a dugout. I know my grandfather, and probably Sophie, lived in a sod house for a few years.

When I was a teenager, back in the 1960's, my family traveled to Oregon to visit my father's aunts and uncles. While there, we stayed with one of Sophie's sons, I believe. He and his wife worked in a canning factory, and took us for a tour. They also took us sight seeing in the coastal range, and to the coast, a place called "agate beach". It was the only time I ever met Aunt Sophie and Aunt Adeline. By that time, both John and Dave Satter had passed away. (Sophie and Adeline Dehut were sisters who married brothers, John and Dave Satter.) I'd love to now who it was we stayed with.
My husband and I are planning another trip to Oregon this next summer(2009)to visit his cousin. While there, I would be delighted to meet with anyone who is interested in family history and family stories. I haven't been doing much research lately, but will be glad to share what I have and what I know. I also have several old family photos that belonged to Ed Dehut.

Your great-aunt must be getting a bit elderly by now. Get her to tell her family stories while she still can! If she has any old photos, be sure to have her write the subject's names on the back!

Thanks for your reply.
Cheryl Dehut, Leander, TX

How nice to have found you on line, and my apology for the late response. I have been ill.

I (Altha) recently, also came across your family tree and was happy to find some of the info in it, I needed on Carl's family. My father is Arthur, his brother. Joe was another of Carl's brothers. His daughterinlaw Diane S., and I are working on a family tree for the Satters as a joint effort. Just starting to enter stuff, so I would wait awhile and then you can pick it up after we have corrected the data. I'll notify you when it is closer to being completed.

It is sad that the party that placed this posting, no longer views it. Because I do believe that one of us probably have the answer they are looking for. It did help us to connect though, so that is a good thing. I would dearly love to have a copy of the marriage certificate for the marriage referenced in this posting, but don't have time right now to go after it - with all the other work on this family tree project!

Another one of the Satter's working with us obtained the old country infomation for Christ and Olga. It is not in agreement with the data in your tree. Would like to know your source for the parents of Christ and Olga, and where you obtained the spelling of her maiden name (again not in agreement with the source we are using (Carl's brother John's bc)?

If you were not aware, Christ was married to Martha Olson prior to Olga and had four children with her. Olga also had one daughter in the old country, prior to immigrating and marrying Christ. It makes for a very large family and some interesting stories.

I have two additional questions for you. But, where these are not pertinent to this posting, I'd like to take this off line. My e-mail is althajeansatter@yahoo.com.

You had several posts. I responded to a couple of them, in the hope of making contact. I personally only have one small picture showing the Satter grandparents of your Grandpa John, (Clara's parents). But, your Grandpa John's cousin Dolly,(Olive's daughter), has some that she is sending to me. I met her again at your grandmother's (Grace) funeral for the first time in half a century.

I began assisting Joe's (your Grandpa's uncle-deceased) daughter-in-law, very recently, by requesting information from the living cousins (related thru the 13 full brothers and sisters, and one half-sister, of my father, Arthur, and Clara). She is working on putting together a family history for the Satter's. I was looking for medical history information for myself. Your Grandpa and Julianna have already been contacted for information. When we get it done, I'm sure they will also let you know. In the meantime, how about we switch to regular e-mail? I'm very interested in obtaining wedding pictures of Clara & Annie, that I know existed at one - because I can remember seeing them. Annie is a little frail. But, her daughter, Vicki, and Olive's daughter, Dolly, I am guessing - will be the major contributor's of data that the rest of us don't have. In the mean time let's switch to e-mail, althajeansatter@yahoo.com.

hello and thanks for the response! :)

Yes, I am putting together a family tree. I have been working on it for years, and this is one family line that I still have found nothing on. So your father is Art? My great grandmother was Christ/Olga's daugter Clara Satter (passed 1989 in Colfax) and my grandfather is her son (John Gullickson). Johnston is my married name.

Can you provide any other information on Christ and Olga? Like where in Norway are they from? Does anyone have any pictures of them? I have never seen any pictures. :)

So Anna Satter is still alive? Does she know more about the Satter family?

Thanks for responding to my posting! :)

My grandfather, Christ Satter (1874 – 1961) From Tombstone -Holden Church, N of Colfax, Wis on M.

He was 45 at time of the 1920 census & lists himself as a Laborer at the flour mill, address is South Park Street, Red Wing City. He notes Norway as the place of birth for himself (Immigrated 1892)? and Olga (Immigrated 1906)?; Naturalized 1907?. Carl, Olive, John, Clara, Anna, Albert, and Arthur are listed in the household, with Minnesota as their place of birth. David, Joseph, Robert, Elaine, & Danny later made for 12 children from this marriage. One of these siblings, Anna is still alive.

Wife - Olga had one child before coming to this country, Jenny - later immigrated to Canada. Olga born 23 Nov 1884, died
Oct 1966, in the County of Dunn, and is also buried at Holden.

Christ was previously married, and had four children. Three of which were left for adoption at the Children's Home Society, one a daughter Ruth Satter (Markey)was retrieved and raised with his second family. Are you descended from RALPH JOHNSTON born 06 Aug 1905, and adopted by the JOHNSTON family? Years ago, searched on behalf of my aunt, Ruth Markey, and obtained the adoption records for two of the boys that were adopted, Ralph JOHNSTON and Herman Krouse.

? indicates info is difficult to make out on the census form.
Hello. My sister-in-law e-mailed me your "posted message" re: your grandpa Ed Satter. Ed Satter was my dad's brother. My dad is Julius Satter. Ed and Julius' father and mother are John and Olena Satter. As I understand the history, they settled in Wisconsin (Wheeler) before they moved to Canby, Oregon. I am embarassed to say at this time, I can only think of the following siblings: Chris, Olga, Amanda, Samantha, Benny, Julius, Ole, Ed, Albert. We do have a "herd" of relatives in the Minnesota/Wisconsin area who are the descendants, I think, of a brother or two of John Satter. One of those relatives has done an extensive family tree. We have cousins (first and second) in Portland, Oregon, also. Anyway - "hey! good to hear from you". My husband and I are going to be relocating to Oregon in the very near future. I hope our paths cross. Bye! Theresa

My Mother was adopted at 18 months old by an Edward Satter and wife Catherine Laniok Satter. Edward has been decesed since 1951. Although Catherine is still alive, I would like to find out who my mom's real mother is and if she is still alive. I don't know her name though. So, I figure maybe I would start my search here with you. Does an Edward Satter sound familar to you? Catherine is Ukrainian. She is 91yrs old, and lives in Rochester N.Y. with my mother Diane Satter (Missell).
This is about all the information I have.
Hope something good comes of this.
Please respond.
Thank You!

My Grandfather was Edward Satter. It is my understanding that his fathers name was John but I am not sure about his mothers name. Grandpa was born in June 1895 in either Minnasota or Wisconsin and died in Salem Oregon on October 1, 1972. I am not sure about the number of siblings he had but I do remember his sister named Olga a brother named Julius and also one named Ole do ring a bell to me and I am quite sure that he did have more. My Grandfather told me that his family came from Norway and he spoke some of the language. At this time I do still have 2 Uncles' alive that have more knowledge than I and will contact them. Edward Satter was a newspaper printer for many years and also owned a small "Mom Pop" grocery store in Salem until his retirement. Please contact me if this looks like we have something in common.

Maiden name of both was Durloo. Her father died in Vancover and is buried in Williamette National Cemetery in Portland. Her sister was born in 1920 so it is very possible she is deceased. I have found him in the census records, but would like to be able to trace roots farther back and am hitting a wall. I cannot determine if he changed his name after coming to US. Have found variations of name in US documentation. Any information would be appreciated. I am a newby at this stuff, and find its addicting, but frustrating! :)

Jacob Satter b. about 1831 Germany d. 1871 New Orleans

Hello, I am looking for information about Jacob Satter (alternate spellings possibly Seiter or Suter based on vital records), born around 1831 in Germany. He emigrated to the USA and settled in New Orleans, Louisiana. Some records could indicate that he came from Pfalz County, Bavaria, Germany, but we are not sure. He died in 1871 in New Orleans. He was a shoemaker. He married Anna Maria Friese or Frese or Frazier. They had around 6 children, including my great-great-grandmother Catherine Satter and her brother Jacob Henry Satter. If anyone has more information about the background of Jacob, I would be grateful to know it. Thank you.
