looking lost uncle never got to meet. Born in Switzerland in 1900. Came to USA in 1923. Married my aunt Tena Melland, also never met. Jacob Sauter and Tena were married in 1928 in Wisconsin. She was born May 16 1905 and died Oct. 13 1947 at the age of 42. If I can't come up with info. I have lost the tree on my fathers side. It was just the two of them. Thanks

Hi Bradford -- I used another user name last time I responded, so I don't know if it went through. Thank you so much for your note! I would still LOVE to connect with you. I have quite a few pictures and articles of Aunt Alida -- haven't been doing too much on my family tree stuff, but would love to do more! The website won't let me access your email, so this is the only way for me to contact you. Take care! -- Kari (my email is zimmerwmn@aol.com)

I am replying to your message, now over 5 years old! I am looking for additional information on Johann Jakob Sauter of Onstmettingen who was a watchmaker and balance maker and how he may be related to earlier Sauters (e.g., Paulus Sauter, the deaf watchmaker). I am descended from Catharina Sauter who with her mother and siblings after the untimely death of her father, Conrad Sauter, emigrated from Onstmettingen circa 1746 and married Jacob Keinadt from Onstmettingen in 1757 in Philadelphia (Jacob's father's first wife, Ursula Sauter, was the grandaunt of Paulus Sauter).

Hello. I am looking for information on a relative, John Ruland FRELIGH, who was b.1847 St. Louis, MO and d. 1885, PROBABLY in Calico, CA (but I don't know which "Calico", as there are two towns with this name, one in Kern County and the other in San Bernadino County). He was sometimes went by his middle name of Ruland, other times by John.

In Jan. of 1871, he staked a claim to a piece of land in California with Alexander MILLER and Charles STAPLES. (See below for my transcription of the newspaper article on this. Also, I have a JPG version of this newspaper page that I would be happy to email you, if you like.)

Do you know anything about this Mr. STAPLES or the land they purchased? Do you have any oral or written family history about this at all?

Also, the surnames RULAND and SHIPPEY have shown up in my family's history at this time, in case you have anything on these names.

Thank you in advance for the reply. I certainly appreciate whatever scraps you can throw my way!

Anne [TEXT FOLLOWS]

[Following is a transcript of the newspaper text. Fonts were small and illegible, hence the question marks in some fractions. Note that there is a SECOND land claim by someone named "Staples" already next to this one: "bounded... on the West by..."]

APPLICATION FOR A PATENT TO
A Placer Gold Mining Claim
No.95
_________

United States Land Office                   }
Sacramento, California, January 21st, 1871       }

ALEXANDER MILLER, CHARLES STAPLES, and JOHN FRELIGH, having filed their application in this Office for a patent to a Mining Claim, and the law and instructions in such cases provided having been complied with, it is hereby noted that the [illegible: “annexed”?] notice of such application, be published for ninety days, in the “Mountain Democrat”, a newspaper published nearest the location of said claim in Placerville, El Dorado County, State of California,
JOHN G. I am absolutely sitting here with my jaw on the floor as I am SO excited to hear from you after I posted that 3 years ago and have been beating this brick wall for many years! I would LOVE to chat. I have a great deal of info on the Buech line -- Alida Degeler was my gggrandmother's half sister. Please feel free to email me at zimmerwmn@aol.com. I, unfortunately, do not have any info on the Sauter line, but hopefully we can help each other out on the Buech/Degeler side. I have basically been obsessed with Alida Degeler since I "found" her over 10 years ago.

Thanks so much! Kari

Hi Bradford, jesse mccullar here, my wife Melba Haug's line includes a SAUTER from the Rottenburg am Neckar, Germany area. Christian Sauter born 8/8/1751 married 11/16/1772 Elizabeth Hartman b. 11/17/1747. The "Family Sheets" we copied in 1995 in Rottenburg list the daughter Magdalena who married Johanns Haug 3/22/1810 in Wurmlingen, a suburb of Rottenburg.
jessemc

Hi:
I saw you reference to an Adolph Sauter. I was just wondering whether he was residing in Illinois. My ancestor is mistakenly referenced in the 1850 Census as Adolph rather than the proper name of Eulogius Sauter. Eulogius resided in Chicago as well as Bloom Township south of Chicago. He had 3 sons and five daughters that were brought to America. The sons names were Charles, Jacob and Vincent.
If you think this may connect in any way please respond.

I have been looking for a Texas Sauter and have not found anyone yet with Sauters from Texas. Either we have a lot of Sauter cousins or the name may translate to something like Smith or Jones. As many Sauters as I have seen this may well be the case.

IF anyone has some Texas Sauters would like to hear from you. My Sauters are from Bandera & Gillespie Counties, the San Sabe River Area & San Antonio. The earliest Sauter I know is Tobias akc. Tobie Sauter who had a lot of children one was my ggrandmother, Agnes Sauter.

I was told a family story about the Texas Sauters. Mrs Sauter was a small woman, but generous she shared sugar and biscuits with the indians. During an indian uprising, Mr sauter was out in the fields when the indians came by, Mrs Sauter hid with her children. The indians spared the home where others had been burned to the ground. Late in the evening Mrs Sauter's brother-in-law came to check on his brother and his family with others from San Antonio area . They found Mr Sauter dead in the field and they took Mrs. Sauter and kids back to town.
IF this story sound familiar to anyone please contact me as were are probably related. .

Hope someone is able to connect with my Sauters.
Carolyn

My Anton Sauter was born in 1866, the son of Frank and Mary Sauter. The family came to America from Alsace in 1882 and settled in Buffalo, NY around 1888. Anton (whose American name was "Anthony F. Sauter") married Barbara (nee Fritsch) in 1888; they had 7 children:

Charles L.
Eugene G.
Joseph L.
George J.
Anthony F., Jr.
Edward C.
Barbara

Most of them lived out their lives in the Buffalo area. To the best of my knowledge, there is no immediate relationship between this family and your Wisconsin Sauters.
Thanks for you reply.
I am doing the research for the daughter of Matthew Jerry Sauter as she is completely disabled. Matthe Jerry and his "wife"??? Helen LaVerne Smith abandoned my friend and she was raised by her maternal grandparents so she had only bits and pieces of information to work with.I found in my research for her Matthew Jerry born 14 May 1921 place unknown as yet died Aug 1987 Steger,Cook,Illinois.(SSDeath Index. She knew that his father was Matthew Eugene Sauter and I found him in the 1920 census in Michigan which jibes with the family story about him. I found he was born 17 June 1895 in Michigan and died 27 Nov 1961 Santa Clara,California. He was married to Mary Susan Smith who I am wondering may have been a relative of Helen Laverne Smith was born in Mountainair,Torrance,New Mexico and I found her in a census there and got a good start on that line.It is the Sauter line I have struck a brick wall on as I find several Matthew's on different websites but we cannot prove which one is right except for the one's that have the same information we have. Any clues you might have would be appreciated.

Hi Kari,

Glad I could help.
I have a SAUTER line (Weilheim, Wuerttemberg to Greenfield, MA) so I moniter the Sauter Forum from time to time. You provided excellent information, and I lucked out finding the death notice in two minutes in a newspaper database I subscribe to.
Happy hunting!

Shari
