The name could have been originally "Sauerkohl", which is the same as the food "Sauerkraut". It would be of German origin.

Hi,

There was a William H Savacool in NJ he died in the Civil War. Not long ago I also saw info on him via net. His middle name was Hampton if I remember correctly.

I did a lot of "Local" research, and I know he had children, and I think his wife remarried. I forget who she married. William (OBVIOUSLY) had children. At this time, if my memory is correct, Willian's Father was Henry. In Henry's Will he left money to William's Children. Henry is in Stillwater Cem, at New Harmony Church (If I remember correct the Church Name) I believe Henry was Married Twice. In his Will he also left quite a few Farms to ech of his children.

A CRACKED WHEEL.

THE COOLNESS OF AN ENGINEER ON THE READING RAILROAD.

Avoiding an Accident by Presence of Mind.
Special Despatch* to THE PRESS.

POTTSTOWN [PA], January 24 [prob 1881].-- As the express train on the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad, leaving Broad Street depot at 4 o’clock this evening, was nearing Mill Creed Station, Engineer Savacool heard the wheels of the engine crack. He quickly reversed the locomotive, put on the breakes* and jumped on the top of the boiler, calling to the fireman to do the same. Scarcely had he done so before a large piece of the driver crashed through the board on which he had but a moment before been standing; his coolness saved a serious disaster to the train for a few minutes of rapid running would have resulted in breaking the entire rim of the wheel. After a delay of an hour the engine of the Pottstown gravel train was brought into service and pulled the train to Reading.

* spelling left as shown in article

SAVACOOL
Nancy (Willoughby) (Hamler) Savacool/Savercol/Savercool of Sussex Co., NJ

I am looking for a Nancy (Willoughby) (Hamler) Savacool/Savercol/Savacool who grew up in Sussex Co., NJ though she was born in North Carolina.

My main line is "Hamler" (often mispelled "Homler") and my Savacool/Savercol/Savacol is Nancy Roxanne (Willoughby)(Hamler) Savacool/Savercol/Savacol . Although she grew up in Sussex County, New Jersey, she was born in the South in 1860-- in North Carolina-- where her mother Mary Jane was married to her father Washington Willoughby. Washington Willoughby was in the Southern Army and he deserted both the military and his wife and child. Abner Hamler was on his way home to New Jersey after fighting for the North in the South. He stopped on his way home in North Carolina and within weeks had married Mary Jane; bringing her and her daughter with him home to Sussex County, New Jersey. In the 1870 Census, Abner was listed as Head of household with Nancy Roxanne *Hamler* (formerly Willoughby) listed as his daughter and Mary Jane (Willoughby) Hamler as his wife. Mary Jane died that year and Abner would marry Mary E. Mabee who recovered Abner's Pension in 1885 after Abner died.

In 1922 Nancy is listed in her half-brother's (David Hamler of Sussex Co., NJ) obituary as "Nancy Savacol," presumably having married.

My problem is that I cannot find hide, nor hair of "Nancy Savacool/Savercol/Savacol " in any Census, from 1900 to 1930! If anyone has any information or ideas, I would deeply appreciate it!

Most gratefully,
Kathleen Hamler Purchase
LPurch6636@aol.com

Hi Tammy. Harry E. Savacool was my great-grandfather. He was born Oct. 1, 1870 (I think in Inidana). His father was Charles, who was a furniture maker in indiana. Harry's mother was named Carrie.

Harry E. (Edward?) Savacool became a draftsman and matied Etta Sale of Bethel, Ohio. They had four children Ted E., b. april 1891; Charles E., b. April 1895; and Mildred N. b. July 1892, and Otis Elmer, b. Oct. 6, 1900. Otis was my Grandfather.

It appears that your grandmother and my grandfather were sister and brother.

I have lots more family history and links to the Savacool side if you are interested. Feel free to contact me.

Jamie Pickrell

Savacool, Henry

I am interested in wife and children information about Henry Savacool, born in PA in the early 1840's to Francis Savacool. The family moved to Lucas County, Iowa about 1854. I am aware that the family continued to live in Lucas County at least into the late 1800. Henry had several siblings, some of which I have good information about. I have an original deed to Francis Savacool for property in the Chariton Cemetery dated in 1872. I will be very willing to share with anyone who is interested in this same family. I think I even have pictures.
Thanks.
