Hi, I am seeking information that would link Lemira Balch's husband, Elijah Sawyer, to my great-grandfather Francis Sawyer who was born circa 1836 in Ontario, Canada, possibly near the Moose Creek area in Ontario. I believe Elijah may have been a brother of my Francis. Can you give me any confident information on the two?

Many thanks,
Marilyn B. Echols

In my notes, I have Knud's father as Ole Johnson Strandasto
and his mother as Martha Thoresdt Bjorheim. Both were born in Norway. I also have Knud's brother as Otis Sawyer, born in Norway in 1827. He also married a Martha (unknown) and had six children. I will have to do some more research to find the origins of my notes and I will pass them on to you.
I hope this helps
Rebecca Coats was my grandmother and she lived with my family the last 8 years of her life. I have some old letters and receipts written by Hannah Holcombe to Sophronia (cir. 1884). I have pictures of most of my grandmother's half-brothers and her full sibilings as well as Sophronia herself. I will look in my family files and see exactly what else I have on the Sawyer line. I would like more info on the Holcombe family. Thank you

mmills1972@yahoo.com

Margaret, what a great photo! Unfortunately I do not recall receiving the photo you posted from Shirley. We got side-tracked with the bible which was a great reource and resulted in my locating the whole Ford line in my Ancestry Public Tree. http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/12965319/family (just posted last weekend!) I still have not located Rowland Bird's family.

My Dad passed in 2004 so cannot identify the pictures. Do you have the 1950 reunion photo? I could send you that. If you could send me a high resolution of the 1900 picture you attached to the email, I can blow it up and compare it to the 1950 pic.

I am aware of your books. We have corresponded in the past. I have previously asked if you had included the Currituck Co., NC, Sawyer's in your books and at that time you told me no.

Simeon is a grandson of Jacob and Sarah Sawyer of Currituck Co., NC. Jessee Sawyer who migrated first to Marshall Co., IL and later died probably in Oregon was an uncle of the Simeon who married Julia Dowdy.

Jean

Simeon Sawyer was born between 1812 - 1814 in Currituck Co., NC and died between 1860 - 1870, probably in Norfolk,
VA. He was the son of Simeon and Dorcas (LNU) Sawyer. Simeon and Dorcas (my 3rd great grandparents) had four known sons:
Willoughby b. bef 1805
Caleb T. b. ca. 1805 (my ancestor)
Wilson b. bet. 1809 - 1814
Simeon b. bet. 1812 - 1814 married Julia Dowdy. They had 10 known children.

Julia Dowdy was born in 1823 in Currituck Co., NC, the daughter of Samuel and Julia Parker Dowdy. (They are my 3rd great grandparents). Julia Dowdy Sawyer died after 1880, probably in Norfolk, VA. Samuel and Julia Parker Dowdy had five known children. I descend from their daughter Margaret (older sister of Julia who married Simeon Sawyer).

Simeon and Julia had 10 known children:

Andora b. 1842 (F)
Caleb b. 1844 (M)
Mary b. 1846 (F)
Sangulia b. 1847 (F)
Daniel L. b. 1848 (M)
Marcelina b. 1849 (F)
Julia b. 1850 (F)
Thomas G.

What a lovely surprise! So you are Henry Hollington Sawyer's cousin's grand-daughter. They called him Pater apparently. I am Henry Cecil Sawyer's grand-daughter, his son Michael, my father is living in Lincolnshire. I certainly think that Henry Cecil and Alexander Vivian were born in India. Will check with my father. I would be very interested to see a copy of Pater and Gertrude Isabel's marriage certificate - I couldn't find anything on Find My Past website. I think Gertrude Isabel's maiden name was Clerk/Clark and she married a Major Grace before marrying Pater. My grandfather and his brothers had an older step brother called Charles Grace. We have some photos of them all. My email address is deborahsawyer2@yahoo.co.uk - might be easier to swap information. We have a large family out there - Canada/Australia/UK

Really lovely to hear from you - will let you know any more news. Have a very sketchy family tree somewhere.

Knud O Sawyer Norway/Minnesota/Illinois

I'm trying to find out more about my gr-gr-gr grandfather, Knud O Sawyer. He was born in Norway in approximately 1821. I don't know what year he immigrated to America, though his wife, Ann J Peterson, arrived in approximately 1852 (not sure if they were married at the time or not; she was born in Norway in approximately 1833). I know of his children, and a bit about his mother, as she lived with him in the 1880 census. Her name was Martha, and she was born in approximately 1793 in Norway. I know he lived in Fillmore County, MN in the 1857 census (and his first two children were born there). I can't find them in the 1860 census, but they are in the Victor, DeKalb, IL census from 1880 on. He died in Victor on January 10, 1894. I'm trying to find out more about when he immigrated, and more about his parents and siblings. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

John F. Sawyer - May 1836

I am looking for any information on John F. Sawyer, born May 1836 and his family. He married a daughter of Dr. Anson Sams. Her name is shown several ways... in the 1850 census as Cissaline and in Dr. Sams' will as Cisaline. She has also been referred to as Deborra Caroline. She was born in 1837.

Both John and his wife were still living in 1892, the date of Dr. Sams' will, as they are both mentioned.

I believe* that the entry for John Sawyer in the 1900 census of Marshall, Madison County, NC is this John Sawyer. In it he states that he was born in Tennessee, as was his wife, which is possible as several of the Sams children of this line were born in Tennessee. John is widowed and is shown living with his son that appears to be Samuel, although this could be incorrect since the census is written over the son's name.

There is also a J.F. Sawyer listed under Building and Contracting in Marshall, NC on page 442 of Branson's NC Business Directory 1890 Volumn VII.

Any assistance or leads on this family would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Dawn

Hello Deborah, my grandmother Minnie Sawyer(b.1891 Hoxton) was first cousin to Henry Hollington Sawyer, she married Ernest Charles Vicarey in 1913. In my research for the Sawyer and Vicarey families I could not find the birth records for the 3 sons of H H Sawyer and Gertrude. Were they born in India? I have learnt that Henry was in Bombay and served in a Karachi Auxiliary regiment in WW1. Also I cannot clear up a little mystery about Gertrude Isabel's maiden name. Was she Clark or Grace?. I have a marriage certificate for Henry and Gertrude at St Clement Danes August 1908 and she is entered as surname Grace and father as Francis Bingley Clark (deceased). Could be a clerical error. Can you help with this? Many thanks June Lawrence Ipswich Suffolk England
